Posted - 03/09/2006 : 00:13:31 <<Frank Black Fashions Double Album March 08, 2006, 6:20 PM ET Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.
As tipped here last October, Frank Black has wrapped work on a new solo album. The double-disc "Fastman/Raiderman" will arrive June 20 via Back Porch/EMI and is the follow-up to 2005's country-tinged "Honeycomb," which debuted at No. 11 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart.
In the fall, Black told Billboard.com with a chuckle that he was mulling whether to release "a lean and mean record with 11 songs on it, or a self-indulgent opus with everything." The latter approach has won out on the 27-song effort, which was produced by "Honeycomb" knob-twiddler Jon Tiven.
Among the musicians that lent a hand on "Fastman/Raiderman" were Steve Cropper, Spooner Oldham, the Band's Levon Helm, Bad Company's Simon Kirke, Cheap Trick's Tom Petersson, Al Kooper and Rich Gilbert, a member of Black's one-time solo band, the Catholics. Tracks confirmed to appear include "My Terrible Ways," "Elijah," "In the Time of My Ruin," "Sad Man's Song," "Fitzgerald" and "Kiss My Ring."
Black didn't tour in support of "Honeycomb," but is planning to hit the road at some point this year behind the new effort. "Now that there's a second record with different people, I could find some alt-country guys," he said. "A lot of the 'Honeycomb' guys have expressed interest in going on tour, but half the time they're flying around with Neil Young!"
In addition, the Pixies are gearing up to play a handful of shows this summer, details of which will be announced imminently. >>
Rich Gilbert? Didn't they confuse him with Lyle? Also, great news about a possible tour.
