Posted - 11/08/2004 : 12:26:29 i'm usually really good about not getting parking tickets these days, because i've gotten so many in the past and i'm jaded. i ALWAYS put money in the meter. even if i'm just running in somewhere for 30 seconds. because i've learned that lesson..
but i got a parking ticket over the weekend that takes the cake. $47. can you fucking believe that? that's how much parking tickets are in Santa Monica nowadays. they've always been the WORST, but now they've outdone themselves.
the only thing stopping me from going and vandalizing the parking headquarters at City Hall is that i'd probably get another fucking parking ticket.
fuck.

Posted - 05/11/2009 : 03:53:32 You're just pissed I never gave you one of those "get out of jail free" cards. Maybe you should ask someone local for one. I'm not sure an NYPD DEA card would work in your neck of the woods.

Posted - 05/10/2009 : 17:15:54 i got my second parking ticket in the last 3 years last thursday. i blame the resurrection of this thread...i wish i could take it back. funny thing is, i made an honest mistake. i knew the lot i was parking in was for instructors, but i thought visitors could park by the hour and i was just dropping off a paper, i ran to the tim horton's to get change and when i went to the pay station, it wouldn't let me put in for an hour, so i went back to move the car and i had a ticket! FUCK! $47.10 down the drain if i pay it in a week, $57.10 if i wait. funny thing is it quotes contract law and trespass law on the back of a ticket and in common law if one of the parties makes a mistake, the contract is void. i think it would end up costing more to fight, so i'm not going to bother.........
this is the 3rd time i've hit 3500 posts (i think)

Posted - 05/10/2009 : 04:55:51 ha...that is perfect. I had a parking cop give me a ticket WHEN I HAD MONEY IN THE METER!.. We came walking up and he was still nearby, and I went up to him to argue and he said "you probably just put money in the meter" and I was like no you are just a dumbshit who fu***d up his own simple job.
I had to go to a mediation kind of thing and they dismissed it.

What people mostly get are $115 summonses for No Standing, No Stopping, No Parking, Double Parking, etc. Most expensive is $180 for No parking in a handicapped zone. Least expensive $35/$65 Parking Meter fines, that's $65 for Manhattan below 96th street the rest of the Boroughs and upper Manhattan pay $35. This is one of the reasons I moved from Brooklyn to Long Island. Not because I was getting summonses. When I worked in Coney Island it took me 10 to 15 minutes to get home from work and another 45 minutes or more to find legal parking so I wouldn’t have to wake up early the next morning to move my car for alternate side of the street parking so Sanitation could ‘clean the streets’.
The sign above shows only one side of the street. There is another sign on the other side of the street that says, ‘No Parking – 9:30 to 11am - Tue and Fri’. Hence the term ‘alternate side’. This is one of the city’s biggest money makers. Let’s say you worked late and overslept or just plain forgot to look at the sign the night before. WHAM!!! $45/$65 summons. You learn fast to note the times and days of those alternate side signs.
I haven't worried about those signs in years. I love my driveway.

Posted - 11/08/2004 : 18:05:03 Last weekend I went down to Miami Beach to visit friends and we ended up eating at a little deli downtown. We came out to find that our meter had expired and there was a ticket on my windshield. I picked it up, muttering obscenities all the way, and was shocked to see that it was actually a warning. The damn thing looked like a greeting card, they even thanked me for patronizing local businesses and told me to have a nice day at the end. I used to live in Miami, and I know the city loves nothing more than sucking large amounts of cash right out of my wallet, so this was truly shocking. The last one I got there was $57.

Posted - 11/08/2004 : 17:18:00 I got a $200 parking ticket for parking in a bus zone (for less than 5 minutes). I was already unlocking the car heading out of the bus zone when the cop came. It should also be noted that no buses came to the stop while I was parked there, so no one was inconvenienced by me parking there. The cop was, however, double parked in the middle of a two lane (both directions) street, really screwing up traffic in both directions just to stop and give me a ticket. This was in Oakland, it was the morning my band went to record our demo, it was right in front of the studio. The ticket cost more than the demo.

Posted - 11/08/2004 : 14:39:13 Last weekend I went into the city and parked my car overnight at the train station. Unfortunately, my inspection was a couple of months past due. The fine I recieved from a ticket written at 2:43 in the morning was........wait for it........ $90.00! Add on the $35 bucks for the inspection and the entire ordeal ran me 125 bones. My own damned fault, too, for letting the inspection lapse.

I know! I know! That's why I won't whinge! And $8 still sucks. I gotta go downtown and find parking outside City Hall (where I usually get another ticket because I NEVER have change for the meter), and then I gotta stand in line... alright, we suck. That is cheap. [/whinge] |

Posted - 11/08/2004 : 14:27:55 sometimes the parking rules can be confusing around here. especially in santa monica. i'm always very careful, but this time i wasn't careful enough. one of the signs said "2 hr parking 8am to 6pm".. which usually means that you can park after 6pm no problem.
but then there was another smaller sign (i kid you not) that said "no parking 3am to 11pm" or something..
it's fucking bullshit.
it's just funny because i was going to park in valet, but didn't want to pay 3 bucks

Parking tickets here a lovely 10 bones. If you pay within 2 weeks. If not, it goes up to $40 (Cdn). They're still a bitch, though. But I'll not whinge too much. |

I got a ticket at the weekend in Tottenham, North London: £40 for parking on a yellow line on a Saturday - thats about $60-70. My flatmate got one for £115 in town the other day - that works out to about $170 ish.
So quit whinging.

We aren't allowed to park on the streets here from 2 a.m. to 7 a.m. There is a company called AutoPark that goes around and distributes $8 tickets to cars parked on the streets at this time. One night, I was hanging with some friends on a porch and there was an AutoPark car sitting in the street while the driver sat inside, writing tickets. A college-aged kid came riding by on a bike, hocked a loogy onto the windshield as he rode by and screamed, "You're an asshole!" and kept on riding.
