Detailing just how far reaching the career of France’s greatest comic auteur Jacques Tati was, this compelling new documentary explores Tati’s career from his roots in the Parisian music-halls of the ‘30s to his rise and ultimate fall from grace after the release of his masterpiece Playtime. An eclectic range of interviewees (including admirers Mike Mills, Frank Black and Sylain Chomet) pay testament to his genius, and a wealth of clips make this an essential viewing for any fan.

** OK, I went and saw it. FB is in it, though I don't know why. Looked like he was interviewed from a hotel bed. It was an hour-long biography of Tati with loads of clips, and very few pertinent interviewees. FB added little to the discussion, academically speaking (nor did Mills or Chomet). Included was a live video of "The Jacques Tati", which felt non sequitur and was augmented with distracting and cheapening visual fx. I'm really surprised the filmmakers couldn't get more useful talking heads. Sorry to say.

I don't think the dvd is available, they're still screening it around the country (I'm assuming with a beta master). A better option might be the Criterion dvd of Playtime that comes with a short doc called "Tati Story", might be more informative -- that is, if he doesn't already have this edition. That or this:

but that's not on dvd yet either....

matto, was the dvd worth buying? I am trying to figure out if it would make a good early father's day present for a huge fan. He has all the movies, so I am not sure if the dvd would really have something new for him. He's not a bf fan, so that wouldn't mean that much to him. Thanks.
