Anyone know what is played on keyboard at the start of Gouge on the Monkey Gone To Heaven bootleg, that is if there is any other keyboard players/drummers out there. Seems we're very scarce around these parts.

When Rich played in Regina, he did a run-up to a G# octave, held it, and then a staggered G# chord (G# B D# B D# high G# D# B G#)x2 with the right hand while holding that bottom G# - again this is from work, so no way to confirm. And then a bunch of other stuff. Eric's intro in some bootlegs I've heard starts on G# but goes down in more of a scale. G# F# E-D#-E-D# C# low G# B C# D# ... etc

I am also interested by the keyboard part. I think that it follows the bass part : G# B E. I am not really sure, but play the chords and you will know the right notes.

To be honest, I've heard versions with an octave or, I don't know off the top of my head, maybe a 4th down (d#)? I'm at work so it's hard to hear it/picture it in my head. I'd like to hear that boot.

He does something with the g# which doesn't seem to be explained anywhere, people keep saying it's just a "variation on the chord" but keyboard is not my native instrument so I haven't really got a clue what i'm doing.
Thanks for the help.

What exactly do you want to know? I don't know about that bootleg but Eric/Rich/whomever is playing at the given time generally just works within the bassline (start on G#). If you go listen to the live Frank Black version on the CBC with Rich on keys, it's pretty simple to follow along. It's at justconcerts.ca

I suggest a nice drawbar organ.
