went to check out the news back home, and saw this.
good choice i say.
i ran into quite a few Yanks back home who had left the US because of Bush - dare say it's only going to get worse (or better depending on how you look at it).

Inquiries from Americans wanting to move to New Zealand have "exploded" since George W Bush was re-elected president.

The Immigration Service's website had 10,300 hits from the United States the day after the election. Usually it gets 2500 hits a day.

And the phones of its US marketing directors in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Portland, Oregon, have been ringing nonstop since the election.

Marketing director Don Badman said there had been up to 300 telephone calls and emails a day.

"We've been doing this for 11 months and it's been building up to about six to eight calls a day, but from Thursday it's exploded. It really started picking up from 11pm the night of the election."

The San Francisco Chronicle reported that many Americans were inquiring about moving to New Zealand, Australia and Canada as a result of the election.

A Canadian website is reaching out to help weary liberal Americans, asking Canadians to marry someone from south of the border.

"Open your heart and your home. Marry an American. Legions of Canadians have already pledged to sacrifice their singlehood to save our southern neighbours from four more years of cowboy conservatism," jokes the site,

set up by a Toronto humour magazine.

To convince Americans to come on up, the site mentions that Canada is a liberal utopia with universal health care and, in some provinces, gay marriage.

"We envision a movement where everyone wins: Freedom of expression and a politically convenient marriage with love and igloos for all."

I apologize for the ignorance, but how does your taxing structure work in NZ, wanderinghands?

In most instances here we not only pay Federal and State income tax, but also: property, sales, use, gas, capital gains, city/municipal, county, and schools.

When we lived in Illinois (Chicago) the sales tax was 8.75%

In Delaware County, Ohio, it recently went up to 7.25%. since our Republican Governor Taft raised the State sales tax.

Can't really answer that questions, Wandering. There isn't just one tax for one thing or one tax bracket. Then the taxes vary from item (property tax vs. clothing vs. food) and from state to state. (And this is the least of our problems here in America.)

"Americans moving to NZ will find out what high taxation really is."

What is it in the US? Back home (NZ) it is 39c per dollar

The cookie factory down the road has burnt down and now the whole street smells like food. You wanna go smell?

A former co-worker swore she'd move to NZ if Reagan got re-elected. He was, she did and says she's happy all these years later.

Can I come too?

I have a nagging feeling that they wouldn't let me in, though. I have a friend who did emigrate to NZ two years ago, and let me tell you, it was not easy.

Well had you heard the news
About Joan our ex-newspaper girl?
They found her swinging from a tree
And I know
Just a week ago, she was beautiful
But now now now she's rather vile
