Hello, I've see two posts on Instagram in the last two days by The Man showing recording equipment and the music playing over the posts are FB&TC songs... I wonder if they are going to record or tour? What's he hinting at I wonder? |

Ben Mumphrey is a big hint and I guess the mobile recording studio is another one
But you're absolutely right otherwise
Mumphrey worked on SMYT, BLD, DW and some Catholics reissues
Honeycomb too
And only one Pixies session (Warren Zevon cover)
And some Breeders too btw (Mountain Battles, Last Splash reissue)
But Mumphrey seems to come along with the mobile unit. Because he was the one who assembled the equipment with FBF in the first place.
He didn't work on pre-mobile Catholics sessions.
So yes, we just have to wait and see

After looking at a few posts, I'm leaning more towards this being solo or demo project using his old recording equipment than a Catholics album until we have more hints otherwise. |

These posts do make me think he's recording or about to be recording something. His latest post also mentions firing up the equipment with Ben Mumphrey who appears to have done past Catholics records. |

Maybe the TOTY gigs went so well last year he wants to do it again, but for a different era heh heh. I'd vote for DITS or Black Letter Days. |

Two things spring to mind:

or he wants to sell some gear soon
I assume it has been in storage for 20 years
Why would he showcase it now?

I know very little about recording equipment: is the equipment he is showing photos of the same the Catholics were famous for working with back in the day? |

To be honest, the biggest difference was during the shows.
I've seen at least one show of every Frank Black tour since the 2nd Teenager tour and Lyle was way above Rich live.
Dave P. was fine (yet not as good as Lyle but who is ?)
On records, I don't mind Rich but Lyle's part are more memorable. |

Listened to Devils Workshop for the first time in a while. Dave Philips was great on that album as well as all the others, he was a fine guitarist indeed, sad he is no longer with us.
Interesting there was no Rich on this album and Lyle was credited as an additional musician - you can really hear his signature sounds sprinkled through parts of the album. |

Well Lyle was formally only on one FB&TC record - the self-titled brown album. But he was also on the COR with the same constellation, so technically he was on two records as well as on large parts of TOTY. I would say the lead/second guitar on these 3 albums is very different from the majority of the Catholics albums where Rich was the guitar man.

I didn't even know there were two different lead guitars and never noticed any difference.
I wonder if people here didn't know about that ahead of time they'd hear anything different in the guitar parts on those albums....? I just assumed it was all the same Catholics all the time. |

I think Lyle is much, much "better" and creative on the recordings, and his playing can really elevate Frank's songs (such as Joey Santiago does). I truly would not say the same about Rich - but his style, looks, attitude, and overal appearance in the live shows (including switching between keys and guitars) is priceless. His "shooting" into the audience with the guitar during the staccato lyrics ("Romanov - off - off") of Thallasocracy is hillarious.

I love both, I think Lyle seems to write more structured parts compared to Rich, who is more spontaneous. For me, Lyle just edges it. It's great comparing both styles on the Black Letter Days & Devil's Workshop dual release albums.
