does anyone do this much, especially with pixies or frank black songs? although not new to guitar, i've never really looked at lead guitar - scales and such - until a few days ago.

i had a go at the first three lines of motorway to roswell (from "on a holiday..." - which can generally be applied to the rest of the verse, i think...) just to see if i could, and i got something that sounds alright by me:

G|-----------9--6--------------------6--6--6--4--6--9--4----------------
D|--9--6--9-----------6--6--4--6----------------------------------------

again, i'm new to this so it could be completely wrong - correct if you wish.

but yeah... was just wondering.

well, to me it looks like the melody i came up with sticks to the B major pentatonic scale, though i used the 4th fret on a string a couple of times, which is the same as the 9th the string bellow. sorry if i confused you as to what this topic was about. basically asking if anyone has tried this with any other songs, and if they have if they could post them. also to check out mine.

I'm not sure what you're talking about, but here's some info.

His vocals mostly stay within the B major pentatonic scale, that is:
G|--6-8-----
D|--6--9----
A|--6--9----
E|---7-9----

What's great about the pentatonic scale is, you can alter the bass line all around it while the melody sticks within the few notes above.

additional info...
B major scale
E|--67------
B|---7-9----
G|--6-89----
D|--6-89----
A|--67-9----
E|---7-9----

thats pretty damn cool! just played the ol' Trompe and it fits so well. think you found the "infamous missing second lead" to the song (if there was one).
I play rhythm but attempted lead work many a time. i so wanna be a student to the six string, i've studied the scales from major to minor, pentatonic and harmonies but for some reason lead work just wont stick in my brain, and ive been playing since i was 13.

One day i'm determined to nail it. I try but I fail. One day!
