OK - this time around, you can post no more than one lyric, but feel free to analyse and pick to pieces other peoples' choices.

Here's my one, which seems quite appropriate to me at the moment.

"How Soon Is Now"

I am the son and the heir,
Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar.
I am the son and heir of nothing in particular.

You shut your mouth, how can you say
I go about things the wrong way?
I am human, and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does.

There's a club if you'd like to go,
You could meet someone who really loves you.
So you go and you stand on your own,
And you leave on your own,
And you go home, and you cry and you want to die.

When you say it's going to happen 'now' -
Well, when exactly do you mean?
See, I've already waited too long,
And all my hope is gone.

You shut your mouth, how can you say
I go about things the wrong way?
I am human and I need to be loved,
Just like everybody else.

"You ever seen a man say goodbye to a shoe?"
"Yes, once..."

Rémi, that is definitely a beautiful song, and I really love Mercury Rev. I saw them on a special concert at Le Réservoir (for a TV show called Music Planet tonight)and their live performance is very good too.

This is real poetry. The language of the poetry should be essential, not commercial like the everyday language.

The subject of the song is not very original (see Song to the siren), neither is the way it is treated. Yet some images are very strong, and very characteristic of Mercury Rev (like the ship). The "s" sound is frequently repeated, giving it a special fluidity (like a snake).

Mercury Rev - You're My Queen (I absolutly love this song)

Siren with a song in your eye
Slashing through my ear like a beast
Seven times I leapt upon your shore
Every night I let you conquer me
Serpent with your blue planet eyes
Passing like a ship through my sleep
Seven times I kissed you on the mouth
Every night I let You conquer me
You're my Queen, You're my Queen

So you have no point of reference, Donny.
You're like a child that wanders INTO THE MIDDLE OF A MOVIE!

I listened to that album yesterday!! nice Carol Banana

They will see us waving from such great
Heights, 'come down now,' they'll say
But everything looks perfect from far away,
'come down now,' but we'll stay...

I thought this would be funny but I really like the lyrics.
Its been stuck in my head for days now.

And it's true we named our children
after towns that we've never been to.
And it's true that the clouds just hung around
like black Cadillacs outside a funeral.

And we were done, done, done
with all the fuck, fuck, fuckin' around.
You were so true to yourself.
You were true to no one else.
Well I should put you in the ground.

I've got the time, I got the hours,
I got the days, I got the weeks.
I could say to myself
I've got the words but I can't speak.
Well I was done, done, done
with all the circ, circ, circlin' round.

I didn't die and I ain't complainin'.
I ain't blamin' you.
I didn't know that the words you said to me
meant more to me than they ever could you?
I didn't lie and I ain't sayin'
I told the whole truth.
I didn't know that this game we were playin'
even had a set of rules.

We named our children after towns
that we've never been to.
And it's true that the clouds just hunger around
like black Cadillacs outside a funeral.
And we were laughing at the stars
while our feet clung tight to the ground.
So pleased with ourselves
for using so many verbs and nouns.

But we were all still just dumb, dumb, dumber
than the dirt, dirt, dirt on the ground.
Well wings on flames, kings with no names,
well this place just ain't got right air right now.
You were so all over town but still so Crayola brown.
Well you should run 'round yourself right now.
And we were done, done, done
with all the fuck, fuck, fuckin' around.
Circlin' round.

The Postal Service - This place is a prison

This place is a prison
And this people aren't your friends
Inhaling thrills through $20 bills
And the tumblers are drained and then flooded again
And again

Ther're guards at the on ramps armed to the teeth
And you may case the grounds from the cascades to puget sound,
But you are not permitted to leave

I know there's a big world out there like the one i saw on the screen
In my living room late last night,
It was almost too bright to see
And i know that it's not a party if it happens every night
Pretending there's glamour and candelabra
When you're drinking by candlelight

What does it take to get a drink in this place?

What does it take, how long must i wait?

And what the hell have I learned?

Dans le port d'Amsterdam
Y a des marins qui chantent
Les rêves qui les hantent
Au large d'Amsterdam
Dans le port d'Amsterdam
Y a des marins qui dorment
Comme des oriflammes
Le long des berges mornes
Dans le port d'Amsterdam
Y a des marins qui meurent
Pleins de bières et de drames
Aux premières lueurs
Dans le port d'Amsterdam
Y a des marins qui naissent
Dans le chaleur épaisse
Des langueurs Océanes

Dans le port d'Amsterdam
Y a des marins qui mangent
Sur des nappes trop blanches
Des poissons ruisselants
Ils vous montrent des dents
A croquer la fortune
A décroisser la lune
A bouffer des haubans
Et ça sent la morue
Jusque dans l'coeur des frites
Que leurs grosses mains invitent
A revenir en plus
Puis se lèvent en riant
Dans un bruit de tempête
Referment leurs braguettes
Et sortent en rotant

Dans le port d'Amsterdam
Y a des marins qui dansent
En se frottant la panse
Sur la panse des femmes
Et ils tournent et ils dansent
Comme des soleils crachés
Dans le son déchiré
D'un accordéon rance
Ils se tordent le cou
Pour mieux s'entendre rire
Jusqu'à ce que tout à coup
L'accordéon expire
Alors, d'un geste grave
Alors le regard fier
Ramènent l'or batave
Jusqu'en pleine lumière

Dans le port d'Amsterdam
Y a des marins qui boivent
Et qui boivent et reboivent
Et qui reboivent encore
Ils boivent à la santé
Des putains d'Amsterdam
De Hambourg ou d'ailleurs
Enfin, ils boivent aux dames
Qui leur donnent leurs jolis corps
Qui leur donnent leurs vertus
Pour une pièce en or
Et quand ils ont bien bu
Se penche le nez au ciel
Se mouchent dans les étoiles
Et ils pissent comme je pleure
Sur les femmes infidèles

Dans le port d'Amsterdam
Dans le port d'Amsterdam

and:

So familiar and overwhelmingly warm
This one, this form I hold now.
Embracing you, this reality here,
This one, this form I hold now, so
Wide eyed and hopeful.
Wide eyed and hopefully wild.

We barely remember what came before this precious moment,
Choosing to be here right now. Hold on, stay inside...
This body holding me, reminding me that I am not alone in
This body makes me feel eternal. All this pain is an illusion.

We barely remember who or what came before this precious moment,
We are Choosing to be here right now. Hold on, stay inside...
This holy reality, this holy experience. Choosing to be here in...

This body. This body holding me. Be my reminder here that I am not alone in
This body, this body holding me, feeling eternal all this pain is an illusion.

Alive

This holy reality, in this holy experience. Choosing to be here in...

This body. This body holding me. Be my reminder here that I am not alone in
This body, this body holding me, feeling eternal all this pain is an illusion...
Of what it means to be alive

Swirling round with this familiar parable.
Spinning, weaving round each new experience.
Recognize this as a holy gift and celebrate this
chance to be alive and breathing
chance to be alive and breathing.

This body holding me reminds me of my own mortality.
Embrace this moment. Remember. we are eternal.
all this pain is an illusion.

Patti Smith - Kimberly

The wall is high, the black barn,
The babe in my arms in her swaddling clothes
And I know soon that the sky will split
And the planets will shift,
Balls of jade will drop and existence will stop.
Little sister, the sky is falling, I don't mind, I don't mind.
Little sister, the fates are calling on you.

Ah, here I stand again in this old 'lectric whirlwind,
The sea rushes up my knees like flame
And I feel like just some misplaced Joan Of Arc
And the cause is you lookin' up at me.
Oh baby, I remember when you were born,
It was dawn and the storm settled in my belly
And I rolled in the grass and I spit out the gas
And I lit a match and the void went flash
And the sky split and the planets hit,
Balls of jade dropped and existence stopped, stopped, stop, stop.
Little sister, the sky is falling, I don't mind, I don't mind.
Little sister, the fates are calling on you.

I was goin' crazy, so crazy I knew I could break through with you,
So with one hand I rocked you and with one heart I reached for you.
Ah, I knew your youth was for the takin', fire on a mental plane,
So I ran through the fields as the bats with their baby vein faces
Burst from the barn and flames in a violent violet sky,
And I fell on my knees and pressed you against me.
Your soul was like a network of spittle,
Like glass balls movin' in like cold streams of logic,
And I prayed as the lightning attacked
That something will make it go crack, something will make it go crack,
Something will make it go crack, something will make it go crack.

The palm trees fall into the sea,
It doesn't matter much to me
As long as you're safe, Kimberly.
And I can gaze deep
Into your starry eyes, baby, looking deep in your eyes, baby,
Looking deep in your eyes, baby, looking deep in your eyes, baby,
Into your starry eyes, oh.

Oh, in your starry eyes, baby,
Looking deep in your eyes, baby, looking deep in your eyes, baby, oh.

Oh, looking deep in your eyes, baby,
Into your starry eyes, baby, looking deep in your eyes, baby

Dashboard Confessional - The Best Deceptions

I heard about your trip
I heard about your souveniors
I heard about the cool breeze and the cool nights
And the cool guys that you spent them with
I guess I should have heard of them from you
I guess I should have heard of them from you
Well don't you see, don't you see
That the charade is over
And all the best deceptions and the
Clever cover story awards go to you
So kiss me hard
'Cause this will be the last time that I let you
You will be back someday
And this awkward kiss that tells of other people's lips
Will be of service to giving you away
I heard about your regrets
I heard that you were feeling sorry
I heard from someone that you wish you could
Set things right between us
Well, I guess I should have heard of that from you
I guess I should have heard of that from you
Well don't you see, don't you see
That the charade is over
And all the best deceptions and the
Clever cover story awards go to you
So kiss me hard
'Cause this will be the last time that I let you
You will be back someday
And this awkward kiss that screams of other people's lips
Will be of service to giving you away
To giving you away
I'm waiting for blood to flow to my fingers
I'll be alright when my hands get warm
Ignoring the phone--I'd rather say nothing
I'd rather you never heard my voice
You're calling too late, too late to be gracious
You do not warrant long goodbyes
You're calling too late
You're calling too late
You're calling too late

God forbid I exude confidence and enjoy sex

Would all future posters please list Band Name and song title with their lyrics - so i can download ones that seem pretty good! - especially ColdHeartofStone quite impressed with those song(s) listed!
Here's my fave acclaimed but undersold Aussie band You Am I - If We Can't Get it Together

To get up the bond for an inner west flat
He'd work for anybody if he wasn't working for her dad.
She' practicing saying I do or I will
'cause she don't know how to tell him that she's going off the pill.
Her curtains are for certain that he'll talk about her ass
But she clings to his photo like a piece of broken glass.
We can't get it together today.
She's looking for his heart while he stares the other way.
He's dad is a nut, he's ex-girl is a slut.
But he'll be yours forever if you just get it together.
If we can't get it together, if we can't get it together
Is it ever gonna be just you and me?

So they met on Tuesday at the town hall steps
To get an eight by ten photo and a wedding date set.
We might as well do it next week
'cause we've met everybody that we're ever gonna meet.

He's dad is a nut, he's ex-girl is a slut
But he'll be yours forever if you just get it together.
If we can't get it together, if we can't get it together
Is it ever gonna be just you and me?

I like your twisted point of view Mike
I like your questioning eyebrows
You've made it pretty clear what you like
It's only fair to tell you now
that I leave early in the morning
and I won't be back till next year
I see that kiss me pucker forming
but maybe you should plug it with a beer

cause Papa was a rodeo
Mama was a rock n roll band
I could play guitar and rope a steer
before I learned to stand
Home was anywhere with diesel gas
Love was a trucker's hand
Never stuck around long enough
for a one night stand
Before you kiss me you should know
Papa was a rodeo

The light reflecting off the mirror ball
looks like a thousand swirling eyes
They make me think I shouldn't be
here at all
You know, every minute someone dies
What are we doing in this dive bar
How can you live in a place like this
Why don't you just get into my car
and I'll take you away

I'll take that kiss now, but.....

And now it's 55 years later
We've had the romance of the century
After all these years wrestling gators
I still feel like crying
when I think of what you said to me.....

What a coincidence, your
Papa was a rodeo too

Coldheartofstone Posted - 10/07/2004 : 09:31:07
Well I got a bad liver and a broken heart,
Yeah, I drunk me a river since you tore me apart
And I don't have a drinking problem, 'cept when I can't get a drink
And I wish you'd a-known her, we were quite a pair,
She was sharp as a razor and soft as a prayer
So welcome to the continuing saga,
She was my better half, and I was just a dog
And so here am I slumped, I've been chipped and I've been chumped on my stool
So buy this fool some spirits and libations, it's these railroad station bars
And all these conductors and the porters, and I'm all out of quarters
And this epitaph is the aftermath, yeah I choose my path, hey, come on, Kath,
He's a lawyer, he ain't the one for ya
No, the moon ain't romantic, it's intimidating as hell,
And some guy's trying to sell me a watch
And so I'll meet you at the bottom of a bottle of bargain Scotch
I got me a bottle and a dream, it's so maudlin it seems,
You can name your poison, go on ahead and make some noise
I ain't sentimental, this ain't a purchase, it's a rental, and it's purgatory,
And hey, what's your story, well I don't even care
'Cause I got my own double-cross to bear

And I'll see your Red Label, and I'll raise you one more,
And you can pour me a cab, I just can't drink no more,
'Cause it don't douse the flames that are started by dames,
It ain't like asbestos
It don't do nothing but rest us assured,
And substantiate the rumors that you've heard.

And what the hell have I learned?

This one instantly brings back a really nice time period in my life.

I said ’mama, he’s crazy and he scares me
But I want him by my side
Though he’s wild and he’s bad
And sometimes just plain mad
I need him to keep me satisfied’

I said ’papa, don’t cry cause it’s alright
And I see you in some of his ways
Though he might not give me the life that you wanted
I’ll love him the rest of my days’

Misguided angel hangin’ over me
Heart like a gabriel, pure and white as ivory
Soul like a lucifer, black and cold like a piece of lead
Misguided angel, love you ’til I’m dead

I said ’brother, you speak to me of passion
You said never to settle for nothing less
Well, it’s in the way he walks,
It’s in the way he talks
His smile, his anger and his kisses’

I said ’sister, don’t you understand?
He’s all I ever wanted in a man
I’m tired of sittin’ around the t.v. every night
Hoping I’m finding a mr. right’

Misguided angel hangin’ over me
Heart like a gabriel, pure and white as ivory
Soul like a lucifer
Black and cold like a piece of lead
Misguided angel, love you ’til I’m dead

He says ’baby, don’t listen to what they say
There comes a time when you have to break away’
He says ’baby there are things we all cling to all our life
It’s time to let them go and become my wife’

Misguided angel hangin’ over me
Heart like a gabriel, pure and white as ivory
Soul like a lucifer
Black and cold like a piece of lead
Misguided angel, love you ’til I’m dead

You're the night, Lilah. A little girl lost in the woods.
You're a folk tale, the unexplainable

You're a bedtime story. The one that keeps the curtains closed.
I hope you're waiting for me cause I can make it on my own.
I can make it on my own.

It's too dark to see the landmarks. I don't want your good luck charms.
I hope you're waiting for me across your carpet of stars.
You're the night, Lilah. You're everything that we can't see.
Lilah, you're the possibility.

You're the bedtime story. The one that keeps the curtains closed.
And I hope you're waiting for me cause I can make it on my own.
I can make it on my own.

Unknown the unlit world of old. You're the sounds I never heard before.
Off the map where the wild things grow. Another world outside my door.
Here I stand I'm all alone. Drive me down the pitch black road.
Lilah you're my only home and I can't make it on my own.

You're a bedtime story. The one that keeps the curtains closed.
And I hope you're waiting for me cause I can make it on my own.
I can make it on my own.

You're the paint can falling off the wall at the door that slams at the end of the hall where the kid rings sounds of basketball. The battle of the earth of the angels. The shifting snow drifts so realistic, so realistic - call you carpet of stars. See there is something in the yard. It's awful dark. With the painted strings, the cross, the good luck charm, the prayer, the extra layer. The group ???...

And what the hell have I learned?

I wasn't telling you off, don't worry. Its just that certain people overran the last thread with whole albums worth of Rival Schools songs (naming no names ), so I thought maybe we'd be a bit more specific this time round.

I don't actually know David Watts, only know of it, so its quite nice to be able to look at these words outside of the context of the music.

this is a horrible thread, I'm going to get my coffee spark up a cigarette and trawl through and find the other lyrics thread and post some happy nonsense lyrics.

(as an aside though, I went through a stage of not being able to listen to 'how soon is now' because it did that horrible heart-pull thing to me, you know that nasty dull ache in the chest thing. "I am human and I need to be loved" is such a desperate and honest plea, if it fails to affect anyone then they are frankly not human)

I look like the kind of guy who pimps his sister not just for the money, but because he hates her

Trouble
Oh trouble set me free
I have seen your face
And it's too much too much for me

Trouble
Oh trouble can't you see
You're eating my heart away
And there's nothing much left of me

I've drunk your wine
You have made your world mine
So won't you be fair
So won't you be fair

I don't want no more of you
So won't you be kind to me
Just let me go where
I'll have to go there

Trouble
Oh trouble move away
I have seen your face
and it's too much for me today

Trouble
Oh trouble can't you see
You have made me a wreck
Now won't you leave me in my misery

I've seen your eyes
and I can see death's disguise
Hangin' on me
Hangin' on me

I'm beat, I'm torn
Shattered and tossed and worn
Too shocking to see
Too shocking to see

Trouble
Oh trouble move from me
I have paid my debt
Now won't you leave me in my misery

Trouble
Oh trouble please be kind
I don't want no fight
And I haven't got a lot of time

I think he's a genius asa well as Brian Wilson

here's antoher one that I like:

Sylvilla looked into her mirror
Percilla looked into the washing machine
And the drudgery of being wed
She was so jealous of her sister
And her liberty, and her smart young friends
She was so jealous of her sister
Sylvilla looked into the wardrobe
Percilla looked into the frying pan
And the bacon and eggs
And the breakfast is served
She was so jealous of her sister
And her way of life, and her luxury flat
She was so jealous of her sister
She threw away her dirty dishes just to be free again
Her women's weekly magazines just to be free again
And put the children in the nursery just to be free again
Percilla saw her little children
And then decided she was better off
Than the wayward lass that her sister had been
No longer jealous of her sister
So she ran 'round the house with her curlers on
No longer jealous of her sister

I love Ray Davies.

There are a few songs of his that still hit me just right.

Take a bite of the chocolate coffin.

Fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa
Fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa
I am a dull and simple lad
Can not tell water from champagne
And I have never met the queen
And I wish I could have all that he has got
I wish I could be like David Watts
Fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa
Fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa
And when I lie on my pillow at night
I dream I could fight like David Watts
Lead the school team to victory
And take my exams and pass the lot
(Wish I could be)
Wish I could be like David Watts
(Wish I could be)
Wish I could be like David Watts
(Wish I could be)
Conduct my life like David Watts
(Wish I could be)
I wish I could be like David Watts
Fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa
Fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa
He is the head boy at the school
He is the captain of the team
He is so gay and fancy free
And I wish all his money belonged to me
I wish I could be like David Watts
Fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa
Fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa
And all the girls in the neighborhood
Try to go out with David Watts
They try their best but can't succeed
For he is of pure and noble breed
Wish I could be like
Wish I could be like
Wish I could be like
Fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa
Fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa

pas de bras pas de chocolat

Had a Jane's morning.

Oh baby,
I'm so tired
The man...from the government
The man from the tax board
The man from the public school
The man owns the golden rule, yeah
I'm everybody's slave
I made you my slave
You said
This I do for you
If I would help
To give the world back
What it gave
Then I would
I would
I would
I would
I would for you
I would for you
You say my eyes
Are crazy eyes
Sometimes they are
And so are you
And if you wonder
What I would do
I would do
Anything
If I could
You know I would
I would
I would
I would for you
I would for you
I would for you
I would for you
I would for you

You had the chance to post a bunch last time round apl. You did pretty well if I remember.

Unfortunately Mr Moz's words don't necessary lose their relevance once you hit your twenties...

I liked those lyrics a lot as well Andy, very poignant. I like these threads, you get to see that behind the fluff there are good songs with proper meanings.
Simon, I liked yours as well, but I think I'll have to read it a few more times to properly appreciate it.

"You ever seen a man say goodbye to a shoe?"
"Yes, once..."

LBF, those lyrics are beautiful. I'm gonna have to get my hands on some Drive-by Truckers songs and hear what they're all about.

And that's one of my favorite Smiths' songs as well, Cheesemeister. Raw angst in a mental swoon - it perfectly describes a mood I was in far too often as a teenager.

We can only post one song, huh? I don't know that I can do it. I've been very indecisive lately.
