I was just looking at Frank Black tabs at "ultimate" guitar.com

http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/frank_black_tabs.htm

I don't know how this website works, but I noticed some tabs that were directly ripped off from FrankBlack.net. They give no credit to who tabbed it, but worse, they don't include everything they should. For instance, they chopped off the top of my tab of Blast Off, and in that they took out the tuning that is used.

Silly assholes.

Wouldn't it technically be against copyright law? Since you are copying his or her words and posting it them on a public forum (i.e. - the internet). I imagine if it is illegal, most record labels and artists don't care because they probably don't lose money off it. But, it's the principle.

Taborama got shut down because of copyright laws, I think. First they showed a message saying they were dealing with copyright laws, then they didn't even exist anymore. Which sucks because Taborama was awesome.

Ah, yes, I completely agree.

Oh, I didn't mean that FB.net was in danger of that. I was just pointing out that some of those lyrics sites (and probably the tab sites, too) are run by unscrupulous a-holes out for a fast buck.

Yeah, the RIAA has gone after certain sites for posting lyrics, tabs, etc. Don't think we have to worry since we have permission and FB is not really on that particular bandwagon to hell (thank goodness!).

I've noticed a lot of those shitty lyrics sites have removed lyrics "at the artist's request" (or, more likely, the artist's label's attorney). Some of those sites were also responsible for adware installations on Windows machines. They're scumbags.

The tabs are Frank's, which is why I have no problems with them having the tabs on, but if you think these tabs magically appear from thin air, you're quite mistaken. Derek takes a lot of time doing the tabs and ensuring they are correct. That FB wrote them means he has the rights to them ultimately, I don't dispute that, but it is a pretty big disrespect to intentionally take off the name of the guy who tabbed them or the place they were provided from and pass it off as your own. It would be like Derek presenting the tabs as if they were songs he composed.

And since they are 'his work', they should at the VERY least be leaving his name on them. It's just kind of dirty, y'know? Especially for them to be making money on it.

Also, the tab of the complete album...

http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/f/frank_black/honeycomb_album_crd.htm

...is a direct rip-off of Kirk's post in this thread...

...assuming it wasn't Kirk himself who posted it.

I've seen some tab disclaimers saying it's the "author's representation" of the song or something like that. I mean, they do sell tab books in music stores, which I doubt the artist gets much money off of. They didn't "write it" or publish it. Some artists may "approve" of it and say the chords are good or something. I haven't really researched this, I'm just assuming.

I'd much rather the FB.net tabs be nowhere else but here. Especially since they might be amongst other tabs that could be way wrong. So feel free to send them a letter, Dean. I sent them a little message myself, but you should too. I wouldn't mind if they kept them up, provided each stolen file had "Tab taken from FrankBlack.net/tabs." or something along those lines. Maybe say "Get ad-free Frank Black tabs at FrankBlack.net" too. ha.

Obviously if you google "Frank Black tabs," ours comes up first and, I imagine 95% of people click that link first. But, as far as I can tell, all the Dog in the Sand tabs are from FB.net, and there are other select tabs from different albums. This is what it says at the top of "Velvety":

i got this from derek its not ver good but hey you'll get it

Wait a minute..."his work"...aren't these tabs technically Franks??? No offense...
Cult_Of_Frank Posted - 07/06/2006 : 15:37:14
I'm going to send them a letter; what are your feelings on allowing them to keep the tabs up? I'm going to insist that they include the source and who tabbed it, but the bigger question is if you want them up at all, or would you rather I asked to take them down?

Since they're your work, I'll leave this to you. In any case, if you could get me a list of which tabs are yours that would probably help the cause.

Cheers.
