My brother loves that movie, he even owns all the Sid Vicious t-shirts and all. When I first saw the box I thought Nancy was played by Joe Pesci in drag. Though in retrospect that compares favorably to Courtney Love. Never really was a fan of the movie. The local 1960s theater that still hasn't been renovated recently reran the original Tron. Nothing like that in the theater! As for pure beauty of filmography, Lawerence of Arabia is untouchable.

Oooh, Darwin! How right you are. And talk about a soundtrack!
(I mentioned R+R Hi School because I'd just seen it moments before
posting.)

I own it!

what ever happened to Pray For Rain anyways? ;)

I always liked the original Suburbia with the little triangle acid hit's and that great DI song 'richard hung himself', i think that movie inspired my first and only crime spree, i was drunk with a buddy and we stole like 10 steaks from 3 different garage freezers around the neighbourhood, good times, good times.

How about two words: Spinal Tap

EDIT: Officially it's 4 words: This is Spinal Tap

ok i'm sorry i exaggerated to illustrate a point that her performance was not that impressive because it was largely one note.

obviously i have a personality disorder.

Um, actually, people with a personality disorder don't know that they have a personality disorder. So you're somewhat sane, I'm afraid.

I think a soundtrack can be a reason to like a film. When pressed to provide reasons to like Boogie Nights, for example, such a list of mine always contains the line item, "Great Soundtrack." So it's not so crazy a reason.

Sid & Nancy is engaging because it's the story of two young kids who really were undeserving of the situation they found themselves in. I won't comment on the accuracy of the film, because I don't know it. But despite their undeserving status, and amid such a unique and flamboyant setting as the flurry of a punk rock band (and arguably one of the biggest things to happen to rock & roll), these two kids fell in love.

By the end, they'd destroyed the band and they destroyed themselves with drugs. But they always had each other. The film presents Nancy's death as tragic yet sympathetic; like demented euthanasia (good name for a band, if anyone's interested). Sid's death in the film is beautiful and haunting: the reuniting of two lovers, joined by death.

This opnion reminds me of a girl I used to know. She could never relay an accurate account of any situation she had exprienced while others were around. Made us all question anything she talked about really. Any time she'd talk about whatever it was that had happened, she played so much of her own personality back with it, she would actually *change* events. She'd argue with other people who were actually there and experienced the same thing - all saying "Thats just NOT what happened..." but to her, it was reality and she'd never change her story cause she thought she was the center of the universe and that all things cool, punk, hip, whatever, came from her and went outwards.

"That's okay, Nancy. People are gonna be into my stuff around 85, 86 ok, so BE COOL."

There's a term for that in psychology. Of course right now I can't remember which personality disorder that is, but it's a real condition.

the soundtrack was good but that's not reason to like a movie, imho.

how was the movie engaging? i thought it was incredibly bland.

cvanepps Posted - 10/22/2004 : 10:13:10
Good flick. Alex Cox isn't for everyone that's for sure, but he took a biographical account and turned it into an engaging film, in my opinion. And I can understand John Lydon not liking the film because it's not about him (I'm Lydon's biggest fan so I feel I can comment on his narcissism with some authority).

Anyway, back to S&N. The thing that I really liked about the flick was the soundtrack. The Pogues, John Cale, Joe Strummer. Great stuff, baby.

Xander Berkeley delivers yet another amazing supporting role. And what the hell happened to Chloe Webb anyway? She was so great as Nancy.

The best thing about this movie is that you get to see Courtney Love's VERY. FIRST. NOSE. I think I watched it five times before I realized it was her. Huge.

You don't understand my post.

What I dug was the movie - how sick and fucked up IT was.

Frankly I don't know why I mentioned my age...guess I was just saying that I was at least alive while all this shit was going on...and they did tour the US...and Nancy did die at the Chelsea in NYC...

wow... this is a blast from the past it's been about 16 years or so since i watched it. I remember reading the biography nancy's mom wrote around then too. i carried it around everywhere until i read the whole thing. for awhile it was my favorite book.

No, you'd have to be genuinely stupid to dig it I guess.

I was 8 in 1979.

Again - as art, it might be shit, but I dug how sick and fucked up some of it was.

Makes me want to go find a copy of "The Gift"- the Jane's thing .

What it really makes me want to do is start my own unreasonably loud, bad punk band and fall off the stage screaming some kind of incoherent violent garbage.

Ebb Vicious Posted - 10/22/2004 : 00:15:02

lol well i can't even make myself feel stupid enough to enjoy S&N.

just fucking boring movie with underdeveloped boring characters and boring dialogue and nothing interesting happening.
KimStanleyRobinson Posted - 10/22/2004 : 00:11:28
I have little reverence for words..this shows. *great* gets slopped on all kinds of shit..depends on how I feel about it at the time. Tonight, Sid & Nancy is a *great* movie.

AF was a good movie. Loved the acid trip segment.
S&N wasn't a rock movie, I don't think. Its a fictional window into a life we all wanted to know more about. Why not play a bit? You have to - who the fuck knows what really went down?

Ray manzerek talks down the Doors movie, but I don't give a shit cause he's cheese.
I want to believe Nico went down on Jim in an elevator and that Pam saw it...why not?

Ehh, I'm stupid and I like it...like a carnival ride. ;-)

well it's ok to be wrong sometimes. :)

'almost famous' is a better rock movie, imho, but still not a *great* movie.

The drug use doesn't fuck with me cause I don't know it personally - and I hope to never know it, but the punk 'ethos' or whatever is something close to my soul and it is well spoken in S&N.

Love, death and music - what more is there?

Platoon for me = Barber's Adagio For Strings . Fucking amazing piece. I was a bit crestfallen when I learned what the original inspiration for it was, but it is still amazing.

Only time I ever watched 2 movies a day was late college...beer and movies all the f-ing time.
Now?
Ask me anything about Spongebob Squarepants or the Teletubbies and I'm on it.

sid & nancy is awful. terrible shitty movie.

and i don't say that because the heroin use revolts me or something.

i just think it's boring, and poorly written and poorly directed.

IIRC, john lydon has disavowed that movie as well.
LBF1976 Posted - 10/21/2004 : 23:20:13
No.

No.

And No.

I used to watch 2 movies a day.

Heroin useage, I think it's disgusting.

I like Platoon, I usually stop it hlaf-way through, when Willam Defoe dies.

And NBK, I ususally stop it when they get bitten by snakes, but I do like the ending a lot.

What about Caddyshack?

I'm just talking in general about movies I've watched religiously.

I don't mind violence and gore, but nasty drug use I think is disgusting.

I like war movies, sorry.

Living in Oblivioun is my favorite movie, but I lost it. Man, that really makes me angry, anyway.

Wait, S&N is yucky, but NBK and Platoon you can watch all the TIME?
Dude.

I mean, DUDE.

No really, though - get a copy.

Have you or anyone else seen the Pogues movie?
I think it is rather Shane-specific, but hey...its still the fucking Pogues.

I was thinking about watching the Royal Tennenbaums again... I don't know, that movie is a mood movie... well, aren't they all?

I don't think I have a copy of Sid and Nancy.

I can watch some movies all the time: Platoon, Natural Born Killers, Boondock Saints...

I need to expand my horizons; maybe Internets could help me out with that goal.

I haven't watched it in like 8 years... That's one of those movies you watch every now and then, I cannot imagine watching it daily or weekly or montly at all... it's kinda yukcy to me....
