I am moving here soon and I have 5 guitars to consider.. It's a two day moves with a stop to a hotel in between. Other than tuning the guitars down what can I do to ensure they survive? MY car isn't an option because it is being towed behind the truck, but I am worried the truck will be too hot for them.. any advice?

I wasn't necessarily referring to the friendliness of the employess (though that is certainly a factor to consider), just to the fact that UPS is notorious for damaging a lot of packages.

I see a UPS guy once a day, they changed their routes a few months ago. The guy we used to have was extremely friendly and accommodating, he would gloat about how much harder and better he worked than the FedEx guys. The new guy hates his job and tells me about the second-hand third-class equipment UPS uses and how much better Purolator is.
I take some packages to Purolator almost everyday where they are always completely stress free, and to FedEx where there are many happy folks and only a couple who are curt. I used to deal with another courier where they were all stressed and angry.
I think it’s one-part personal character and three-parts management.
I worked at an office that changed completely over the 19 years I was there (I started very young). When I first started we worked overtime like mad, late into the morning, and we were happy. We were the best at what we did (we knew that if a client left we were likely to see them back), we had the respect of our managers and owners and the big boss was about the nicest man history. The company was sold, then sold again to a very large international. Things started going downhill pretty quick after the first sale. By the time I left I was surrounded by a completely different group of people, all unhappy, unmotivated and managed by sociopaths, and we were losing clients all the time.
Direct management, that level one-up, determines day-to-day happiness and upper management determines fulfilment. |

Off topic a little but with my job I work with FedEx (which daily brings about 8 packages.. usually from two different drivers) and UPS which brings me up to 50 packages (one guy who comes twice daily...) and the FedEx people are the biggest jerks ALWAYS. The thing is, it's the same people everyday from both companies.. I've always found that kinda odd..

I'm not affiliated with FedEx either, but UPS is a big steaming pile of crap, and I would say that same thing. Ship with FedEx.

DON'T ship UPS. They're notorious for causing serious damage to musical instruments. Fed Ex, on the other hand is known to generally take much better care of their packages. (I am in no way affiliated with Fed Ex)

i don't even know if i would trust them. i would recommend buying a shitload of bubblewrap and, well, wrapping them in it

Depending on the price or sentimental value of your guitars, you may want to pay extra to ship them using FedEx, UPS or another shipping company. It can't hurt to call a few places to get an idea on how much it would cost. Your guitars will arrive much safer & happier. |

The furthest I've taken mine is a few hundred miles strapped into the passenger seat, so I can't really help, but you have my good luck wishes.

What kind of guitars and cases? Summer's heat just isn't going to be good. How big is the truck's cab? I've never worried too much about solid-bodies, but anything designed to be loud is fragile.

This page has some good advice: Wad up a couple of pieces of newspaper and put one on each side of the endpin...in the space behind the neck of the guitar at the neck joint...behind the headstock to serve as a cushion.
