fbc, why haven't you upped this for me yet? I thought we had an understanding.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm plenty grateful to have it. My point was that you don't want to risk damaging the sound even more.

mis rezos fueron escuchados!!

Muchas gracias!!
benji Posted - 06/27/2007 : 09:50:48
yeah, not the best sounding recording.
hopefully the other source will be a ripper.
but seeing as it's, so far, the only recording from the tour, i love it!!

all i can say, thank god for polio! brian
rodney Posted - 06/27/2007 : 07:18:32
It's not a particularly great sounding recording, so stripping more layers of sound by converting to mp3 probably isn't the best idea.

The band sounds REALLY sloppy in places. Not a very good performance by any means.

See link in the post above for the gallery.

Between 1999 and 2003 I saw Frank Black performing like ten times, I really loved his gigs with The Catholics, couldn't get enough of it. Even the Pixies reunion I found a major success. But what I saw in Lille Friday was definitely the poorest performance ever.

First the positive notes: I really liked the cool stage attitude, the backing vocals were very ok and some of the new songs came out well in this stage possession: three musicians and one singer kicking ass, some "punk" versions of old songs - Thalassocracy / Freedom Rock / Ten Percenter - sounded great as well.

Don't get me wrong: Frank Black's band was ok in general, but it all sounded so limited - probably normal in a way because there was only drums, bass and one guitar - and often slobby in comparison with the Catholic gigs, I guess it's not easy to replace extremely talented musicians like Scott Boutier and Rich Gilbert.

Some songs which really didn't do it for me at all: a "tame" Robert Onion, a raped Calfornia Bound, a hasty Old Black Downing, an uninspired Manitoba and with this version of Black Rider they really reached the rock bottom line.

So for me this gig was definitely long enough, I wasn't eager to hear some more encores.

Maybe it will get better when Joey Santiago joins the band, does anyone know when exactly?

And know: criticize me and show me that I'm wrong

ps: I bought some earplugs, but I didn't wear them

We were at the concert, and we were rather disappointed, because of the length of the show (1 hour 15 minutes what is that ??), the poor balance of the sound (guitar way too loud, FB's voice sometimes barely audible), no encore, and not the least contact with the public from the entire band. So YES we were disappointed, quite mad at FB who made much greater shows in the past, we really hope it will be better in two weeks in Rock dans tous ses etats festival. One good point however for the musicians who had a drink with the audience after the show !

jedi, yep, I have to check, annotate, approve them and then rebuild the gallery before they show up. I'll do it in the next few hours. Thanks.

And I agree, that is an absolutely cracking shot.

Ding has played bass with The Fall and PJ Harvey.

Llama, I've done some uploading last night but the pics never appeared in the gallery. Is this normal? The mystery deepens.

Thanks everybody for the nice words.

Indeed; thanks a mil for all these great pics guys!!

Jedi, this is the coolest rock photo I have ever seen, bar none. This beats the cover on Abbey Road, this beats naked John crawling on Yoko, this beats young AND old Elvis. If you e-mail me the highest-resolution version of this pic that you've got, I will send you the next child born to me. Fucking brilliant.

OK thanks for that.
I think I have seen Ding live playing bass for PJ Harvey. Would that be him?
He was very good.

Jason Carter was the drummer, but bass was played by Dan Schmid.
1965 Posted - 06/24/2007 : 16:42:29
I have lost my notes...
Are Jason Carter (drums) & Ding Archer (bass) the same guys that recorded on Bluefinger?
Charles Normal was not on Bluefinger as Black played all the guitars. Is that right?

Looks like a great show and tour by the way ~ lucky people!
I will unfortunately have to wait till 2023 for the Australian Tour version...

I think it was disabled for security reasons

Go here - Lille Gallery

unfortunately you'll have to upload them individually. Maybe get the best ones up first, then any more at your leisure.

cheers, guys.

That's a fabulous interview! It's interesting hearing how the various members got to know FB, and Charles Normal talking about how he'd been expecting FB to be playing guitar too (if I read that correctly?).
