i really hope someone has nabbed these - they're fucking great.

i cannot get the hearitagain ones, but i have listened to the samples, and martin's recordings sound as good, if not better than them - and they're complete which is a huge plus.

cook me some fucking eggs!

Yes, totally. If Frank is ok with taping and tape trading then I don't see the problem. The above griping just sounds like sour grapes to me because Martin doesn't want to mp3 it! I also know Martin from the Sugar mailing list and can confirm that he's a good trader.

For anyone interested: I have one spare copy of each show (11/26 and 11/28) because a trade fell through. Shoot me a mail at rappard[at]dds[dot]nl if you'd like to trade.

Check http://www.firstpr.com.au/audiocomp/lossless/ - there are tons of lossless audio codecs around.

It's weird..i can oftentimes get 40-50% compression with RAR..and it's lossless as well.
jbstevens Posted - 12/12/2003 : 02:24:54
The 'problem' with mp3 is that in order to get the file size down, you lose some of the information. The human ear can hear freqencies from around 20Hz to 20kHz, and a CD played over good quality louspeakers will convey those frequencies. The highest frequencies only really affect the very finest detail of the sound, and so these are the ones that are lost in mp3's. Listening over a pair of in-the-ear headphones, you probably wouldn't notice any difference, but I don't think you need to be a complete audiophile to hear the difference over hi-fi speakers.

It's a bit like taking a digital image that's 1000x1000 pixels, reducing it to 750x750. The overall picture is the same, but you've lost the fine detail. This is a picture equivalent of an mp3.

Now imagine you want to display the picture at the orginal size - you enlarge the reduced image to 1000x1000, but can't recover the original information, so now you have a 1000x1000 image that lacks fine detail. This is a picture equivalent of an audio CD made from an mp3.

Now imagine someone wants a copy of your picture. You use the picture mp3 format to trade, so you reduce your reduced-enlarged 1000x1000 picture, and reduce it to 750x750, losing more information.

... and so on.

Basically, if people make audio CD's from mp3s, then use that audio CD to make some mp3s, which later get used to make an audio CD, that later gets used to make some mp3s.... every generation gets worse and worse in quality.

Traders have no way of knowing whether mp3s may have been through this process many generations, and so as a rule just don't accept them at all.

And if you try to fool them with an audio CD that has been made from mp3s, they often have a little piece of software that tells them straight away if the high frequencies are missing - i.e. that the CD was cut from mp3s

Personally, I wish it were possible to get hold of the hearitagain.net recordings on CD. Maybe hearitagain could charge an extra 50% for a .SHN download (.SHN files are -slightly- compressed, only about 20% smaller than the original, but in a lossless fashion)

That would be a long explanation - but basically I don't want to pollute the "trading pool" with non-lossless formats, I want people to hear the original recording (warts and all).

Mp3s are fine by me (hell, I have my entire record collection as a backup in mp3 form), but I want people to know they're getting the original recording when they trade for it, not a chopped-up form.

just out of interest, why dont you want them around in mp3 form? i dont mean to prod and/or pry, or suchlike. obviously they are your recordings and down to you what you do with them.

Thanks for benji and csmall09 for sticking up for me - all the other self-righteous c***s can f*** off. My recording is meant as an ADDITION to the HearItAgain recording, not a replacement (did I ever imply it was?).

Last time I ever offer a b+p on this board. Didn't you ever think that people on slow connections might prefer a b+p over downloading from HearItAgain?

Learn to read, and don't take the moral high ground if you clearly know zilch about the subject at hand (i.e. trading).

Martin

geez....
don't you guys think you're being a little harsh on the man!
all he did was offer his recordings for trade/B+P.

seeing as the hearitagain recordings are not easily and readily available to everyone (me for example) and that audience recordings can sound better and give u more of a feel for a concert than desk recordings and that hearitagain have edited the shows they release previously, i for one am taking downtothewell.com up on his offer and I think it's fucking nice of him offer.

persoanlly knowing that martin is a top-notch taper and trader i have no hesitation in getting my hands on his recording, but even if i could get the "official recordings" i still would want to hear martins tape.
and the amazing advantage the "unoffical recording" has for me, personally, is that it's on a cd seeing as downloading mp3's in a no-go.
billgoodman Posted - 11/29/2003 : 12:31:45
I just thought of that it's very illegal
illegal as hell I'll would say
because Hearitagain.net recorded the amsterdam show (as far as I know)
so that means you'll be robbing frank in a way
so let's not put it on the FTP
and well what downtothewell.com wants to do with his recordings is his case
but let's not trade with him

I'm cool with bootlegging shows (frank is cool with it too) but not if there are official recordings of those shows
