FRANK BLACK BACK IN THE STUDIO FOR "HONEYCOMB" FOLLOW UP

Following the critical success of this past summer's album "Honeycomb" (Back
Porch/EMI) - which Rolling tone called "a mind-blowing collection of tasty,
laid-back tunes" - Pixies' front man Frank Black has returned to the studio
rejoining producer Jon Tiven and some of the legendary musicians who helped
him make "Honeycomb."

Black, "Honeycomb" returnees Steve Cropper, Reggie Young, Spooner Oldham,
Anton Fig, Chester Thompson, and David Hood, were joined by Levon Helm, Al
Kooper, Ian McLagan, Cheap Trick's Tom Peterson, Simon Kirke from Bad
Company, Lyle Workman, Marty Brown and Jack Clement - just to name a few -
to record some twenty-five new songs, most of them Frank Black originals.
The sessions took place in Nashville, first in October of last year, and
most recently last month when Black was in Nashville for the Americana
Awards. Still untitled, no release date has been set, but the new
collection should be finished and available in 2006.

According to producer Tiven, "The new tunes are much different in many ways
than those on 'Honeycomb.' 'Honeycomb' was subdued, almost mellow, whereas
more up tempo, rock tracks were recorded this time." The subject matter on
the new album is also different from that on "Honeycomb's" 14 tracks. While
"Honeycomb" dealt with recent autobiographical topics, on the new album,
Black explores many different areas of his life including his early days in
Massachusetts. "Until we decide how many and what tracks will make it onto
the new album," Tiven added," "we won't know for sure what the musical
direction will be. But it's going to be great."

Pixies' brand-new DVD, "Pixies Sell Out" (Rhino Home Video) was released
last week and is now in-stores; the band will tour Japan in December. No
word on a new Pixies album.

Al Kooper lends a hand to Frank Black
By Carol Beggy & Mark Shanahan, Globe Staff | October 14, 2005

Sideman extraordinaire Al Kooper is staying busy. The Somerville resident is just back from Nashville, where he played organ on Frank Black's new disc, the follow-up to ''Honeycomb." ''The producer [Jon Tiven] called me and asked if I'd come down," said Kooper. ''I don't remember much about [Black's] songs except they were bizarre." In addition to Kooper, Black also enlisted session aces Steve Cropper, Spooner Oldham, David Hood, the Band's Levon Helm, and Buddy Miller. The former Pixie has said his ''Nashville" period was inspired in part by ''Blonde on Blonde," by Bob Dylan, which Kooper also played on. ''It's probably my crowning achievement," said Al. And what did he make of Mr. Black? ''I'm sort of disappointed -- I never even met him," he said.

I can't edit the front page, that's solely something Mr. Noisy can do. I'll send him another reminder...

Thanks Cheese, I coupled that with a few other nuggets gleamed from elsewhere (nothing that should really be new to any of our forum readers) for the news item.

Oh, nevermind. I just reread it and it looks like it is a combination of the Sicilian Session and a new one last month.

Is the session discussed the all niter Sicilian Session that has been mentioned before or is this another session altogether?

Was Workman on Honeycomb? Glad to see he is in this list.

I am also glad to hear that this one is gonna be more rockin. And hopefully some more of those classic cryptic lyrics.

Very exciting.
