Solo show? Somehow the concept of "dinner seating" and Frank's Rollins-esque approach doesn't jibe in my mind.

i have to say, i've seen a lot of Frank Black shows and this was one of the best. i can't remember the last time i heard Frank sounding so on for every single fucking song. it didn't just sound as good as the album, it sounded better than the album. he truly gave Los Angeles a treat

sometimes LA crowds can be lame at shows - acting all blase and too cool to get into it - but this was a great crowd. people were going crazy. i could tell by conversations around me that everyone was really appreciating it.

celebrity sightings: i saw Eric Drew Feldman and Jack Black. i guess PJ Harvey was there. now that i think about it maybe i did see her but maybe not. check this out though.. an FB show makes perezhilton.com (not that i read perezhilton) http://perezhilton.com/?p=7255

i think the awesomeness of the show was a combination of it being the last show of the tour and Frank being back in Los Angeles and having lots of friends in the crowd (just my personal theroy). the show i saw in Santa Barbara last week was good, but didn't hold a candle to this one. not every show gives you the chills, like this one did for me.

Frank had some good audience banter between songs (not too much, not too little).. introducing most of the songs.. he introduced The Water saying it was about his dad (didn't know that).. he said "this next song is about my father" and someone yelled a request for Freedom Rock and he joked, "no, Freedom Rock was not written about my father, but good guess".. and went on to say his dad didn't really like music except for a few people, and how he used to be the maitre d at Dan Tana's in West Hollywood (which i've read before).. and how he tried to go get a drink there before the show but there was a huge line and he couldn't get in (despite his "ancient connections", or something) so he ended up drinking at a "shitty bar" down the street.

when he introduced Tight Black Rubber he told the audience that some people think it's a "sexy song" but it's not about sex etc.. and then he said that when he was younger he bought a cock ring but used it the wrong way or something (he didn't go into the details) but it was fucking hilarious. then when he introduced Moterway To Roswell he was joking that he was writing about Roswell before all these Roswell tv shows and stuff. he was like, "i fucking invented aliens!".. and then said that there were probably a lot of budding screenwriters in the audience and "we should talk" because he had some big ideas.. it was a crack up

before the show he walked in through the front door with Eric Drew Feldman. in Santa Barbara he did the same thing, and he walked right by my girlfriend and bumped into her (i was walking up with a beer - too late) and said excuse me and gave her a friendly smile. last night the same thing happened again. my girlfriend asked him for a pic and he was cool enough to oblige us. i wanted one too of course, but didn't want to trouble him since he was on his way to play the show and all..

one interesting thing: when i saw him in Santa Barbara he stopped playing during The Water when he was singing "she knifed that stupid sailor" and started pondering how it was an odd lyric to sing and he should have written it better or something. he was trying to think of a better way to sing it and Skippy suggested "cut" that supid sailor.

last night when he played The Water he actually changed the lyric and sang "cut" instead of knifed.

the man, always perfecting himself..

anyway, i can't get over how absolutely fucking great the show was. i hope some bootlegs appear.

can't wait till he tours again

Black Francis @ Safari Sams - 10/16/07

On the last night of a short west coast tour to promote his ridiculously great new record Bluefinger, (review
here) Charles Thompson the Third aka Frank Black aka Black Francis hit Safari Sam’s last night with a
blistering hour-plus set comprised of the entire Bluefinger “rock opera”, and just a very few extra songs
thrown in for good measure.

The set was loose and blissfully raw. Like any good maestro, Black was talkative, and spoke at length
about nearly every song – constantly referring to his new record as a rock opera, and repeatedly singing the
praises of his current muse Herman Brood.

The man credited with perfecting “loudquietloud” these days usually works with either one or the other.
Thankfully, tonight was ecstatically LOUD. Reclaiming his Pixies moniker for the first time in well over a
decade, Black seems positively rejuvenated, and his joy is infectious.

Stripped down to a power-trio including Dan Schmid on bass and Jason Carter on drums, the band is tight,
but powerful. (Frank’s wife Violet left the tour last week after realizing that being pregnant and touring with a
rock band are concepts that are diametrically opposed.) I think this is the first time I’ve seen Black handle
lead guitar duties with a full band, and you have to wonder why he doesn’t take the reins more often.

Any other artist, performing the new album in its entirety, and throwing in only a couple other songs would
be a disappointment, but in this case, the evening is perfect. Earlier performances of the tour saw Black
shunning guitar entirely, or beginning the shows with a 20 minute acoustic set. Other shows featured as
many as half a dozen additional songs, most of them obscure Pixies tracks, but tonight is all about the
new record. The new songs are as vital and raw as anything in Black’s career, and the audience response
proves it.

Clearly without a setlist, the band plows its way through half the new record – beginning with the fantastic
“Lolita”, and bringing it down with a song about Brood’s suicide “Angels Come To Comfort You.” Black
introduced “Tight Black Rubber” as a song about alcohol and speed that’s commonly misconstrued as a
song about sex. Before kicking into the guitar intro, he talked about buying a cock ring when he was
younger and using it incorrectly.

The “Intermission/Cigarette Break” highlights Pixies standard “Cactus” and recent outtake “Get Away Oil”.

The band flies through the rest of the new album, breaking out a couple of newer Frank Black tunes (“The
Water” and “Gyaneshar”), before finishing with a couple of rarely played Pixies songs, “Motorway To
Roswell”, and a slow, almost unrecognizable “Break My Body”.

One of the new records b-sides is a song called “Polly’s Into Me”. In my head, I like to think that the song’s
about PJ Harvey, and though he didn’t play the song tonight, I took sheer satisfaction from the fact that PJ
was standing near me for much of the evening. (swoon) I also saw Jack Black, but didn’t get quite the rush
from the sighting. (review of PJ Harvey's show last night here)

Black is arguably looking into his past – taking his old name and yelping and howling his way through
songs that sound like they were written by a man half his age – the truth is, Black is a songwriter who’s
always had a foot firmly entrenched in the future. As long as he continues to write and perform with the
reckless abandon he exhibited tonight, he will always remain a vital, relevant artist.

Los Angeles Times - Black Francis' Dutch tribute.

Pasted up here. Gonna start pasting up these short 'gig-preview' interviews here as well as big, 'proper' interviews.

You Set the Scene (scroll down).

Black Francis / Eastern Conference Champions @ Safari Sam’s
($20) – Charles Thompson released his first solo album as Black
Francis presumably to take advantage of the renewed interest in the
Pixies. I’ve seen him with the Pixies and I’ve seen him as Frank Black.
He’s usually pretty good.

Rock with Black Francis for FREE Tonight

Charles Thompson hasn't recorded an album with the Pixies since
1991's Trompe le Monde, despite years of rumors. But Thompson,
who led the trailblazing indie quartet under the pseudonym Black
Francis (originally suggested by his father), recorded roughly one
album per year since the Pixies' 1993 break up as Frank Black.

This summer he put a cap on Frank Black with the 32-track 93-03
compilation. And now, Black Francis is back. Touring behind the
edgy, electrified Bluefinger, Black Francis wants to see you and
he wants to see you TONIGHT. We'll leave the rest to Sam:

The first 50 people who come to Safari Sam's for Mr. Black
Francis will get in for free*. Just say Sam invited you or print
this out. *(Must be over 21 and arrive by 9:30pm).

I'm driving up from San Diego for the show on the 16th. What do y'all know about recording shows at Safari Sam's (minidisc)? Does Safari Sam's fondle people as they enter like House of Blues does?

i'm thinking i might check out the Saturday show in Santa Barbara. a little field trip. plus, then i can get blazing drunk and get kicked out of the club, which is my favorite way to enjoy a show.

weeknight concerts kind of suck balls in my opinion

Hi Eric,

It will be Black Francis with full band. There will not be dinner seating directly in front of the stage - it will be to both sides and on the upstairs mezzanine.

Thanks!

anazgnos Posted - 09/07/2007 : 16:58:25
Looked up Ding's myspace and he's got shows through 10/13 with his band...wouldn't necessarily preclude the LA shows, but would for SF, so I'm guessing it's unlikely he's involved...so that might be a strike against these being band shows.

Nothing on Jason's myspace, or the Guards of Metropolis site that would indicate scheduling conflicts, or confirm or deny their involvement one way or another...
Nate in the PDX Posted - 09/07/2007 : 14:22:20
There was dinner seating at the show in the Salem, OR, pizza joint, but the floor in front of the stage was open (nobody sitting or standing there before the show or during the opening act). When Charles took the stage, I led the charge down to the front and spent the show right down there. It was a weird setup, but it sure worked. Here's hoping Safari Sam's does something similar or allows for some furniture rearrangement as needed.

I'm just gonna email the venue and see if they know/will say anything on the seating/band issues.
DrBone Posted - 09/07/2007 : 11:20:26
Safari Sam's has booths on either side of the floor. Hopefully the "limited seating" is refering to those seats, as opposed to setting up tables on the floor area. Also, one would think that this would be a band show. It's his first L.A. gig after releasing a loud and intense record and he's been talking a lot lately about performing without a guitar, so let us hope that this is the case.
BLT Posted - 09/07/2007 : 11:13:17
We must move their tables.

Knob head.
floop Posted - 09/07/2007 : 11:09:02
it sounds like Safari Sams (ive never been) will have tables set up. my hope is that they'll at least be off to the side or on a balcony (like at Houst Of Blues) and not directly in front, so you have people sitting at tables front and center, then people standing around them. it makes for an awkward show dynamic
