On average, rich people look better than poor people. It certainly has to do with healthcare and the way they are dressed etc, but I think that the main reason is natural selection.

I think ugly men have it easier than ugly women because it doesn't matter what men look like. A man's confidence and strength of presence go further than his looks in terms of how both sexes will typically react to him.
Most hetero men don't put much thought into what other men look like and most women aren't as visually stimulated as men are. Most women can be aroused by a good-looking man, but not feel desire (wheras in most men, arousal and desire are virtually the same thing).
Meanwhile, a woman's attractiveness is not only subject to judgment from men (and most men will typically ignore women they don't find attractive), but also subject to judgment from other women. And women notice tiny details (especially about each other) that men hardly ever notice.
There was an interesting thing that happened at work recently. A girl had a pimple and she covered it by painting a tiny brown spot -- a convincing fake mole, just a tiny spot -- over it. Most of the other women noticed the fake mole very quickly. Some noticed it within seconds. They noticed it without her even mentioning it. But there wasn't a single man there who saw the mole until he was told about it. It almost became a game, seeing how quickly the women noticed and how the men never noticed at all. |

The rich are unfortunately at this shallow point in time deciding what media images will be currently "beautiful", if you fall for what a bloodless reptilian corporate clone tells you is modern classic beauty you are admitting to your own of lack of dimension. Hype only gets you so far. The rich are different from you and I, for one they can't park a car. |

I think some people are willing to overlook ugliness when money is involved.
While my actual answer to the title is "They aren't," I think there's a certain degree of truth in a lot of what was said. The generalization is still dumb, though. I find that I largely agree with Cassandra.

money didn't make Jagger beautiful, he's still ugly but we're made to believe he is attractive because of the glossy pictures the standard aesthetic wife(s) and the rock and roll life style, the media dictates what's beautiful nowadays, a million and ten eating disorders are testimony to that.
I've never been big on aesthetics, my list of past crushes reads like a who's who of seriously great but not typically beautiful looking people, and the nice guys aren't often the rich ones (hence Bill Gates - the dog. I'm guessing to some that amount of wedge makes him attractive, to some sickos mind)

There was a time tan and skiny girls where considered ugly. tan meant working outside (and not rich enough to afford holydays in the sun), skiny meant poor (and not rich enough to buy dietetic and healthy food). What do you mean? That rich people make believe they are beautiful? What does that mean, "believe"? Finding something beautiful is already subjective, how can you add more "subjectiveness" to that? If there is a pattern that rich people created that we think is beauty, but it's not, then what is true beauty? Are there two different levels of beauty? Like, what I believe is beauty, then what really is beautiful. And how can you know what is truly beautiful?
If you mean that my subjectiveness tends to associate two distinct things, wealth and beauty, because each of them is desirable, then explain how I am able to see that people like Bill Gates or the prince of Wales are obviously unattractive.

I think it has to do with a lot of things- time to put into your looks vs. worrying about getting by day to day, diet, access to and time for exercise, stress level, etc. True, many of the "leisure class" look well-rested and happy, can afford good dental care, nice clothes, can take vacations, etc. But beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder. |

Well, it's all a matter of opinion anyway, but yeah, I'd say rich people are more likely to conform to typical societal standards of beauty because of the reasons other people have suggested. Poor people not being able to afford nice clothes might also be a factor. I've never done a study on this, though, and can't say for sure if it's true, at least in my own opinion. Really, I'm inclined to believe it isn't true.
