Good news for Philthadelphia folks. World Cafe is probably the nicest venue of its size, at least that I've been to.

Already jazzed about seeing Frank for the first time since 1996!

Hindu seer gunned down in India

A Hindu religious leader and seven of his followers have been shot dead in northern India, say police.

A convoy of cars carrying Swami Sant Gyaneshwar was ambushed near the city of Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh state.

The seer was killed instantly. It was not immediately known who carried out the attack.

Media reports in India say Gyaneshwar was wanted in connection with 16 criminal cases, including the murders of three local officials.

He was returning to his ashram near the Hindu holy city of Varanasi late on Friday when the attack took place.

"The killers used sophisticated weapons, including an AK-47, in the operation," said police spokesman Surendra Srivastava in Lucknow, capital of Uttar Pradesh state.

"The attack was so sudden that the seer and his disciples were taken by surprise," he was quoted by the Associated Press as saying.

Five people were injured in the attack and taken to hospital near Allahabad. Three were said to be in a serious condition.

Mr Srivastava said police would question people living near the scene of the shooting, as well as residents of Gyaneshwar's ashram.

A senior state official was quoted by the Press Trust of India as saying Gyaneshwar had been wanted in connection with the killing of a district magistrate, a regional politician and a local government official.

Gyandev. More on him on the net, but I wonder what the songs content is about and why
frnk chose to write about him for a possible new Pixies song.

...actually I asked about how to PRONOUNCE Gyaneshwar (anyone out there know?). The Gyaneshwar of whom I sing was gunned down earlier this year in India. I take it that some have taken to calling themselves after the Hindi of the 13th century.

Do you know the approximate size of the crowd? Just curious, and sorry if I missed it in another post. Thanks for all the great reviews of the show...very exciting.

I'd rather be anywhere or doing anything

I made it there too. Great show, I was blown away... somehow I ended up front & center. At some point Frank sprayed me with a bit of saliva and/or sweat. Normally I wouldn’t have enjoyed that but it was Frank so I was kinda flattered. I was even able to grab a setlist.

The band was great. Since it’s already mentioned several times, I think we can agree that Billy Block is the happiest drummer on the planet. This was the first time I had seen Eric Drew Feldman live, he was intense as hell. And Duane Jarvis was great too. He really shined more on the country-esque tunes but I think he handled the rock stuff well too. He really went nuts on “I Burn Today”, which is one of my personal favorites.

Aside from I Burn Today, my personal highlights were Living On Soul, Johnny Barleycorn, Sing For Joy & I’d have to say Mr. Grieves just because it was so damn unexpected. Thank God Duane took a long time to retune.

I agree that the solo acoustic set was a phenomenal idea. It’s like he was the opening act for himself. I thought we’d hear a tune or two but he did eight songs, that’s a good chunk of material.

Frank was quite chatty... I can’t remember what the hell story it was but I loved when he ended it with, “Just F.Y.I. Or is that T.M.I.?” That was great. He’s come a long way from his usual song-song-song-song format.

Reid Paley was great too, I had never seen him live before. It was cool to hear both him & Frank perform “Pittsburgh.”

My wife was able to snap a few pictures which I'll post soon.

I went to this show last night and I really enjoyed it. Not only is the World Cafe an excellent venue but this was one of the best Frank Black shows I've seen. I saw him 3 times with the Catholics and twice with the Pixies. I must say that Gyaneshwar has an absolute pixie sound to it and if it is one of the new pixie demo songs that he wrote then he nailed it. I also have to say my new favorite FB song is Dead Man's Curve. I am obsessed with the solo Cafe Du Nord version but hearing the full band play it really rocked.

I met Billy Block and Reid Paley. I talked to him about his yet to be released third album that I've been waiting for.

Sadly I didn't meet any forum members. I did meet other fb.net members at the Catholics show he last played in Philly in 2003 and at the Pixies show in Atlantic City last year. I suppose I should have posted that I was going to be there, but I guess I am a shy poster. I've been on this forum since the beginning I just don't post much or often.

That's my review. It was awesome.

Great show.

I'm no musician, but I do know the band sounded really good. Someone already posted about the huge smile on the the drummer's (Billy Block? sp?) face. Every time I looked at him he seemed to be having a great time. I guess playing with FB will do that...

I avoided looking at other setlists before the show (both to be surprised and to avoid the disappointment of waiting for a song you think is coming but doesn't...). I didn't expect the mini solo set before the band came out. And thinking about it, that is pure genius...load some Pixies stuff up at the beginning, satisfy that contingent of the audience, and you don't have to put up with people yelling "Where Is My Mind!!" during the rest of the set. Great idea.

[An aside...there were numerous "silent times" after the applause died down between songs. I wanted to yell out "Western Star" or "Massif Centrale", but I couldn't bring myself to be "The Guy Who Yells Out Requests Between Songs". Then again, I've seen where that has worked in the past with FB, it would have been worth it if it had worked...]

Here's the setlist with I Gotta Move and Raider Man in the right spots...

solo acoustic
1 Los Angeles
2 Cactus
3 Where Is My Mind?
4 Water Song
5 California Bound
6 Wave of Mutilation
7 I Gotta Move
8 Brackish Boy

Band comes out
9 Nadine
10 Ten Percenter
11 Horrible Day
12 Living On Soul
13 All My Ghosts
14 My Terrible Ways
15 Bullet
16 I Burn Today
17 I'm Not Dead (I'm In Pittsburgh)
18 Do What You Want Gyeneshwar
19 Raider Man
20 Suffering
21 Mr. Grieves (solo)
22 That Burnt Out Rock and Roll
23 All Around the World
24 Johnny Barleycorn
25 Six-Sixty-Six
26 Dead Man's Curve
27 I'll Be Blue
encore
28 Sing For Joy

For those with an obsession for statistics, that works out like this:

Pixies 4
Frank Black 3
TOTY 0 (shocking...)
COR 0
FB&TC 4
Pistolero 0 (dang, i love this album)
DIS 2
BLD 1
DW 0
SMYT 2
HON 2
FMRM 4
OMRFTH 1
OTHER 5

Personal Highlight: Suffering. By far. This is my favorite FB song (by a nose over Superabound and many others). In my time as a music fan there are only 2 songs that always make me clench my teeth when i hear them, they are so intense. One is Suffering, the other is the ending of Pink Floyd's "Dogs" (Who was born in a house full of pain...). Suffering was awesome last night.

Other highlights: Brackish Boy, Ten Percenter, I Gotta Move, Living on Soul, My Terrible Ways and of course Sing For Joy. Before Brackish Boy he told a story about a sketchy roommate he used to have in Puerto Rico (I think...). He was a nice guy but never told the truth and the only thing he said that Frank ever really believed was the Brackish Boy story. FB was very talkative (playful??), he was goofing around during the solo set making hammed-up facial expressions while strumming certain chords, joking about how all his songs end dramatically in minor chords...

He played Mr Grieves solo while waiting for Duane Jarvis to fix his guitar up. Then they did "one we've never played before", which I guess is called That Burnt Out Rock & Roll. That Gyaneshwar song rocks.

OK, 1 more show left this year (Chicago, Nov 1). Frank, that gives you 12 days to teach the band Western Star or Massif Centrale. I'll take either. I'll also have one helping of Storage, please. And while I'm at it, shit, gimme some Pan American Highway too! Thanks!

A newbie, kfs. There's been a few mentioned in that Mog blog, but I never expected them to be played live.

What a treat.

Saw "That Burnt Out Rock & Roll" on the setlist.
What's that?
Pete Egress Posted - 10/20/2006 : 06:23:10
Yeah--he did Mr Grieves solo while the guitarist was tuning up. Seemed improptu.

Gotta Move was acoustic solo. He hinted to the audience hat there was a Philly connection to the song---which was the reference to David Lynch/Radiator Song/Eraserhead. (Lynch was from Philly?).

Raiderman seemed like it was toward the front end of the full band set.
Made a joke about being asked about the line "All my life I;ve been diggin black Polish Hole"
Which of coarse he had to explain that it was Coal and not Hole---funny.

yes--And EDF reminded me of one of my college History Profs. :) Very Quirky guy.
In contrast--the drummer looked like he was having a really great time! He had a big genuine smile plastered on his face the whole show--which was kind of endearing actually.

It felt like the NEW Frank Black--looked like he slimmed down a bit--and had a happy healthy glow about him. Parenthood kinda strips away that cynical air I suppose.

Mr. Grieves? Really?
kingphilbert Posted - 10/20/2006 : 05:25:41
I'm hoping I got them all on the acoustic set, but I did get to snap a shot of the setlist with the band. For the most part as follows:

Acoustic Solo
--
Los Angeles
Cactus
Where is My Mind?
The Water
California Bound
Wave of Mutilation
Brackish Boy

With Band
--
Nadine
10 Percenter
Horrible Day
Living on Soul
All My Ghosts
My Terrible Ways
Bullet
I Burn Today
I'm Not Dead (I'm in Pittsburgh)
Do What You Want Gyaneshwar
Suffering
Mr. Grieves
That Burnt Out Rock and Roll
All Around teh World
Johnny Barleycorn
666
Dead Man's Curve
I'll Be Blue
Sing For Joy

They did play Raiderman, I'm just not sure were it was. I can't rem if he di I Gotta Move in the solo set or not.

Awesome show! Yeah! I've never seen Frank without the Pixies, and what a great initiation! Old songs, new songs, accoustic songs, electric songs, loud songs, soft songs... Highlights for me were "Six Sixty-Six," "Nadine," and "Johnny Barleycorn." Someone should have given EDF some smelling salts or something, though. Haha.

Just got back--fantastic show!

He did several Pixies songs and took us on a nice balanced tour through the entire FB catalog.
I really enjoyed the dialogue he had with the audience--dont remeber him doing that much in the past--but was a nice touch. He seemed to really be enjoying himself as was the crowd.
He played several new songs including Dead Mans Curve--the "Hindi" titled one and at least 2 others I hadnt heard before (Water?" and another)

Reid Paley was GREAT as well--though the room was only a quarter full during his set. Hopefully he didnt take it personally.

Anyone who's going tonight, I hope you're excited as I am!?! I haven;t seen him since Dog in the Sand (minus the Pixies) when he played at some tiny little pub under the giant hot dog near the Zoo.

The place has a restaurant and there's gonna be some wine tasting at 6. Although, I

recommend Fumé on top of Abyssinia at 44th & Locust in Westphalia. The Reid Paley Trio

is scheduled to play at 7:30. I think frnk blck will start solo around 8:30 with a few Pixies

songs (to conciliate the people who aren't happy with just his post-pixies tour-de-force)

and then the band should join him at 9ish. In a perfect world they would play a 4 hr

minimum show, but you could always go to the Brooklyn show Friday, the DC show on

Sunday, and then at the Irving Plaza on Monday. I just saw him in Baltimore last night

(fucking incredible) and today in Philly will be the 6th time I've seen him this year. So far,

August 30, 2006 - Santa Cruz, CA, The Catalyst; August 31, 2006 - Sacramento, CA,

Harlow's Night Club; September 9, 2006 - Olympia, WA, The Clipper; September 16, 2006

- Salem, OR, Guitar Castle (early show) - Baltimore, MD, Sonar

wow...who's going to this show? doors? show time? i'll find that stuff out myself...

any good establishments for a beer and maybe a bite nearby the venue? i'm about 1 hour away near A.C.

cant wait. my only hope is that he plays for at least 4 hours...:)

Illustrating the article with a Catholics pic is kinda weird. And it makes me sad cause I hoped he'd tour Europe in the automn. Oh well.
