I got home from practice at about 10 pm and decided I'd go down and see this show despite my waning interest in Frank's recent music. It turned out to be okay. I got there to see the band before Grand Duchy called The Shys. They looked pretty fashionable and the stage was crowned with a lighted sign ala The Strokes or The Vines with their name all big in case you got confused as to who you were watching. They seemed to have a sort of following and people seemed to be digging them. My impression? Meh...

After a prolonged set up period Violet and Frank came out with the rest of the band and went through their set. I have the Grand Duchy record so I was familiar with some of it. The drummer is damn good. Violet was playing a Steinberger(?) bass. I haven't seen those since seeing Night Ranger on MTV in 1986! They all seemed to be having a great time playing. They were a lot of electroclash crunchy hair-do'd ironic tie wearers in the place. Not really my thing. A far cry from the days of the Catholics whom I'm pretty damn partial to. I don't wanna seem negative but I guess there's only one direction you can go from the top notch level of a live Catholics show.

Anyway, I'm glad I got a chance to see them in such a small venue. Frank in OC doesn't happen very often.
