Frank's appearance in the recent They Might Be Giants documentary came up in another thread. I'm wondering if anyone else found it odd. Frank appears a couple times, and at one point has some very kind things to say about TMBG's Flood. Immediately after this clip, the director, who's interviewing TMBG, tries to get them to talk about Frank. There's a highly uncomfortable silence and they change the subject. Anyone know if the Johns have had some kind of spat with Frank or something? |

if there was an uncomfortable silence, which I don't recall, it is probably due to the fact that the John's are very humble guys and seem pretty uncomfortable when complimented.
Also, I have a pretty awesome Frank/TMBG bootleg. The band is Frank, Joey, Feldman, Nick Vincent and Tony Maimone. They are joined about halfway through the set by John, John and I think Kurt Hoffman.

Yeah, my band covers "NYC" I was adamant about doing Lyle's solo justice. No complaints, though.

Yeah, according to the EP's credits, Lyle plays on the "Oddballs" cover and the Totally Remade "The Devil Went Down To Newport." He also did guitar work on TMBG's "New York City."

I believe that Lyle Workman played on it as well. He helped Flansburgh out with a number of things, including some bitchin' work on the album Factory Showroom. And at the end of Mono Puff's version of Oddball, you can hear Flansburgh say "This is for Frank Black." Quite a nice little nod. And does anybody here remember the "They Might Be Frank" mini-tour around Christmas of '93? I wish I could have seen it. Frank Black was backed up by TMBG and they played songs off of Frank's first record and TMBG songs. There's a nice recording of one of the shows out there somewhere. I've only heard some of it.

TMBG and the Pixies actually toured together way back in the day. And the bootlegs of the short They Might Be Frank tour are rather splendid. I haven't heard any in years but you can ocasionally find the random mp3 here or there. I find it very hard to believe that there's any resentment or bad karma between any of those guys. Not to say that you were exaggerating or embellishing anything, Alpha. I think it was just the way AJ edited the piece. It might have been more of a "Yeah, Frank loves TMBG. We'd talk about Frank more, but this is a TMBG documentary" type of thing. I'd love to see A.J. Schnack (spelling) do a documentary about Frank.

Broken Face--you're right, it was the DVD commentary. I've listened to it again and have to take back my "highly uncomfortable silence" comment. It's not so bad as all that. But it's still kind of strange. Since they're friends and have worked together, I expected they might have something to say about Frank or his story, but they didn't. Just a little weird, that's all. |

i think you might be reading too much into this "moment" you experienced. by all accounts, TMBG and Frank are long-time friends. there are pictures of Frank at the GIGANTIC screening in NY. why would he go to the screening if they had a falling out? |

So I checked the DVD and couldn't find it--just the interview with Frank. The weird thing is the people I saw it with all remember it vividly. So it's either mass insanity, or it's been cut from the DVD--since we saw the theatre version. Anyone who saw it at a theatre remember it? |

I own the gigantic DVD, and I don't know what you are talking about. Anything i've ever heard from Frank about TMBG has been positive, they're good pals I believe. I remember back in the day Frank hosted MTV's 120 Minutes (Teenager of the Year era) and played TMBG's "istanbul" video, and even mentioned that he owned bootleg CD's of the band...so he must like them. |

I don't remember them being asked either, but there was a very recent quote from Flansburgh where he referred to how highly they regard Frank. I think it was a Q&A thing with fans, someone asked him what they thought of Frank Black.
Even if it did happen, I don't think it's harsh not to return a compliment, as long as you're honest about it.

Wierd. I don't think I'm imagining it. The people I saw the movie with had the same reaction. If you have the chance, I recommend taking a look at it again. Don't remember the details, but it follows the part where Frank mentions he didn't initially think much of Flood, but started listening to it since it was the only cassette he had while driving--eventually he decided he loved it. Someone (I don't remember if it was the director) interviewing the Johns seemed to want them to comment on this, but they completely avoided the topic. Seemed rather harsh not to return the complement.
I'd love for them to tour together again too. Missed it the first time. Even better, how about a They Might Be Pixies tour? |

I think Frank played with them at a show not <i>too</i> long ago; quite some time after the documentary was recorded - I doubt there was a spat.

I've seen Gigantic and I'm not sure I remember the director talking to TMBG about Frank. I don't think there was any spat. Myself, I wish Frank would tour with The Giants again, that would be my personal geeky version of Heaven! |
