Black Francis - Threshold Apprehension (Cooking Vinyl) UK release date: 7 May 2007
After resurrecting his old band The Pixies for a lap around the festivals, lead singer Black Francis is back with a new single from his forthcoming Bluefinger album, initially being released as a download, with a physical single following in three weeks.
The single and album titles come from the drug- influenced work of Dutch artist Herman Brood who committed suicide a few years ago, but according to Black "My song Threshold Apprehension has nothing to do with the painting except that it [...] has everything to do with my impressions of Herman Brood." Glad we sorted that one out.
The lyrics can be seen as a terse snapshot of Brood's drug-addled life: "I will be the whore/and you'll be my suicide." The song is a return to old form and will doubtless please his fans, with its brutal, basic guitar and wild vocal. There's nothing new here, nothing to surprise, but it certainly does the business. If you like Pixies and his early solo work, Threshold Apprehension is going to please.

Black Francis
Threshold Apprehension
After the Pixies, the guy who trademarked soft-loud songwriting changed his name from Black Francis to Frank Black and began ploughing the lonely acoustic furrow of the soft-soft. Well, hold on to your universe, because Frank Black is dead. Black Francis is back, and this time, he's gunning for the loud-loud, having regained all that trademark fuckwail abandon of old. He's slicing up eyeballs. He'd like you to know. |

Black Francis - Threshold Apprehension
Black Francis as we know is a legend, but as we’ve seen on countless occasions in recent decade’s legendary status generally equates to god-awful quality control.
Thankfully Sir Black Francis is a different kind of entity to his relentlessly disappointing peers and thus ‘Threshold Apprehension’ stands as a brilliant shock of fire-brand indie rock that adds rather than dilutes to Frank Black’s impenetrable heritage.
With the presence of some glorious ‘woo-woos’ and Back Francis’ gnashing drawl working overtime what you’re left with is a single of pure perfection that should by rights be hooked up to the pipe-cleaner arms of fledgling rock bands via a throbbing great intravenous drip to give them just some idea of what being a legendary rock frontman really entails.

Little review on this blog:

"He's using the Black Francis moniker here as the songs were written (and didn't make) the new Pixies album still in the works."
That may in fact be the case, but I don't believe FB has ever stated it. |
