Saskatoon fan moves into Black's inner circle
Cam Fuller, The StarPhoenix Published: Tuesday, November 07, 2006
You think you're excited that legendary Pixies founder Frank Black is in town? Imagine how Dean Katsiris feels. The Saskatonian, an engineer by day, runs Black's official website www.frankblack.net.
"He's my version of the Beatles,'' Katsiris said Monday.
Katsiris went from being a fan to administering the website after submitting some articles and gradually doing more and more with the site, which had been based in Victoria, B.C.
The site unites fans from around the world. One from Virginia and another from France were planning to attend tonight's show in Saskatoon before having to back out at the last minute. Katsiris's New York-based podcasting co-host is in town, however.
Katsiris was turned on to Black by a friend in university after giving up on Top 40. "Back then I used to listen to mostly classical music. I kind of respected the guy so I thought I would give it a listen.'' As it happened, Katsiris was nonplussed at first. "It grew on me and I guess I fell in love with it. Next thing I know I'm maybe too much of a fan."
As a musician himself, Katsiris admires the originality and the complexity of the music. It's the kind of thing that, the more you listen, the more you hear. "They're rocky. They're complex. And, for me, I like the layers. Each time you listen you pick out something different."
Katsiris has met Black on occasion and says he's accessible and friendly. Black also submits posts to the website. He forgot his password once and started submitting under a new account.
"Nobody believed it was him, including me. We kind of made fools of ourselves," says Katsiris. "He had a lot of fun with it too, I think."
The website is running a backstageaccess contest for the show. Black is touring with his new album Fast Man Raider Man and a new band featuring Eric Drew Feldman (who played keyboards on the Pixies' Trompe Le Monde and who produced Black's self-titled solo debut and Teenager of the Year), and two "Nashville legends," Billy Block (drums) and Duane Jarvis (guitar).
"We're hoping to make this a landmark show on the tour,'' says Katsiris.
Need more Black? Katsiris recommends podcast episode nine at www.frankblack.net/podcast," target="_blank">http://www.frankblack.net/podcast, which was a fan-voted favourite.

Nah, he still helps out with the backend stuff but otherwise is too busy with his racing career to administer the site.

“Not since Orson Welles had one man so many fingers in so many pies, and been the chef as well. And then looked like he went and ate them all. The guy was out of control.” |

Believe it or not, I really thought one of my compatriots - someone more courageous than me - had flown to S'toon. I'm such a moron sometimes.
Oh and btw, nice article. I really like it.

Posted - 11/08/2006 : 07:45:33 Wow Deaner, making the papers. Impressive. What will do for Frank next? I would recommend jumping out of plane with a giant sign saying, "Frank Is Playing Here" then land yourself in the bowl at the University. That might draw a little attention. :)

Posted - 11/08/2006 : 07:30:10 It was all the more embarassing because when I was setting up on the bus with the band first Billy then Duane told me they had read "my article". And then later, after the show, Eric said this to me as well...
Oh well. I think it helped get people out/aware if nothing else...

Yeah, you were the fan from France, Frog. I told him you'd entered and won the contest and would've come except for the extreme cost/distance.
Also mentioned is SpeedyM who was that friend at university, and Brian, whom I refuse to admit is from New Jersey. :)

Posted - 11/07/2006 : 12:34:23 Yeah, I'm at best mildly embarassed - it was supposed to be about the show but I guess he went with the "local angle".
For the record, I never gave up on Top 40 because I never liked top 40.
A person wishes they could edit articles about themselves, but what can you do - at least the show got a mention in the paper, it was conspicuously absent in Regina. As were the fans, a pretty quiet show.
