I saw it transcribed in Total Guitar this way, as frank black conspiracy has it, so I used to play it like this;

There's at least 2 guitars playing that opening strum, and I think they're playing slightly different chords. The acoustic sounds like a chord, one of the overdrive guitars on the right sounds like just open strings.
I'm pretty sure either of these two will get you close enough.

I remember FB playing the D's as a barre on the A string, so this makes sense. There's a couple of clashing notes, I think thats what makes it so hard to figure out.

it's definately a variation of D.
Number 13 has it sounding nice, similar to my 2nd chord up top, but I add the D root note on the A string to give it a little more beef. listening to the live recordings it sound more a barre chord than an open ringing out (hence the extra finger on the fret board).

It's so similar to HDN but that opening chord is just too 'pretty' major sounding.
The Pixies version is a little dirtier (sorry, best way i could describe it).

I've got three or four that work just as well:
You're usually looking at a root of G, with a seventh and a sus4 in there. Alternative cobinations include 303213 (as apparently shown to Gary Moore by George Harrison), or even 553533, which may sound out at first - try letting it ring and check out the sympathetic harmonic.

I think it's a D, not a G. Out of the options listed here, I think number 13's is closest.

Howdy. I'm pretty sure its FBC's first choice, 330011, a G7sus4. That's the nearest I've found to it, and I know one or two guitar magazine transcribers who'll agree with me.
Don't get me started on the 'Hard Day's Night' chord though...

You can play the D chord like this : A and D strings open, with C at the fifth case on the G string and F at the Sixth case on the B string. It sounds right to me. Or simply a D chord at the fifth case... |
