Posted - 03/13/2024 : 09:30:14 These releases are aimed at different segments of the market. I don't think they're banking on super-completists who want both pressings. The box set is aimed at probably more at the general collector but not necessarily the audiophile/high-end stereo guys. Half-speed mastering, apart from any subjective quality, is a different, a more labor intensive process, and the album was recorded on analog tape so in theory there is information there to be extracted by this process.
FWIW I bought the box set and don't feel like I need the half-speed mastered version. Obviously there is a degree of milking going on but I don't think it's wildly illogical and I figure they must have vendors who want to stock these things. |

Posted - 03/13/2024 : 06:36:26 to be clear, they can release whatever they want. i have absolutely no issues with that. nobody's making anyone buy anything they don't want.
i just don't really understand why they'd go through the effort of remastering and releasing it again. how many copies are they going to sell?
releasing a reissue box set and then releasing the contents separately a little bit later is something you often see with big names. (or any form of reissuing the reissue, with one extra track or whatever, and again, and once more five years later.) they get enough traction to make a decent amount of money at each go. it doesn't really seem to make much sense for fb+c.
i'm probably looking at this from the wrong angle.

Posted - 03/13/2024 : 06:22:48 i haven't. but i don't think i'd hear much worth reporting, because my hearing isn't that great.
i still find it a very strange release. there's milking it and then there's milking it.
july 2022: Frank Black And The Catholics: The Complete Studio Albums (7LP 180g Clear Vinyl) https://www.demonmusicgroup.co.uk/catalogue/releases/frank-black-and-the-catholics-the-complete-studio-albums-7lp-180g-clear-vinyl/ "All 80 tracks have been newly remastered from the original studio tapes by Phil Kinrade at Alchemy Mastering at AIR."
january 2024: Frank Black and the Catholics: 25th Anniversary (1LP) HALF SPEED MASTER EDITION https://www.demonmusicgroup.co.uk/catalogue/releases/frank-black-and-the-catholics-25th-anniversary-1lp-half-speed-master-edition/ "First ever vinyl reissue of Frank Black and the Catholics’ 1998 debut self-titled album, mastered from the original tapes by Phil Kinrade at AIR Studios"
i can imagine interest for these remasters is quite low. so i'm not even sure this qualifies as milking it.
why remaster the same album again only 1.5 years later? was the first remaster not good enough? is half speed mastering that much better? and nobody knew about this back in 2022? or is it the same remaster, now available separately?
and why claim that it's the first ever vinyl reissue, if you only reissued it 1.5 years ago? a mistake? a lie? (why lie?)

that box set does include "song of the shrimp" and "john the revelator". i guess these are the same.
the box set doesn't include an extra "the black rider", though, and this song is supposed to be previously unreleased. https://www.demonmusicgroup.co.uk/catalogue/releases/frank-black-true-blue-1lp-black-vinyl-7/ quote: Also included is a bonus 7” single featuring three studio outtakes, including a previously unreleased version of ‘The Black Rider’.

Posted - 01/06/2024 : 13:19:54 didn't they just reissue all fb+c albums on vinyl, in a big box set? (2022?) surely those were already remastered? why repeat the same exercise one year later? or is this the same remaster, now available separately?
also, isn't it a bit dodgy to call this the "first ever vinyl reissue", if they only just reissued it (not separately, but as part of a box set)?
