Hey guys,

Just wanted to give you all some cool info on how you can submit your very own questions to the band. Boston Music Spotlight, a new professional online magazine, has a special feature called Readers’ Spotlight where readers can submit a question for their favorite artist and if time permits in the interview, they will ask it for you.

On Monday morning, Boston Music Spotlight will be interviewing Frank Black – so send in your questions, which can be about absolutely anything - (with name and hometown) to asktheband@bostonmusicspotlight.com.

Then before his show at Avalon, check back at www.BostonMusicSpotlight.com for the answers as well as a feature and review from the show in Boston.

Thanks

Thanks to everyone for sending their questions in for the Frank Black edition of Readers' Spotlight. We picked five of our favorite random questions by you, the readers, out of our mailbox and put them straight to the source. Here’s what he had to say:

1. What would be some advice that you would give musicians as they are starting up?
from Jesse C. in Colchester, VT

FB: "One's rock and roll dream is to be in the limelight. To be in front of people. It's all about your ego, whether you're the front man, playing on the side, or the drummer. You love being in front of people. That's why the only advice I ever give for new musicians is to get out there and play gigs. Play shows. Play anywhere you can as often as you can. You figure out alot just by doing that. So enjoy it. Don't worry about the music business stuff, until an opportunity presents itself. When that happens they'll put your name on a t-shirt. I love being on stage. It's all about your ego, whether you're the front man or playing on the side, you love being in front of people."

2. With the holidays quickly approaching what does Frank Black get his children for the holidays?
from Violet C. in Eugene, OR

FB: "I don't know, let's see. Probably books. You can never go wrong with books. Books and cute outfits, so we can dress them up in them. They look all cute and you get to take great pictures of them. That kind of thing, you know. It's nice for everyone. They enjoy it because they get to show how cute they are and it's great for the adults too. I just recently saw some pictures of the two little ones in their halloween costumes. Baby Lucy has this Native American outfit on that she has and Jack has some sort of full on Dinosaur body suit that he was wearing. They don't even know what Halloween is but he understands putting on a dinosaur outfit and looking cool."

3. What music are you into right now?
from Keira F in Jamaica Plain, MA

FB: "Wow, let's see. How about Gary Green. I believe he's retired from the music business. How about Cookie Gabrielle. This is all stuff I've been downloading off the Smithsonian Music Archives. Some of it is old field recordings, some stuff from some prison recordings, and some old rock and roll songs. I mean really old stuff. You know non top 40 music like ragtime and just a bunch of different music. There's alot of music out there, fortunately. There's so much stuff you missed and that was before your time that's really interesting and entertaining or whatever you wanna call it. That's the beauty of recorded music, you can rewind it and play it again. Magic in a box."

4. What's next for you and do you think the Pixies will be getting together to write some new music?
from Chris F. in Norwood, MA

FB: "In the Chinese zodiac, I am a snake. The snake slides around on it's belly, feels his way. He doesn't have alot of vision or preconceived notions about what he's doing. It's all gut feeling. The snake is slithery and he's sexy. He likes to travel and move around, he hates to stay in one place. He likes to look good. He's a smart clever creature, but not as smart as he thinks he is. That pretty much descibes me. I just move along and feel my way. I never know what's next until I'm doing it. It's all about the space time continuum. Where are you in relaton to me. Who's free to work with when you are free. I'm writing with Eric while on the tour and laying down some stuff. With the Pixies, everyone is always worried about us not living up to our legacy. Wo knows what will happen. I'm up for it. You wanna ring the bell. Noone wants to be lame. So you can't be worried about what you did in your previous work together. If you did their would never be a follow up record. If you suck, oh well, try again."

5. What's the best part of music for you. Is it your album work, touring, or just being a rock legend for so many other bands?
from Jerry B in Melrose, MA

FB: "I don't know. The greatest thing for me would be the possibility that one day I will be asked to represent rock musicians in space. I'll be some old guy and they'll say do you want to got to Mars and like head this big shidig they're having at this Harrah's on Mars city. I'll think it will be cool and they'll say we know you're old but it's only one song. That's what I'm holding out for."

There are several clear references to Boston and New England on the new album (Elijah, Seven Days, Holland Town). Did the Pixies reunion tour stir up some Boston memories, or do you attribute these references to some other (perhaps random) force?

How'd he lose all the extra lbs? Tell him he looks great! And please give him a hug and a squeeze from The New Bolero for me.

Haha! Very true. Lyle all the way.

I just got an email from someone who used to work at a deli with McDave who asked if the Catholics were playing in Philly. For a minute I got my hopes up that she knew something I didn't. :)

"Now you're officially my woman. Kudos. I can't say I don't envy you."

Catholics. Reunion. Any chance. Ever.

I've always wondered if he applies his own eyeliner. I'm guessing he does.

1) How does it feel to be REALLY CHARISMATIC as you are?

2) Do you feel bad about it?

3) Will you join the Super Cherries as piano player in Paris once in a while?

Thank you for the music.

++++

I'd just like to reiterate the Europe/UK question. Thank you.
cellar_door Posted - 10/10/2006 : 14:09:52
1) What acts have influenced the transition you've made with your sound. The country/rock/blues sound started in Pistolero and has now evolved to Fast Man/Raider man.

I'm asking because I really love the sound, and previously had no interest at all in that country/rock/blues groove he has going.

2) If you could change one thing about the media in the world of music, what would it be ?

I was a hawk and I just flew...yeah

You probably wouldn't ask this but I'd like to ask Frank if he has plans to tour Europe with his new band. I'm desperate to see him live again having seen the Pixies at Leeds and Manchester last year and on three occassions in 2004. I saw him with the Catholics at Leeds and Edinburgh in 2003 and they were great shows. Comeback Frank - England loves you!
