Black Orbits Past Pixies 'Planets'

Additional details have come to light surrounding "Frank Black Francis," a forthcoming two-disc set from Pixies singer/guitarist Frank Black. The 28-track collection features 15 pre-Pixies demos on one disc and 13 new recordings of Pixies songs with Two Pale Boys' Andy Diagram and Keith Moline. It will arrive in mid-to-late October via spinART.

Black told Billboard.com earlier this month that the re-recordings stemmed from his desire to augment the demo material, which is of substandard audio fidelity but has been in high demand for commercial release for years. "I did them to balance out the sh*ttiness of this little time-capsule piece, so that Joe Blow, who may not know who the heck I am or who the Pixies are, wouldn't feel completely ripped off if he buys this," he said.

The demos include early versions of "Isla De Encanta," "Caribou," "Broken Face," "Ed's Dead," "Nimrod's Son" and "Subbacultcha," among others.

As for the sessions with Diagram and Moline, Black chuckled, "I just sang some lyrics into a microphone and said, 'See you later,' and then they went nuts. It's this sort of freeform, not jazzy, but kind of new-age-y weirdo thing. It's not really like a new record. It's more like an experiment."

Pixies favorites reworked by Black include "Velouria," "Monkey Gone to Heaven," "Where Is My Mind?," "Cactus," "Wave of Mutilation" and "Planet of Sound."

The reunited Pixies will kick off an extensive North American tour Saturday (Sept. 4) in Bend, Ore. Black says set lists will vary each night and will draw from a pool of about 40 songs. That roster represents "more or less what we think the audience wants to hear, maybe with a little bit of what we wanted to play."

Meanwhile, plans are moving forward on "Teenager of the Year," a musical centering on the Pixies. Creator Josh Frank recently told PixiesMusic.com he expects workshopping to begin on the project in the next few months.

Here is the track list for "Frank Black Francis":

Those 'pre-Pixies demos' actually look very much like early Pixies demos...

This definitely is the Sing for your supper tape.
All of the songs are done by CT solo, and they sound excellent!
And of course, it contains the third known (and only studio version) recording of Boom chicka boom, which is a little slower than the live versions done with the Pixies.

I'll certainly buy FBF, but I guess it's an überfan thing, like the Purple tape

I'm bored with the valleys and bored by the peaks. So I bought a ticket to the Pixies

it aren't those 1986 demos either
I hope it's the sing for your super songs
I love those 2 I downloaded

Ack! All this time I've been eagerly anticipating finally owning non-bootleg, pure copies of "Keeping in Time," "Draw Attention," "Gemini," and "Silhouette." I had no idea that's not what was meant by pre-Pixies demos...

pre-pixies demos? i doubt they'll be studio demos, more along the lines of those 4 other pre-pixies demos.

The version I have of Boom Chicka Boom is at WERS, a very good quality version relative to the other one I have (not sure from where).

I don't know that these are studio recordings necessarily, so I wouldn't say that BCB is or was recorded in a studio just yet.

well, I've heard the song before, if that's what you're asking. If you mean a high-quality studio recording, I've never heard it. The version I've heard sounds like a shoddy 4-track version or a boombox recording or something. But as far as I can tell, it was full-band

I know there are the two live recordings; I was talking about studio though. This will be very interesting to hear.
