Ray davies: I always liked Frank Black. He did a solo record about ten years ago, and he wanted me to write for him. But it never materialised. Again, we did that one just two acoustic guitars in the room to start wtih and focused on his perfomance and added my vocal afterwards when we'd fenished. He was on tour with the Pixies and had a London date that night. So we did it very quickly. Then I put my own touring band on behind him.

The Kinks are one of THE great bands. Ray Davies is a songwriter supreme.
I would recommend the Kinks best of.

I have to say, The Kinks's "Come Dancing" is a really cool song and I'll always listen to it when it comes on the radio (sadly, that's rare).
I can't stand Supertramp.
It sucks because I'll be listening to the Magnolia soundtrack in bed on headphones and have to turn it off immdiately after Aimee Mann's "Save Me" because "Goodbye Stranger" is the next song. Followed by "The Logical Song". Lame. But then again, those songs actually sound crisp and clear- I'll have to admit that they are good musicians.
Anyway, has anyone heard the new version of "This Is Where I Belong"? The original is one of my favorite FB B-sides, maybe one of my favorite FB songs ever.

Three positive Supertramp posts. Maybe they're not such a yucky band to own up to? I still have Crime of the Century on vinyl. Breakfast in America was the first album I ever bought.

Hmmm...If you ever have the opportunity to listen to "Crime of the Century" on vinyl, you'll appreciate Supertramp as a phenomenal studio band. As far as the Kinks go, with Ray & Dave Davies, rock made leaps and bounds. Where have all the good times gone indeed. |

Just to be negative, I was listening to Rush
Chronicles today, about half-way through The
Spirit of Radio I thought, they can be a one
of the greatest bands. Closer to the Heart.
Near the end of the second disc is pretty bad.
But I'm Canadian and therefore terribly biased.
The Kinks from my childhood was Destroyer, the
album Give the People What They Want and State
of Confusion. I didn't think anyone could not
like All Day and All the Night or You Really
Got Me.
And Supertramp has some nice songs. |

We all liked a yucky band when we were kids (Supertramp then Madness for me).
jimmy I think you're half right. I grew up around Kinks but it's just too quaint for me. It's a long goodbye to the British Empire. I think that's why it sounds dated. It's frustrating because you just think, 'Cut those apron strings already!'.

I remember when I was ten I could'nt tell any stylistic difference between the pixies, genesis, the sex pistol rush and xtc. I thought S EXPRESS was better than all that old rock shit. And I thought the Beach Boys where gay. |

Is it just me or are The Kinks the kind of band that you had to grow up with to like? I picked up that Kinks Kollection on tape about ten years ago cause I wanted to hear the original versions of "This Is Where I Belong" and "Days" (Elvis Costello closes his covers album "Kojak Variety" with that song.
I didn't like any of the songs much. And they sounded very, very dated.
Some of my older friends who are in their late 30s and early 40s love the band Rush. I don't get that at all. They've gone to see their shows and buy all these deluxe re-issues. The Rush song I'm most familiar with is "Tom Sawyer" and I think it's wicked fucking lame.

The BIG problem of Ray Davies is rock FM. The 70's and mostly the 80's took him to a wrong place: that's not where he belongs! You could hear strays of pre rock FM in a LOT of 60's bands (even the stones) but NOT in the Kinks... It's one of the big casting mistakes of rock history. |

Brian introduced me to the Kinks, so I'd suggest asking him for his great Kinks Kompilation. It's an amazing band. I'd start with Village Green and Lola too. Don't have many Kinks records but I'd rank them like this:
1) Lola
2) Village Green
3) Arthur
4) Something Else
5) Kinks Kontroversy (not too good)
and Brian talks highly of Muswell Hillbillies.

"Arthur" is a brilliant Kinks album and would be a great introduction for a Frank Black fan. "Village Green Preservation Society" and "Lola Vs. Powerman" are also top-notch. |

Probably pitchfork being lazy and mistakingly calling him Frank Black instead of Black Francis. Anyone recommend any Kinks albums or compilations? I've been meaning to get into them, but I don't really know where to start. |
