Posted - 04/25/2005 : 09:01:39 Someone's selling another promo copy of Honeycomb on ebay, and this time there's a picture of the CD cover:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=1057&item=4722582009&rd=1
Who knows if it's the official artwork or just something they did for the promo CDs. If it's the actual artwork, the forumers who chosed the colours for the new forum design were spot on...

Yeah, I'm hoping it's not (as far as cover art goes, not really an issue in the grand scheme..) looks a little 'naff' to be official. Very unoriginal
i've changed my mind. it's a nice front cover. |

Maggie's painting is amazing as the original!! Wow these kids have so much talent!!

Shit, Guitar Man, are you kidding me, of course I'll have her ready. I will have to get my second son, Taylor Hyatt (son of the late singer/songwriter Walter Hyatt from Spartanburg-Austin-Nashville) to teach her lead. [http://pbs.org/klru/austin/artists/program111.html]
P.S. I'm gonna check with the Duke of Fender about getting Taylor some lessons from the Duke!!! He's got a good teacher now and a lot of his daddy's talent, but he needs some of the Duke's magic and flair!

And what is it with blues, yellows and black? They go so well together. Children are so smart.

And, as I was looking at Maggie's art from this week, I couldn't believe the similarity between her "Stary Night" and Julian, Miss Thing and The Man's 7 year-old son, cover for "I Burn Today"...I had to post it.
Also, you're right, those blues, yellows and blacks really go well together. |

Posted - 06/17/2005 : 22:25:58 Alright, Miss Thing, it's my turn to do a little braggin', this painting is by my 8 year-old daughter, Maggie, and it is her interpretation of Vincent van Gogh's "Stary Night" painted while in an art camp conducted by Mrs. CoffeeCan during the week beginning June 13, 2005.
Maggie's "Stary Night" [original by Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890)]

Posted - 06/15/2005 : 01:00:33 I would never have thought it was done by a seven year old. it's a lovely cover, and because it's on an fb record, you just presume it was done by an artist/designer.
Go Julian!
I look forward to seeing some more of your work in the future. The boy got talent. |

Hi Everyone- This has been a strange but oddly thrilling experience, reading what people think about my work, especially before I posted my first response. It's too bad that some people don't think it does justice to songs on the album (fbc) or that it looks like "fossilized tortilla chips" (floop), but everyone has a different aesthetic and a very personal response to the album, so that's okay. So, to answer the burning question on everyone's mind: the font is American Typewriter. As for why Frank chose this particular cover, you'll have to ask him, I can only speak to what I was thinking when I made it and don't want to put words in his mouth. The whole idea behind the abstract nature of the cover has to do with trying to translate how the album sounds (how it sounds to me, anyway) into a purely visual language. I didn't want to use recognizable symbols (like a beehive or something) because I wanted that visual language to be unique to the album. I feel like the music says something uniquely individual, and I wanted the cover art to reflect this by using only color and texture. I chose the warm colors b/c, to me, they invoke a bunch of important aspects of the album: where is was recorded, the type of musicians that play on it, the overall sound of the music, and the lyrics. Okay, so that was my attempt at articulating the ideas behind the cover. I sort of hate doing this because you just can't avoid sounding pretentious when trying to explain artwork, and pretentious people are lame. Thanks for all the feedback on the cover, it's given me a lot to chew on...
I have to admit that I do like this artwork and also that I hated it at first. as an artist, music lover and FB fan I have had only my personal visualization of a cover/theme, graphic or font in my head when I thought of this new work. I haven't sought out the bootlegs or whatever but I read jon tivens' updates and the recent news and was happy that it's almost here and for some reason I do picture a completly different package in my head. as I wandered into this thread I immediately clicked the ebay link saw it and recocgnized the american typewriter font immediately (I sign write/paint and old school is to learn your fonts)and thought the background a close up of a brown paper bag (which it may be) so I thought it was a quick mock up for promo. as i browsed the ebay page it grew on me and what the bogey man says makes sense so I'll buy it. but honestly the simple aesthetic works. |
