Posted - 11/08/2004 : 14:14:39 Tom Petty. Genius.
Any other fans?
Just been listening to Runnin' Down a Dream - fantastic. His stuff reminds me of 'nothern holidays to Wales, where my dad would always put on a Tom Petty tape in the car - songs like Free Fallin', I Won't Back Down & Into The Great Wide Open.
If you can't appreciate Tom Petty then there's something wrong.

Posted - 11/10/2004 : 17:20:48 You know, Carolyanna, I forgot that there were a few gems later on. Dont Come is a brilliant song. I saw some VH1 thing once where he said that he thought that they had really gotten it right on that one - that it was "what a pop song was supposed to be". Certainly a good song. Into The Great Wide Open is of course great as well. I stand corrected. It took a while for him to get to the "my old man was born to rock. he's still tryin to beat the clock." period that I alluded to earlier.
So, since this popped up, I've had all kinds of stuff in my head....ELO stuff mainly. I found that somehow, there's a seven CD set out there with no lees than 14 albums/compliations on it. Man. That would just about cover it for me. Plenty O' ELO ear candy for years to come. Truthfully, I think maybe The Diary of Horace Wimp is about my fav of all...so far.
I am thinking of buying this right now, tho: http://www.ftmusic.com/shop_ultimatecd.html
CD1 Hold on Tight | Rock 'n' Roll is King | Calling America | I'm Alive | Confusion | Last Train to London | Do Ya | Showdown | The Way Life's Meant To Be | Turn to Stone | Here Is The News | Evil Woman | Can't Get It Out Of My Head (7" Edit) | Shine A Little Love | Strange Magic | Twilight | Wild West Hero | Nightrider (7" Edit) | Xanadu
CD2 Don't Bring Me Down | Livin' Thing | All Over The World | Mr. Blue Sky | Sweet Talkin' Woman | Don't Walk Away | 10538 Overture (7" Edit) | Secret Messages (Special version from the LP) | Ticket To The Moon | Telephone Line | Ma Ma Ma Belle (7" Edit) | Rockaria! | Getting To The Point | Across The Border (EP version) | Roll Over Beethoven (7" Edit) | So Serious | Illusions In G Major | The Diary Of Horace Wimp | Four Little Diamonds
Yes. Want.

Posted - 11/10/2004 : 14:17:43 OK kath... Telephone Line
(Electric light Orchestra)
Hello, how are you? Have you been alright, through all these lonely nights? That's what I'd say, I'd tell you everything..... If you'd pick up that telephone.
Hey, how you feeling? Are you still the same? Don't you realize the things we did, Were all for real, not a dream? I just can't believe they've all faded out of view. I look into the sky, and I wonder why......
Telephone line, give me some time, I'm living in twilight......... Telephone line, give me some time, I'm living in twilight.........
Okay, so no one's answering, Well, can't you just let it ring a little longer? I'll just sit tight, through shadows of the night. Let it ring for ever more.
Telephone line, give me some time, I'm living in twilight......... Telephone line, give me some time, I'm living in twilight.........

Gotta go get "Afternoon Delight" out of my head. Thanks a fucking bunch, KOK! Maybe I'll play the song "Moonlight Feels Right." a couple of times. Get that in my head instead.
Moonlight.....feels right.

Posted - 11/09/2004 : 23:41:53 Tom Petty deserves some respect, for sure. I always liked "Muskrat Love". That song always brings back the memories.
"I Love a Rainy Night" was pretty good.
"Afternoon Delight" used to kind of weird me out though.

Posted - 11/09/2004 : 15:03:02 Petty prior to his collab with Jeff Lynne - who I think was an absolute genius prior to 1981 - was very good. ELO was amazing for the most part. Most of it anyway. ELO, Alan Parsons, Kitaro...that whole period was pretty strange. I was little , but I remember. Petty just kicked ass and took names back then...and you cold not fuck with the Heartbreakers...probably one of the best folk-rock bands ever...second to The Band maybe.
Full Moon Fever was the beginning of the slide into 'old stoned dude' writing style for Petty i think. I really don't like slow, stupid songs about being stoned. I liked him better when he was a pissed off street kid...not an old, fat dopehead with too many cool guitars. Wilburys were good, but bored me a bit. Made me want to call up all the rhythm guitar players I knew and sit around with them and play all the same chords and sing the same notes at the same time.
The only thing I don't like about the Beatles is Oasis. |

For your sake, I hope you are kidding.
No, no, no. Seriously, you should check him out. Especially his earlier stuff.
And the video for Last Dance With MaryJane was cool. All that goth night-time stuff when he takes the dead body down to the water. Kim Bassinger's body, to be exact. Very EAPoe.

No we can't. Tre has made an ill-advised stand and she's going to be beaten down until she admits that The Beatles are responsible for all that is good in rock music.
Back on topic: I like Tom Petty but only in a casual way. I have and enjoy his live CD from many years ago.
Back off topic: the only stands Tre makes are ill-advised ones. That said, The Beatles are so *not* responsible for all that is good in rock music. Some that is good, I'll grant you, but not all. All?

Posted - 11/08/2004 : 17:06:09 I'm a fan. I'm finally getting into Wildflowers after all the years. One thing that made me appreciate him was playing his songs on acoustic guitar. Most of the songs are simple enough that you can just pick up and play. Plus my voice is right in his range. |
