Yeah, Duke is good, maybe the better songwriter. But he's a little overrated, like Ella.

Chevalier is a good choice. What about Charles Trenet? Is he 30's? Or Rudy Vallee?

Ahhhhh <running around, pulling out hair> Overrated?? Maybe a better songwriter? Maybe the best modern composer!!

PS My daughter is named after Ella.

So you have no point of reference, Donny.

No, she isn't a band, but in the 30's she was singing in a band, so it's a valid answer.

Benny Goodman's band, for goodness' sake. Goodman + Krupa + Hampton. No contest. And christ, Sing sing sing with a swing? You can't beat that. Though Basie's band was good too.

Billie Holiday is god. Don't think she's a band though.

Yeah, I suppose I'll have to go with Leadbelly, even though I only have a 10 song compilation of his (that I burned no less), and I only listen to it every so often... still that's about as often as I listen to music from the 30s.

Inna zany combination of Wayne's Pet Youngin'!

Billie Holiday? She's the only one I can remember.

Duke, honorable mention to Pops.

As a guitarist, I'm going either for Robert Johnson or Django Reinhardt if I'm allowed solo chaps. If not, I'll happily plump for Duke Ellington/

Duke Ellington and his band

http://www.pbs.org/jazz/time/time_depression.htm
In March of 1939, Duke Ellington and his orchestra set sail for Europe for an extended concert tour. Even he could not have foreseen the sort of impact it would have. In the United States, Ellington was often overshadowed by more commercial bands, but in Europe, he reigned supreme.

Thousands turned out in Brussels, Antwerp, The Hague, Utrecht, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, and Stockholm, where fans filled Ellington's hotel room with flowers for his 40th birthday. A Paris critic proclaimed that Ellington's music revealed "the very secret of the cosmos" and the French poet Blaise Cendrars pronounced his music "not only a new art form but a new reason for living."
