i don't get it. i think it is an awful, boring, stupid song. hateable horns & brass, boring and simple structure, absolutely no drive & ambition. the change to 5/4 doesn't make it more enjoyable.

please, would somebody explain it to me. why do you like it ?

I joined the cult of Souled American / 'cause they are a damn' fine band

It's probably my second-favourite song on the record. I love the feel of the song and Jon Tiven's production; and the trombone is great! It sounds a lot like a Randy Newman song, maybe something that could have been on 12 Songs.

If only Frank would ever do a Plastic Ono Band-record. Heck he could even get Ringo and Klaus Voormann to play on it! Lennon and Spector wouldn't be there of course, but he could pull it off with some other artist. Yeah minimalist FB records, they do exist on a technical level (FB and the C's first one), but not yet musically

There is some kind of minimalism in that song that tou can find in many other songs on FMRM. It's cool and fresh to see Frank going that way (the opposite of "Freedom rock" for example that sounds more like a complicated pop puzzle) but I guess it's not fully followed by Tiven's production, exept for the fact there are no more guitar solos on these sessions (VERY good thing). Maybe one day will come a REAL minimalist album, like John Lennon's Plastic Ono Band. I'm sure it would fit perfectly with Frank's new moods.

The catholics played with Frank for money (of course), but they really meant it.

Trombone is neat. Baritone Sax is great too. Especially when played by tall men in capes.

I don't think every song has to be on some kind of mission to be relevant either. Pop songs are derivative, that's the way it is. They can still be good. Complete orginality is tough to come by, but you can still do something very well within a genre and it can entertain and sometimes still influence.

I think some of the songs on FMRM were just session songs from the master musicians, but I also think that by the end they were inspired and had a good time working with a great artist such as Frank Black. I wonder if they look back on the sessions now and wish they had invested more of themselves into it.

Jon Tiven mentioned that FMRM may be the "Exile on Main Street" of our generation. I don't think so, but maybe it could have been. I think too many of the musicians played it as just another job. To be another "Exile" they needed to really mean it.

I wish every song on the album could be as playful as Dog Sleep. I can safely say I can sit back and thoroughly enjoy every one of Frank Black's songs, (as I do with the rest of FMRM) but Dog Sleep is the song I just HAVE to turn up a little more, and it invariably makes me smile just hearing it. Few songs have that effect on me. And compared to the rest of the songs on FMRM, it's easily the most porous and textured, giving you so many things to listen to at once, without having to struggle. It's wonderfully arranged and performed with as much discipline as you can have with a song so loose and laid back. I can't imagine how one single trombone can ruin it for some people. I like it when Frank goes in prolific directioins with his songs, or when they're introspective or unbelievably moody (all of which he does very well), but I don't think every song has to be on some sort of mission. But to each his own, of course. I'm assuming this is one of the songs he wrote on his baritone ukelele (especially since it's featured heavily on the song).

The weird thing about Frank's music is that with FMRM it's a type of music I would never listen to, and didn't used to like, yet I like it now.

I really like the song as well. I don't understand how people can listen to this song and then claim that Frank Black no longer makes weird or quirky music.

Can't say I like the music so much -- those horns are obnoxious -- but the lyrics are fantastic. I like all songs that mention horse meat.

One of my favoutites too. I think "fun with hints of darkness, then dark with hints of fun" sums it up pretty well. I like the horns & brass.

Oh come on! the whole song is brilliant! I love it when the drums comes in along with the brass arrangements at the beginning. And the different parts are really good, and fit together just like a musical kaleidoscope.

I don't like the end of the song but the middle part is brilliant.

There are much worse songs on the album IMO (for instance the one just before and the one just after it). I like brass and I love the intro and the last part (esp. Lyle's solo).

It starts off quite promising but the second half isn't very inspired. It's a skipper for sure.

I'm with Mr. Goodman. It's fun with hints of darkness, then dark with hints of fun.
