Hi guys i wondered if any of you could give me tips into how to solo fast, i thought mayby learning the petonic? scale would be useful but im not sure if there are any other excercises out there i could be doing to help |

Pick a solo you like and learn it - or bits of it broken down - in all 12 keys. First one I really had fun with was Django's Blue Drag.

LOL. "Have you mastered soloing yet?" That should be the title of an Yngwie Malmsteen record or something. The title of my own record would be more like "Solo? What solo?"

Learn all the classic solos, no matter how tricky they seem first off. No guitarist really "improvises", they're just drawing on this huge bank of guitar licks/phrases stored in their memory that they learnt years back.
Not to say "just copy famous solos in your own material" or anything, but getting familiar with certain patterns and techniques that crop up in those solos will just further your playing.
Look at all those awesome Santiago solos. They're pretty simple (although not always!) to figure out and play. Figure out the scales he's using (hint: blues scale with a few random notes :D) and how what he's playing works within the scale. That's the best advice I could probably offer.

well i dont think ive mastered it just yet, but i have definately got a lot faster, learning the pentatonic scale was good help as to were the excersises, but with practice it should be okay. Soloing is the thing I have just never been able to master. Well, I shouldn't say master, but I think after all my years of playing, I should be able to just jam over some basic chords. I hate the way I sound. I recently bought a Boss RC-20 loop station. I plan to just keep laying down a groove and jam over it until I get better and better. |

When you're learning a scale, try learning it up then down,
then up and down the 1st, 3rd, 5th
then up and down the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th
then up and down the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th (that's the 2nd btw)
then up the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th and down the complete scale
then up the complete scale and down the 7th, 5th, 3rd, 1st
and combinations thereof
Also try the same with the 2nd, 4th and 6th (also called the 9th, 11th and 13th respectively) and you can even use any of those as a root note for another scale, scales within the scales. Listen to a couple of blues by Charlie Parker (Now's The Time or Blues For Alice are gooduns), you'll find out you can play all the notes instead of just sticking to a fixed pattern, and if you hit one sounds off, remember you're never more than one fret away from one sounds better.

Do that excerise, using one finger per fret- so your 1st finger does the 1st fret, 2nd finger 2nd fret, and so on. If it's a bit too much of a stretch, try it higher up the freboard. Getting good independance for each finger is a real important skill for a decent lead guitarist. Don't just rely on your first 2 fingers to do all the work.
Also, learn the pentatonic (major and minor) and blues scale (pentatonic min with added flattened 5th) like your life depended on it- when you hear a cool solo in rock music, 90% of the time these are the scales they'll be using.
