Posted - 07/21/2006 : 14:55:45 I'm going to the Omaha show on Aug. 26, and would like to record the show. Does anyone know of a device I can use to get a decent recording for under, say, a hundred bucks? And does Frank discourage this sort of thing? It's certainly only to share with other kindly folks who have been sharing their own recordings on the Forum. Any thoughts?

Posted - 10/15/2006 : 20:39:32 NS - I know jack about recording but given how little time you have had to prepare, I'd suggest erring on the side of less volume. My listening experience, from dime boots, is that sometimes the levels are too hot, so if you don't know what's gonna go down with your recording, err on the side of less volume. If it turns out too low, we listeners can always turn it up a little, whereas if you're too loud, you may overload this or that and thereby impact the quality. That's the limit of my advice. Hopefully somebody more knowledgeable will also respond. In lieu of that, thank you.

Posted - 10/15/2006 : 17:34:18 If everything goes as planned, I should be recording tomorrow's show in Atlanta. Unfortunately, the microphone I ordered nearly a month ago from Sound Professionals hasn't even been shipped yet (and I paid $10.00 for shipping!), so I might have to settle for the built-in mic on my Archos Gmini. In everyone else's experience, will that sound at least decent? It's really not very noisy at all for a built-in mic. I guess I don't really have any other options, so hopefully it will turn out good and I'll be able to post it on Dime for everyone.
I've also contemplated filming the show, but I plan on standing right in front of the stage and don't know how I would conceal the camera. Does anyone have any tips?

I took your advice and picked up a Nomad Jukebox III on eBay (and a small stereo condenser mic) so if I can get it into HOB in November, we'll see if I can get us another show. I'll have to play around with it first and get used to it. Too bad I didn't have it a few weeks ago. I saw Cat Power and would have really liked to get her set in my computer.

Shoot. I originally read that as "pro(fessional)-taping", as in SBDs of these performances. Now I realize what you meant. Shucks.

Posted - 08/02/2006 : 09:27:11 For SLC, I contacted the venue beforehand, explained the FB sanction, and asked. I made it jokey, by saying I was asking for a friend (since I was gonna record it no matter what). They got back to me and said "if he don't mind, we don't mind." You might try that if you're concerned.

EDIT: Looks like there's a good Buy-It-Now on eBay right now.

Posted - 07/21/2006 : 19:53:39 They may be, but most venues just have a no taping policy in the first place. I've never been frisked or searched here, although I guess they were looking for cameras at the Pixies gig, but some venues are more uptight than others...

Posted - 07/21/2006 : 16:20:15 I wonder if the venues are aware of Frank's pro-taping stance. I mean, if during pat down they find it, and freak out, then you are F'ed. My Sony MD recorder cost about $300. I doubt I would throw it in the trash to get in to the show.
Yeah, I would. Nevermind. |

Posted - 07/21/2006 : 15:26:13 FB has posted on the forum (under the name frankus blackus) that he is alright with taping so long as you:
a) Aren't getting in others' way/interfering/bothering anyone. b) Send his brother a copy.
While I doubt many know how or send Errol copies of the show, sharing them online here means he can get at them if he wants. So go for it. As for equipment, mini-disc players supposedly can work pretty well if you have a decent mic.
