Pete Yorn to Release Frank Black-Produced Album in September

Published on June 9, 2010 in CD Releases

On a whim in the summer of 2008, singer-songwriter Pete Yorn settled down in the studio at the behest
of Frank Black (Pixies) and recorded an album in Salem, OR. The self-titled record’s sessions lasted just
five days, but the ”resulting songs are raw, born of shattered nerves and shifting dreams – yet edged
with hope,” according to press materials. First single “Sans Fear” finds the usually soft-voiced Yorn shifting
“between soaring harmonies and ravaged lead vocals as he contemplates a relationship’s end.”

Of the unlikely collaboration, Black said, “Pete told me he wanted to better define himself as an artist. I
think he just wanted to rock out. But as we headed down a path of realization I stripped him down a whole
bunch. We battled in the best sort of way. I tried to get the session into a fearless and raw place, and to
his artistic credit Pete took his songwriting to a fearless and raw place. This listener will find his or herself
sitting right next to Pete on the couch. And the record totally rocks out.”

Pete Yorn will be released September 28th on Vagrant Records. Fall tour plans will be announced soon.

The spoken part sounds like Charles.
But that's just a sound effect he uses sometimes.
That's a cool old fashioned no show-off song. It's pretty close to some Frank Black songs, like "you ain't me".
Was, finally, Pete Yorn "the black eyed manequin" ???
That song makes me think the first catholics albums would have a better reception today than in its time. It's a great moment for a "grunge revival".

The Whig Standard - Down Stream.

Pete Yorn

Precious Stone

Well, here's a match made in monkey heaven: Troubadour Yorn's forthcoming self-titled album was produced by
none other than Pixies frontman Frank Black. You can tell from this first single: The guitars are grittier; the snare-
thwacking beat is prominent and propulsive; there's a noisy solo and soaring falsetto refrain. "Such crazy feelings
you inspire," Yorn sings. Yeah, we got that. myspace.com/peteyorn www.myspace.com/xxxxx

Spin Magazine Online - EXCLUSIVE DOWNLOAD: New Pete Yorn Song.

Singer-songwriter Pete Yorn is about to release his third album in 14 months, and the self-titled
effort (out Sept. 28) is an unfussy, hard-rocker produced by Pixies frontman Frank Black. Download
the track "Velcro Shoes" below...

...Working with Black, who was introduced by a mutual friend, also
helped Yorn recapture that youthful vigor: The pair produced and
recorded this entire album over five days last summer in Oregon, something Yorn didn't believe was
possible.

"I was telling [Frank], 'Let's just go for an EP, just a five-song thing, maybe,'" says Yorn. "And he
was like, 'Five songs? No way, dude! We're going to do a whole record!' I was like, 'Really? All right,
we'll see.' We got a record and some extra tracks, too."

Yorn already admired Black, both as part of the Pixies and as a solo artist, but working together
deepened his respect. "It felt liberating to bang out some tunes really fast, to capture them live in a
room," Yorn says. "He was so cool. He's just a great guy."

I remember back in 2001 he had a song on the radio called "Life on a Chain" that I liked a lot.
It was from his album Musicforthemorningafter, and once I saw it at the library and almost picked it up but decided not to because I didn't think I'd listen to it.
Still, if that song came on the radio now I'd listen to it.

I haven't heard him, but my mate (who has) calls him Pete Yawn. Possibly harsh.

Yeah, Black Francis recorded Wheels for NSE, after pushing Pete to cover it and realizing that it was actually himself who had the obsession with the song. Last time I explained this I got it wrong and said it was Art Brut instead of Pete Yorn
