I was there too, but I sure don't remember the set list. Wish I did. I do remember that Two Reelers was the encore song and he finished the main set with Six Sixty Six

Yeah, I remember him joking about that in the Slims concert, too...

AAARGH my brain is frazzled, he played "Cactus" not Silver, I don't know why I listed that.

Are you sure he played "Silver"? If I recall, the Pixies haven't even played that on their reunion tours. And I can't see him even bothering without Kim or some sort of backup singer...

i was there - as were spudboy and apl.

i'm sure i was a hit - i tried to buy spud's parents shots of Knob Creek. good to see you guys again!

Glacial, i was the partially bearded guy in black tshirt and the old, ratty (read: vintage) blue Martin Guitars trucker hat.

it was a fun show. loved Abstract Plane and all the old stuff.

when he took the stage the roar from the crowd rattled the place.
he wore all black and tuned his guitar by ear.

one fun thing - after the "rode the El Nino" line in Wave, he stops and says "i was was talkin about El Nino ten years before anybody else was!" and the crowd just roared.

we hung out off stage right most of the night so we kind of saw him from the side.

he still has it.
he can scream and sing and whine like ever.

Hey glacial! Thanks for the review and setlist. I didn't go but I'm now going to the Nashville show so all is well. Glad you had a good time. Why don't you have FMRM yet?
Ziggy Posted - 08/14/2006 : 02:40:54
Wow.

My bad, I meant "Frank Black Francis." fbc got me thinking of Honeycomb.

Glad ya had a good time, Glacial! It is interesting that Frank is doing Pixies songs on this tour, considering that the band is still touring, and he has a lot of Nashville material!

Yeah, it was pretty down-tempo. Not near as down-tempo as the version off of Honeycomb though. To me, the vocals in that version sound very despondent and depressed, kind of like "Something in the Way" by Nirvana. I'd say, if I have to estimate, that the version played at the show was about half as fast as the original, if you can imagine that. Also, Frank's vocals were subdued for the main part of the song, and, it being acoustic, it really exemplified his scream when he hit the end. Very cool.

You've scratched my itch, Glacial. Was 'The Holiday Song' played with a slower tempo, à la mellow Honeycomb?
glacial906 Posted - 08/13/2006 : 12:39:43
I made it to the show! My first FB gig to date, hopefully not my last. Sorry you didn't get to go, kfs, or did you? Here is a short review:

First off, Joe Manning opening was great and I really enjoyed it. I gotta admit that his is not really my style of music, but it was a different experience and it was good. He is a very talented guy, what with playing to be Dillan up there playing harmonica at the same time as playing acoustic. (Aside from the fact that I don't play any instruments, I'd be way too one-track-minded for that...)

It turned out to be a great show, Frank played a lot of tracks from previous albums (not having bought FMRM, there were only three songs I didn't know the words to...) A lot of old Pixies material too, even "Holiday Song" off of Come on Pilgrim. (Wierd hearing the "mature" Frank singing that song; his voice has really come a long way!) I didn't know going into it, but it was just Frank, no back-up band or nothing. It made it a very cool performance that way, the man really knows how to tear up an acoustic guitar, backup band or not.

The only negative things were not really the show's fault; there was a marathon race going on when we got there which made it impossible to find parking as a lot of the streets were closed off. And there was a marked lack of parking as well; it seems as though the city decided that, to spite the fact that they were having two rather large events going on there that night, they would close off some pay parking lots nonetheless. We ended up having to park illegally at the Hyatt lot, and kept our fingers crossed that the car didn't get towed! (It didn't.)

And, I didn't get to meet anyone from the forum that attended either. It's a stupid thing, but once I got there I'm like, "Okay, how the hell am I supposed to know these people when I see them?" (As far as I know apl4eris and SpudBoy and KimStanleyRobinson were supposed to be there..?) I would've liked to meet you guys!

Anyway, all in all, a very enjoyable show and hopefully it won't be too long until I see Frank again.

Another show today! It's fun to hear about these shows from those who attended. I've only been here about a year so I haven't really gotten to do this before. It's cool!

Be sure and tell us all about it if you go, glacial. I can't convince Mr kfs to accompany me so I asked my Mom (not an FB fan-yet-but she's a good sport. Know what she said? "Didn't you see Frank Black last year?" Some people just don't understand!
glacial906 Posted - 08/04/2006 : 21:30:49
Looks like I'm going to this show. It's about three hours away from where I live. But, seeing as how the FB show in TN is only open to UK residents (that's just ludicrous...) it looks like the closest I can hope for.

Is Lynchberg miles away, too? Sorry, kfs, i'm a little naive to your States, I bet Tennessee is way bigger than I imagine.

And If I can be bothered to enter the comp, and I won, we're so there ;)
kfs Posted - 07/31/2006 : 13:31:39
fbc, that's so nice of you to point this out to me. Again, so close and yet so far.... Hey, if you win the drawing, can I be your guest?
fbc Posted - 07/31/2006 : 10:41:11
He's (hopefully) playing the distillery in Lynchburg on 6th October as part of Jack Daniel's Birthday celebrations, kfs, but tickets may be hard to come by.

Since it doesn't look like THE MAN's coming to Nashville anytime soon, this looks like the closest show for me. Unfortunately, I'm having a hard time convincing Mr. kfs to drive the 300 or so miles. So close but so far!
