Though I saw one of the best Catholic shows (Beachland Ballroom in 2003, with Jack Kidney on the sax) I think overall, the 2001 tour was their best, based on the long sets. In subsequent tours they seemed to not be as loose. The 2003 tour was good but man, in 2001 they were really cookin'. Long shows, more given to improvise and a greater variety of songs.

Maybe they were just burned out a bit by that last tour.

C'est tout.

It's a cool setlist. 2001 was indeed a fantastic tour, the Catholics used to play Fu Manchu and Everytime I Go Around Here a couple of times. I was lucky enough to attend one of these shows.

I remember him opening with 'Into the White' at his solo show in London, 2003. A fine evening.

Wow, some great sets. I'ts devastasting that I didn't get to see them.

The first show I saw them was in '01, when they came on to All the Tired Horses and then ripped into Nimrod's Son. Hearing a Pixies song live for the first time was...wow. It was incredibly intense, the whole show was, with its long set, totally amazing. I really enjoy when bands stretch out on songs and there seemed to be more of that in 01 than any other tour. I own a Madison show from right before DOG came out but later concerts completely blow it away.

Anyway, I'm fortunate I saw them when I had the chance.

This was my first Catholics show, and looking back at the setlist I'd give almost anything to get back to that night.
My memory is somewhat blurred, but I do remember the slowed down chorus of Ten Percenter which sounded great, the little bass line solo during 'I Switched You' catching part of the crowd out, and me being in awe at the sight of the man. How fluid his playing was/is.

5/24/99 live in london, LA2

1 all my ghosts (joined in progress)
2 the holiday song
3 man of steel
4 so hard to make things out
5 you're such a wire
6 headache
7 dont ya rile em
8 superabound
9 I switched you
10 I gotta move
11 calistan
12 steak n sabre
13 wave of mutilation
14 abstract plain
15 I need peace
16 ten percenter
17 dog gone
18 kicked in the taco
19 western star
20 so. bay

My first show was Reno, June '99, the one that stands out. Pre-converted, yes, but the next step demanded standing before the man. "I'll Be Blue" was debuted that night. Strange to think of Gilbert as the new guy.

Best show ever was at The Mint in LA in 2001...

And to think, I've never seen Frank with The Catholics. Well, with some of the original members, before they converted to Catholicism! ;)

In '01 I remember hearing Oddballs and Jumping Beans, even Dancing the Manta Ray, whereas in 2003 the setlists seemed more set (opening with Where is My Mind and going into Bullet, etc.). They were still good shows, though but 2001 was the year to catch 'em. It'd be nice if there was a live retrospective from their career.

Anyway, I wonder what the FM/RM band will be like, but I suppose that's another topic.

ciao

'01 was a great year, saw 'em three times. They played plenty from DW, too. Fields of Marigold, Velvety, were played almost every night.

But I saw them on their final tour and they still kicked butt, so I couldn't vote one year over the other.

I was lucky enough to catch them in both 01 and 03. 01 was a defining moment because it was the first time i had seen them and dits was still playing around on my cd player. 2001 was probably more enjoyable because of the venue and because of the excitement and because of the pistolero songs. 2003 wasnt bad either! started off with velvety, jane qol, all my ghosts, goodbye lorraine...either way...01 had where is my mind, mr grieves. 03 had velouria, monkey, gouge. Cant argue!

Agree. I think that was their best tour as far as performances, set lists and the like. The addition of Dave Phillips was great. I think I saw 4 shows or something like that.

I'm not a big fan of double albums or double releases. Just too much product to absorb at once. So, on the subsequent DW/BLD tour, there just seemed to be too much going on. You know?
