I think some of the new songs deserve their own topic. Like this one.

Every time I hear "Demon Girl," I think of old Frank Zappa songs. It's playful in that old '50s and '60s kind of way Zappa used to do. Zappa did a lot of doo-wop early on. This one isn't doo-wop, by any means, but the story in the song does remind me of the stories in the songs from that era.

Is that a real poncho or is that a Sears poncho?

welcome to your new home Juri,

ah the sheer joy of interpretation : it's so funny, i love it too. i think frank just has dozens of guitars, he mentioned it in some interview.
"one guitar should be enough for anybody" is gonna be my signature from now on!

"i'm not impressed. you wanna impress me? take the wheel, motherfucker."

Interpreting songs is a lot of fun. Especially the fact that everybody sees it differently. I actually recently started playing guitar and a look around on forums, many people have a lot of guitars. Often amazes me since you can only play one at a time. I currently have 2 guitars, an acoustic and an electric and that's it.... ok... maybe I'll buy one more this year... or next year...

I had a garage filled with 66 guitars
Each night I played them underneath the starry stars
There was much dancing and so many took offense
I never thought, I never thought, I never thought that it would end

But then one morning I saw one of them was gone
Just 65 guitars to play my happy songs
Then 64, then several more, to 17
I didn't know a demon stole them when I dreamed

A demon girl
A demon girl
Demon girl

The party's ending as my songs grew very dark
The guitars stolen rained a tear down on my spark
I blamed my druggie pals but suspects they increased
I blamed my plumber and I even blamed my priest

Demon girl

Tai Chung, my gardener said stay awake this night
Hide in the trash can 'cause there's something just ain't right
And then I saw her, she was from another world
A demon girl, so beautiful, a demon girl, a demon

A demon girl
A demon girl
She's a demon girl

I said please marry me and bring back my guitars
She said "I will, but first talk to my Devil Pa"
And after dinner he said, "Promise me, this night
You'll never let this demon girl out of your sight."
We had a happy home and parties that were wild
Had our own TV show and we even had a child
But then one morning I took up my fishing pole
And when I got back she had moved to Idaho

She was a demon girl
A demon girl
A demon girl
A demon girl
She was a demon girl
A demon girl

Chords: (got these from another post)
intro & bridge are C# + A , verses are E + A + F# + A

First of all this song is the bomb. I was listening to Christmass yesterday and this song grabbed me and wouldn't let go. I had to hear it over and over again....

I think the lyric goes... "There was much dancing and so many took offense", like he was making lots of noise and not everybody appreciated it. Maybe wrong here...

The ending of this song reminds me of the way "Brackish Boy" ends. She goes to Idaho and that's it. Many people would have added something a long the lines of... I had one guitar left and that's what I'm using to play this song or something... not Frank. The story is cool, funny, the ending is sudden, kinda irrelevant. Really he encourages you to make up an ending for yourself.

I also see a lot of meaning in the song....
First there's the fact that he has 66 guitars in his garage.... If you had 66 guitars would you keep them in your garage? So he has lots of gear, one guitar should be enough for anybody... I think the gear represents something else, maybe it really means his music and freedom, then this girl comes into his life and slowly he has to pay more and more attention to her and less to the things he wants to do. He starts neglecting the relationships with his friends, etc... But then again that's what I see and someone else probably sees it different.
The title of the song is Demon Girl, yet he sings it very happy.

Anyway, this song made my day yesterday. If anyone hasn't bought the album yet, I hope this song makes it on the podcast cause it needs to be shared with everybody. This song is AWESOME.

Anyone else notice a crazy meter tweak that occurs early in the song immediately preceding the chorus? It's like the verse is just finishing and then POW, the chorus hits, with no chance to breathe. It almost sounds like it could be a glitch, but knowing Frank's tendency toward skipping measures/parts of measures on whims, etc, I doubt it would be a glitch. Anyone?

I liked "Demon Girl" from the first time I heard it. It's very catchy, and the story told in the lyrics is kind of folk-tale-esque in a way, albeit with some modern and rock 'n' roll references.

"If you doze much longer, then life turns to dreaming. If you doze much longer, then dreams turn to nightmares."

Every once in a while I will have a dream where I own just about every guitar I've ever played in a music store, lots of Hondos, Ibanez Jems and Epiphone Telecasters.

Yes. The fishing pole/Idaho bit did well to remind me that lyrics are worth something, too.

I wondered if this was partly influenced by the time his gear was stolen on tour.

I posted this on another topic, but it's much better suited here:

Anyone else here think Demon Girl sounds like it could be Tenacious D song? Something about the lyrics, (tales of rock and roll vs. the underworld) acoustic guitars, I don't know, I can just hear Jack and Kyle singing it.

It's the one I listen too least, for now, but when I do it makes me smile. It could just be me, but Frank Black's vocals sound so happy, which is quite contagious.

Oh to have 66 guitars.

Probably my least favorite of the new songs. Which doesn't mean I don't like it.

I'm liking the bassline, aswell as the song itself. A happy little ditty. Fun!
