I've been lurking for a little while. Since no one else has reported on the Pittsburgh show, and I was there, I thought I'd join and offer up my report.
First off, Mr. Smalls sounded terrible. The place used to be a massive church. The band plays where the pulpit used to be. And the audience stands where all the pews used to be (naturally). And as with big old churchs, there is a very high ceiling. I think the high ceiling and exposed concrete resulted in the poor sound. Basically the sound was very muddy. Few of the instruments could be heard clearly.
I'm actually not a hardcore Frank Black fan. I loved the Pixies when they were around the first time. And I loved Frank's first two solo albums. Then I kind of dropped off until "Show Me Your Tears". So I know the early stuff and the recent stuff, but not much of the middle. I've been gradually getting the middle albums, but I still don't the songs very well. Consequently, there were quite a few songs I didn't know. So, getting that out of the way, on with the show...
Frank came out and did his acoustic set. Judging from the other shows, it was shorter than usual. He started with "Holiday Song", then "Los Angeles", then a song I can't remember (I think "California Bound"), then "Velouria", then "The Water" (where does this song come from?).
Then the band came out. Frank sort of talked to himself a bit while they got up on stage, then said something like "Okay shut the fuck up Charles and play some music". He played these songs - among others: "Bullet", "Six-Sixty Six", "My Terrible Ways", "Livin On Soul" (where is this song from?), "Raider Man" (Great!), "Johnny Barleycorn" (again, incredible!), "I'll Be Blue", "Dead Man's Curve", "That Burnt Out Rock N Roll" (he announced that it was a cover), "All Around the World", "Horrible Day", "My Life In Storage", "I Burn Today", "Ten Percenters", "I'm Not Dead (I'm In Pittsburgh)" "Nadine", and "Sing For Joy". There were more, but I didn't know them. Prior to the Pittsburgh song, he said something like "this is the first time I get to play this song here and we're not even IN Pittsburgh! Who booked this fuckin' tour? We're on the other side of the river for chrissake! What is this place? A church? (Eric nodded). No, seriously this is a great place". The location of the show was actually Millvale, a rundown little borough on the other side of the river, just like Frank said.
Overall, the Pixies songs at the beginning, and "Los Angeles" got the biggest crowd response. In the electric set, "Ten Percenters" got the biggest response, followed by "Johnny Barleycorn". It didn't seem like people knew the song, but in the arrangement played last night it really rocked and almost sounded like a lost Pixies song. Regardless of audience response, Frank delivered everything with an equal amount of intensity.
I was disappointed he didn't play "Headache" at the Pittsburgh show. I generally know better than to expect an artist to perform certain songs. Frank could play all Pixies and early solo stuff and the crowds would go wild the entire time. He was clearly playing by his own rules which is cool by me. I had no illusions that I'd be hearing "Abstract Plain". Just seeing Frank live was an experience. I had to explain to my wife why he is important, and so did half of the rest of the audience who brought their girlfriends and wives.
Aside from the crappy sound, the show was brilliant.

I tried to talk some friends from my former residence to go, but i doubt they will. Damn shame, as that's a cool little venue too.
