The reason why apple only released it in the US is due to copyrights and licenses. Apple is licenced to distribute cooking vinyl releases in the US but not in europe.
Moreover Copyrights are different in every european countries. |

As the title track, SMYT should have been the closer to the album proper - it's a great song. I like the other three also, but they probably work better as b-sides. Hopefully they'll all make it to CD soon... please!

Strange, I really like Show Me Your Tears, though A Dab'll Do Ya is top of the list. Really don't like Preacher's Daughter and don't mind Don't Clip Your Wings (thought it was a funny song choice to perform on 'Gonzo' though.) |

I was finally able to get these songs. Of the four, "Preacher's Daughter" is my favorite. I especially like the chorus, and its use of steel guitar. "Don't Clip Your Wings" is pretty good, too. I'm guessing the mention of Cleopatra has something to do with Frank's ex-wife, since I think he's said something about her being Cleopatra in another life. I'm not so thrilled by "A Dab'll Do Ya," but maybe it'll grow on me, as Frank's songs are wont to do. "Show Me Your Tears" is, well, average, I guess. Average Frank is still pretty darned good, though. I like the keyboards on the song. I guess I can see why it was cut from the album, although it's amusing that they still kept that as the album title when the song wasn't on it. I know that's not the first case of that happening, though.

I don't know if it is still happening, but these songs were all supposed to appear on an upcoming "b-sides" compilation. Let's hope they get their shit together and actually release this thing. |

Man, I have never heard such whining about new music being available in all my life. It's a few songs... and it's available in a new format. We all know the limitations and the situations regarding downloadable music for sale, and what sort of marketing ploys and deals with record companies have to be made to make it lucrative for the artists in the long run. So... I don't know what the complaint is about. Sure, maybe some have a harder time, but it seems everyone is getting to hear it one way or another. The other thing is that for those that have been there... it's Pub for FB&tC, A big photo, bio, songlist.... it's nice... great stuff for the man and his band. I think that if you think about it, this is better than it not having been released at all. Obviously.
I do understand some INITIAL frustrations, but cmon. I hear complaints about everything from lossy formats to iTunes lack of sale in other countries. AAC is a well recognized audio format (didn't it get chosen for new standard for DVD? am I making that up?) and I am sure that if Apple could get things in order technically and legally they'd be more than happy to sell to the entire world... so...
Give it a chance... support it... and maybe next time, access will be greater. As for the complaint about "internet downloadable music ruining the music business and that stuff about CD's walking out of the store" I get that, but there's not reason we can't have both.
I say Kudos to Frank and whoever for deciding to take a chance on a new way to get his music out there to those that might say buy a song, but not a whole album. Another thing... the new Pixies album "Wave of Mutilation" which is ... well you know what it is.... has like 22 songs on it (guesstimating) and it goes for 10 bucks on iTunes. I imagine access to it by other countries can't be far off...til then, I"m sure you've all found a way to hear the good stuff on the EP by now.

About iTunes' propietary format. Yes, it's a drag, but it's a faster download, sounds good, and you can burn songs to disc. Then install CDex or another free utility to burn the disc back to MP3 format on your hard drive. Degradation is minimal. I used to transfer CDs to cassette tape, so that's my perspective. No biggie. |

What is the difference between a "U.S.-only Internet exclusive" and an "import CD?" Uh, not a whole lot. Artists have long tried out limited-edition material in specialized markets. If you don't have a credit card or live outside the U.S., you'll still be able to get the songs somehow, maybe just not *right now*. Maybe you'll have to be crafty.
Anyway, the exclusivity was likely part of Apple's deal with Frank Black. The carrot, you know? They need something stores can't offer (unique content); he needs something stores can't offer (distribution). FB was on EMusic early on and still is, so he's into online distribution. It's a good gig for an artist like him, with a moderately sized but loyal audience. Profits with less middleman B.S. But he still has to play the game a bit to get widespread online distribution. EMusic is a small player. Apple is not. Lighten up and be patient! You'll eventually get these songs. You'd likely have *never* gotten these songs at a record store. |

I got this from SoulSeek too (searched for Frank Black iTunes). I'm not opposed to online only releases like this (I listen to all of my cd's on my computer in mp3 format) as long as they encode it in high enough quality. However I don't want to have to download and keep the iTunes program on my computer just to listen to 4 tracks, plus I thought it was pretty lame that they wanted me to download iTunes and register before I could even see what they are selling, I think they charge too much (99 Cents a track? TOTY would cost $21.78 and their overheads are close to nothing) and they resrict what you do with the files too much. Ohh and then there's the fact I live in the UK.
If they had a shop similar to hearitagain.net where you can see what's available through the webpage then be able to pay and download and play it in your regular media player (cover art would be nice too) then that would be groovy but I think as it is they still have a long way to go.

Yea, I know I went overboard. And I know that I can get it without too much trouble, and most likely will do so soon. I am something of a completist, especially with the last ten years of Frank. However, what's so good about the new tech? I could see it as an addition to disc sales, but why exclusively thru such a proprietary outlet? I'm not that savvy on the politics of illegal copying but my sense is that since the industry assumes they can't beat the copiers, they'll just have to join them, via protocols with built-in limits on copying and quality degradation as you depart from the mother format (in this case whatever iTunes uses). Is that what this is about? Are we to assume that the artist gets a higher percentage of sales if the rights are allocated solely to a single electronic outlet that need not fear competition from disc sales? And the artist gets to justify the arrangement with the consolation that the cost to "patrons" is lower (so long as they have what it takes to buy into the proprietor's protocol)?
I agree with what you said about other types of exclusivity. I can understand it with the promos, except when they include ridiculously rare versions, but not the limited edition come-on. OK, FB may print a limited number of copies simply because he doesn't want to grossly exceed demand, but just in case demand may turn out to exceed supply, why ever commit to a limit? It's like selling a novel in limited edition. Seems pretty bogus, and I think most of us expect the limited edition b-sides to appear later on some FB&C b-sides compilation. I rant, and it's not that big a deal, but it doesn't seem like there needs to be any issue over any of this at all. Just sell us the fucking discs. |

since i live in europe i HAD to get it from soulseek.i don't see anything sadistic or greedy in publishing something exclusively on itunes though.other exclusive stuff like promos or limited edition cd singles are equally hard to get for fans (see double disc versions of older albums that had unreleased b-sides).if you are really a fan you can always find a way to get stuff.i would like to have a material copy of this ep though with artwork and everything.i guess that my only objection is the format more than the exclusivity(i don't like to pay for a download.i still prefer the old fashioned record shops or mail orders at max).anyway since itunes will be available worldwide sooner or later i think that in general it was a good move to embrace a new type of distribution.

It really pisses me off that this material was released in such an arbitrarily exclusive manner. I don't know who's behind it, if it's Frank, or Goes, or who, but given that everybody knows that Frank's cultish fans crave every morsel, why do this? Seems boneheaded, sadistic, or greedy. |

I just wanted to pop in and say thanks to everyone who's purchased this EP on iTunes. I understand that it's been really frustrating for a lot of people to whom it hasn't been available, but I also know you're all pretty good at working out ways to be able to hear this stuff regardless. It's super frustrating that iTunes is still a US-Only thing, but making it worldwide involves a lot of licensing nightmares so I can't say I blame them at this point.
That said, one of the best things for us about releasing this via iTunes is that it shows that iTunes is really starting to pay attention to indie labels. that's a *big* thing, especially in the state of music right now where a LOT of bands/artists are doing better on indies than on majors. There are still lots of areas in which majors get treated more seriously than indies, and the success of indie labels on iTunes is hopefully an eye-opener in that regard. The great response to the Frank Black EP on iTunes has not only furthered it, but made iTunes more willing to work with indie labels like us - they're all about us doing exclusive stuff. So far we've been able to do a live Richard Thompson EP and preview tracks from the new Church and Paul Kelly albums (an idea that I *really* like - a high profile, easily accessible, legal way of getting good quality versions of songs from an album you've been waiting for before that album comes out.)
So anyway, thanks!!! If that was incoherent blame it on the drugs I'm on from having my wisdom teeth out yesterday. |

It took me the entire weekend to find and download these songs but I finally got them...
Great tracks indeed, especially DCYW and SMYT. I really wonder why they were cut from the LP. They would have been good b-sides, at least. |

A few things for those of asking about burning AAC files and what not. Itunes allows you to burn them directly to a CDR through itunes with and internal burner. It does everything at once, the conversion and the burning. Here's the catch, you can only burn it to a CDR 10 times and then you're done. You can take that CD however and put it into say MusicMatch like I have and pull them off as MP3s or WAVs. Then you are free to do what you want with them. |

I may as well review these:
1) "Don't Clip Your Wings" -- Is that harmonica-via-keyboard 6 seconds in, and scattered throughout? Whatever makes that delightful sound, I love it. And the background vocals! Man, this type of background vocals takes me back to the sounds of Frank Black and the Catholics. This song is great; it really gets in your head after a few plays.
2) "A Dab'll Do Ya" -- Yes! Groove out, Frank and friends. A good, locomotive bass riff. I really like the way Frank calls out that chorus. Awesome, awesome ending (the last 45 seconds)!
3) "Preacher's Daughter" -- Reminds me a bit of "A New England" by Billy Bragg (and covered nicely by The Groovie Ghoulies). A really pretty bridge; I dig that harmonica/piano mix!
4) "Show Me Your Tears" -- Wow. I can so see this on Teenager of the Year. Really punchy. Rocking keyboards! Love the "I puked my guts" line.
Bottom line: This EP is amazing, and blows the other SMYT b-sides well away. There's no reason at all these songs should have been scrapped (although "Show Me Your Tears" ironically might sound out of place) for an internet only release.

For the record, I think the tunes on this ITUNES EP are far superior to those B-sides on the second Nadine single (Snake Oil, etc). Show Me Your Tears has a weird, spastic organ a la Question Mark and the Mysterions; Preacher's Daughter, though another country-tinged number, is definitely more Dylan-like than the supposedly Dylan-like stuff on SMYT; Dab'll Do Ya has a pretty kick-ass riff and has FB dusting off his rarely-used scream of yore; and, well, Don't Clip Your Wings is pretty cool too. I was impressed, so it's worth searching for. Then again, I didn't have any expectations, so... |
