I dunno Ebb - i think things are relative...sure, things can be 'good', regardless, but they also can be groundbreaking, and totally exceed expectations and other elements of the time...

It's definitely overused tho!

Weezer haven't been all that great since Matt Sharp left. I think he contributed more to their sound and energy than you'd think considering he was bass and backing vocals. Can you imagine Say It Ain't So without the falsetto on the verses? He brought a sense of fun to the first couple albums that has been lacking since his departure.

Berry left after New Adventures in Hifi.
Perhaps it was the age I was and I wasn´t familiar with Murmur or whathaveyou, but I really dug Monster as a 14-15yearold in 1994.

heh, it's nice that you want to believe that but the songs are quite good.

if it weren't for the effects pedal abuse you'd lap it up.
KimStanleyRobinson Posted - 10/27/2004 : 15:55:14
Monster is a piece of shit - sorry.

Oh, and I agree with Apl - everything after Rattle&Hum was moot...maybe a tune or two mattered over about 10 years time.

I did see them in 2001 though. I had never seen them, so I figured I should before I die.
Ebb Vicious Posted - 10/27/2004 : 15:32:07

berry left after monster, monster isn't a perfect album but the songs are quite good for the most part.
apl4eris Posted - 10/27/2004 : 15:17:11
I never followed R.E.M. closely, but always liked their older albums. Monster is where it went downhill for me - is that when Berry left?
Ebb Vicious Posted - 10/27/2004 : 15:03:18

well i think it's obvious once they hit it big they didn't care about the music anymore, and it has become almost an afterthought in their lives.

i think the same happened to R.E.M. after bill berry left.
apl4eris Posted - 10/27/2004 : 14:57:56
U2 have been invisible to me after "Rattle and Hum", and the small bits they did for Wim Wenders' movies.

They've sucked for longer than they haven't, IMHO. Lots of good music to take their place, so that's ok by me.
Domestiques Posted - 10/27/2004 : 14:21:29
barney out of new order referred to him as bongo many years ago in an interview, and in our house, well its stuck. pretty much like referring to tony blair as cunt has stuck. Only difference is me nan calls bono, bongo and tony blair, tony blair.

Me neither. Slick and smug and pompous.

i like achtung and zooropa but i don't like Pop. very boring uninteresting songs.

edit:

also, i don't believe in qualifiers such as "for its time" or "considering the situation", etc.

something is either good or it isn't good.
someguycalledjames Posted - 10/26/2004 : 17:50:39
i liked Pop though i listened to it all the time at one time, i would like to see them live but i seem to have this aversion to stadiums/ arenas etc
Llamadance Posted - 10/26/2004 : 17:23:45
Pop admittedly is a bit pish, but I can't think of another U2 album that I don't like. Achtung Baby and The Unforgetttable Fire are probably the stand-outs, but the rest are great too. In fact, I thought that ATYCLB was their best for a while.

And what Broken Face said.

Yep i'll go with that, Zoo tv was exciting at the time - 'One' was just amazing. i think though that they are losing their edge a bit...no pun intended

The only commercial that I see more than the U2 Ipod commercial is that Girls Gone Wild with the guy from the Man Show. Both commercials make me feel icky, inside and out. Does Bono say a single real word besides for "Hello" in the commercial?

Wow, I just thought of a great video. Bono hosting girls gone wild. "Show me your mammaries. Oh, starving children in Africa could feed off those for months."

I can't stand those IPod commercials with U2. Thank you, Bono, but I can live without seeing ALL THE WAY DOWN YOUR THROAT (as he sings into the camera) because...ew.

Otherwise, I don't have a lot of opinions about them.

i'm not the biggest U2 fan in the world, but i wouldn't say that bono is a douchebag. even if he is eating lobster dinners, he does more than most celebrities do to try and make the world a better place. and he got bill o'reily to shut up - isn't that good for something?

Yeah "Pop" sucks, but "ATYCLB" sucks more because they were trying to reclaim their former glory. I can't stand watching Bono plead for Africa when I just paid $85 for a nosebleed ticket and I know he's using it on lobster dinners backstage.

How much of that IPod money is going to Africa, Bono?

I have the common sense not to subject myself to any of the tirgid shite this group stick out.

The first 3 U2 albums were pretty damn good. War was a great album, but after that I dunno it kind of did get a bit tedious.

my joke was that the latter album was even worse, apparently nobody got it, though.

Interesting, I'm vice versa. I liked Pop (the New Order fan in me?) but thought All You Can't Leave Behind was tedious, flat studio drum sound. Wonder how the new one will be, though in the last 5 years my U2 worship has declined considerably.
