To get the most out of this year's Pixies comeback, caterwauling frontman Black Francis presents this double-CD set. The first disc is comprised of engaging and rare solo demos Black recorded before any Pixies records were released. Portable tape player hiss intact, the disc captures a thrilling raw portrait of Black, though its sound quality is better suited to fans of primitive technology. More intriguing is the second disc, a session recorded in the summer of 2003 with trumpeter Andy Diagram and guitarist Keith Moline. Together, the trio reinvent "Where Is My Mind?" "Nimrod's Son" and "Wave Of Mutilation" into synth-filled, brass loving, space alien jazz, while retaining the gritty, quirky heart of Black's originals. And as revered as those originals are, Black's fearless experimentation manages to expand his planet of sound in surprisingly fresh ways. -Brian Wong
