Obviously it's a man who works in a chippy.

I don't know.

DUDE! Thanks for getting that! It was driving my bonkers because I
couldn't figure it out. I kept hearing "ain't no trick being man..."

Turns out I was totally wrong. In the lyrics booklet, Frank scratched out in big letters, "Ain't no chippyin' man." Anybody care to tell me what a chippyin' man is?

Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.

Christ on a bike a Fall thread on the FB site. I'm the happiest lil' fan in fanland

Agree with you 90% Icemancometh, but the latest, Reformation Post TLC, is better, up there with the funniest and best they've/he's done.

And now I promise not to harp on about them anymore on this thread. Listened to Bluefinger for the first time for a few days this morning. Brilliant.

There's an ugly inference in MES' tone that suggests he'd rather be settling scores in a civil war than playing music to middle class wankers. That's outdated. I only mention Cromwell cos Smith would sing about him but to me they're just old bastards with chips on their shoulders fit for one another to slug it out, as long as it's over to the side. As a crank though, he still cracks me up.

Don't worry. Be Happy is the message I go with. Listen to someone who's got it together like FB.

The Fall are an acquired taste. I didn't care too much for them at first, when I bought Extricate in 1989, around the same time I discovered the Pixies.

More than 15 years later, I have all the Fall albums. I think the last few haven't been that great; monochromatic, in my opinion. Their last great record was The Real New Fall LP (Formerly Country on the Click).

Some of the more "easy-listening" Fall albums:
Extricate
Code Selfish
Infotainment Scan
Shiftwork (probably their poppiest, right here)
Middle Class Revolt
Unutterable
Marshall Suite
Wonderful and Frightning World of the Fall

Any serious fan of punk rock should own at least a few Fall records. Their influence is pervasive, even in some of the Pixies' work.

Yeah, I was wondering what "it" meant. I was told today that FB fans should investigate the album 'Fall Heads Roll'. Haven't heard it myself but he reckoned there were similarities on that one.

Irish, me. Don't like Cromwell. Please don't mention his name ; I tend to stockpile canned food and hide under tables when I hear it. Americans and Brits don't seem to like each other much these days....what is this "it" that you think MES doesn't get?

Tempo House came to mind but there are better examples. TH is slower but also has that classic Fall lazy intro. It also features the line 'The Dutch are weeping, in four languages at least'. Apt. MES sings a lot about the Dutch cos of the whole William of Orange thing.

'Winston Churchill had a speech impediment and look what he did. He razed half of London'. Always gets a smile that line

OK, since this thread is about Tight Black Rubber, can you suggest a Fall song that obviously is an influence on TBR?

Of course I liked "Victoria" which is candy, but damn it's catchy.

I've already put the time in on Guided By Voices (which I like about 75% of so it was easier), so I can;t imagine trying to weed through 500 Fall songs to find the gems.

Can anyone put together a "primer" for people who want to get into them, but skip the excruciatingly bad stuff? I want to be a believer. Pretty much all their stuff seems to be on iTunes, so I'm not afraid to put out for a 30-40 song primer.

Thanks!

I guess you know very well that Victoria is a Kinks song, and the Fall version is just a tribute, without any new thing exept a punky/arty touch.
The best of the Fall is very very strange and I guess it has to do with the record companies and the rights. Compared to that, the Best of Frank Black selection is a pure dj masterpiece.

Yeah, I knew, but I like the Fall version better. In fact I try not to listen to it because it gets stuck in my head for days.

If you want to get into the fall i recommend starting with the latest - reformation post tlc.

if you want to go back, maybe start with this nation's saving grace, or bend sinister.

some classic songs would be "wings", "paintwork", "just step s'ways"
"Us 80's 90's"

Their catalogue is so huge now that i doubt any two people would agree on this stuff....

I think even the most hardcore Fall fan must be deluding him/her self if they claim to like everything they've ever recorded. The 'challenging' stuff is just excrutiatingly bad and there is enough of that to fill five or six entire albums. However, there is enough good/great stuff to make up for it. If I was new to the band I just wouldn't know where to begin, I must admit.

As for TBR vocal comparisons I think it's more to do with the sound of the words, the timing and the fact that it's more 'speaking' than 'singing'. Mark E Smith cannot sing but he has a great voice.

Easier. And you could play the old wise guy exatly the same way, getting rid of the sonic youth fans.
It's true that Frank really sounds like Mark E Smith on this one. I didnt notice it though it's obvious.

I agree with this completely. Either I just don't like their sound, or it's too challenging for me or something. I enjoy Wire much more. I think MES's voice is unlistenable, but Frank's is beautiful, so I'm not seeing the comparison. Can someone give me an example? All I have is the "greatest hits" compilation.

I also really like Pavement, who really wanted to be The Fall, but they did it in a way that was a little more listenable. I guess The Fall is kind of like VU in that most people either love or hate the original band, but really love the bands that they clearly influenced. But I also really love VU. Especially since without VU, there would have been no Luna.

My interest in Brood is really piqued. What thoughts on how TBR relates to him? Sure there's drugs but what more?

Can't tell what the chorus is.
Ain't no trip/trick being man - Therefore take drugs or
Ain't no trip/trick be a man - Get off drugs

The Youtube vid for TBR is fun. Families in the 'burbs riding around in Planet of the Apes masks. Shot in the 70s but given a 50s treatment?

Although I love The Fall most of their albums (that I have at least, around half of them) contain at least one unlistenable track or one ridiculously overlong dirge. Most accessible imo: The Wonderfull And Frightening World of..., This Nations Saving Grace, Bend Sinister, Extricate, Shiftwork, Code:Selfish, The Unnuterable. Right, that's completely hijacked this thread.

And you're right about Charles' underrated guitar pickings. Joey's been the only one to properly compliment them. Don't get me wrong I love Lyle and Scott but...now I'm happy that the clocks are put right.

Well... it's not! And you know what? When I watched the Pixies dvds I realized a lot of great guitar parts were actualy Frank's work, especially when he's not singing the part at the same time (just like the intro you're talking about).
One single example among others: the brief guitar part in Gigantic before the final blast (everything breaks and you just hear Frank playing 2 note chords with just two strings, a bit like Santiago in Where is my mind).
He is also the pixies guitarist ! Being with guitar heroes all that time after the pixies, his guitar work was a bit shadowed. Bluefinger came to put the clocks at the right time(french expression).

I think it's really only TBR on Bluefinger that's particularly Fall-like. Can you elaborate?

I keep hearing things that remind me of so many other artists too, for instance the chorus of Angels Come To Comfort You is very Elvis Costello I think.

I've heard him mention them 3 or 4 times. There's a concert recording (Brixton Academy 1990 I think) where he intros Subbacultcha as Fall-sounding. Plus the talking-at-you-rap style that Grotesque refers to is Mark E Smith's style. I'm certain The Fall are huge to FB. They have that full-on-sideways-at-you thing that inspires FB I think, and one of the most impressive back catalogues in history.

Plus I think calling the album Bluefinger is in part a nod to the Fall's I Am Kurious Oranj, another case of a songwriter making an album so heavily inspired by some other branch of the arts.
