Seeing as i'm new around here, just wondered what everyone rated as their best moment at a Frank Black gig? Mine was on the Dog in the Sand tour at the London Astoria a few years back and it was my first ever gig.... My two vivid memories of it were him starting with Hermaphroditos (well cool) before later playing a song i'd never heard before that sent the crowd mental. The song being 'Los Angeles',and it completely rocked! I remember realising at that point just how awesome Frank Black was... Any one else's? Apologies if this has been discussed in the past but i'm too lazy to check... |

Dec. 1994 St Pete FL, FB solo opening for TMBGiants.
Frank plays about 11 songs that night in about 25 minutes. 2-3 times in the set Frank grabs another guitar, slides the one he just played to the side and puts the next one on and plays that. By the end of the set Frank has 3-4 guitars on him with at least one an acoustic he used for Duke Of Earl. During the set he also kept looking at his wristwatch very animated, I took it as him joking around to see if his time was up for this very short set. After his set my wife noticed The Man heading to the bar that was seperate from the venue
so we followed and said hello and a handshake. |

(sorry in advance) too many fave moments:
1st solo tour, 1993, pearl street, northampton mass: I stood with pal Helder outside hours earlier and watched FB rehearse. the show that night was 1 big slamdance. was neato!
opening for tmbgs, 199?, smith college, also northampton: fb slung all his guitars over himself. then tmbgs led the entire venue in a conga line. was really neato!
sometime in s. california... pamona maybe? dave lovering opened with magic show. then the catholic's drummer couldn't make it so dave filled in. holy f*%&ing rock fest. and pixies songs. i drank to that.
playing with r. zimmerman, mccabe's, santa monica, ca: they had a song-duel thing going on. 2 songs at once. funny as hell. was really really neato!
opening for gordon gano, troubadour, l.a.: during gano's set, fb came out and did "run" with him, screaming and rolling all over the floor in a pool of sweat. floop probably got wet. uber neato!
not weeks later again at pearl street, 2002: again with Helder, really drunk, blabbing with stoned dave lovering and those bennies guys. Helder in a drunken stupor gets up on stage and knocks fb's amp over. Helder is a rock star at last. super uber neato!
pixies show at landgraff music fest, the netherlands, 2004: so psyched to see pixies again. drove across e. europe from macedonia with fellow peace corps chums just for the event. raining on everybody and drinking watery heinekin. very angry germans pissing on everyone's tents. rock and roll. was. the. best. show. ever. |

The Vicar St. SMYT's gig caused a very big argument in our house. My other half made the fatal mistake of saying it could've been better and I threw a strop...in hindsight I could see where she was coming from as she's been with me at every gig since solo in Sunstroke...perhaps the minor cock-ups on drums that night or just the fact that the Catholics were minus one had something to do with it, or that the crowd at that stage were shouting a little too much for Pixies tunes. Still a great gig, but not quite the best in my book. |

of the 5 times ive seen frank...
It has to be the vicar street gig supporting SMYT...
The whole gig was amazing...
Think it was that gig that they came out played "Dirty old town" and then walked off (as if it was the end), only to come back and play an amazing set, best gig ive ever been to. |

Carl, we're you outside the Temple Bar (solo) gig when he strolled in the front door wearing THE shirt and carrying his guitar...he did change shirts by the time he got to the bar after the show mind you, suppose he had to as that was a LONG and sweaty one...the bouncers were going nuts at the number of encores that night, not to mention the dodgey late night act that "were" scheduled to play :)

At the Catholics show in Solona Beach at the Belly Up Tavern 2003, I have to say Frank ripped it up. I've heard about the "statuesque" Frank, but he didn't show up that night. Where is my mind was great, and Horrible Day made the set list months before Show Me Your Tears came out, and I instantly remembered it from the show when I bought the album. Also, after the show the whole band came down to the side of the stage and BSed with us for awhile. I shook Frank's hand and got the whole band's autograph on Devil's Workshop. I missed the first couple songs of the set, but a friend of mine who was meeting me there and was completly unfamiliar with anything Frank Black, had showed up about and hour and a half before the show. He sat at the bar with Frank for about an hour and never even knew who the hell he was next to. That night Frank was wearing that funky cowboy shirt from this site's homepage. |

I didn't try to give a demo to him. He actually asked what the tape was in my hand and I said it was my bands demo and he asked to see it. When he looked at it he remarked about the name and gave it to Dave who then put it on the table beside Frank. I wasn't about to ask for it back. I brought it into the club to ask if our cd could be played prior to the show? I never had the chance to ask because I never got the demo back! We were in the club about six hours before the show started.

It would have to be from 2001 tour stop in Montreal....Dave Philips pops a string on the first song and Frank improvises while they wait for him to re-string it....Frank basically goes, 'bla-bla-bla-bla-bla-bla' for about 30 seconds to the opening distortion of The Marsist....its kinda neat.

Syracuse New York for the first Catholics album. Ended up meeting Frank and McDave and having the opportunity to give Frank a copy of my band's demo. Very cool and exciting. He actually commented that he liked the name of the band. Realized that I can actually become "star-struck". I have met people that include the PM of Canada, Bill Murray, Wayne Gretzky to name a few and felt nothing in the way of nervousness. Met Frank Black and completely ceased up inside!? Very strange feeling for me.

Not to derail, the thread, but why is that ? I've always thought Montreal was so much better :)
Wow you're hardcore, 3 pixies shows in 3 days.
I did really enjoy the music in Ottawa though. They structured the show so differently, the order in which they played almost the same tracks created a different vibe. |

I was at the Ottawa show, too, and I share your opinion. There was hardly any moshing in Ottawa, and the Montreal crowd was so fucking rowdy and ready and dressed to the nines. That said, I would move to Ottawa in a heartbeat.

Then Frank comes out, with a BIG ASS Silver belt buckle, black jeans black shirt, and starts saying that over and over. Holy chills. I'd never seen him open a show anything like that.
4) Pixies in Montreal, Umass. Frank belted it out so hard, people crowd surfing all over, it was mental.
3)Ottawa show (Cult of Ray tour), Freedom Rock. Sweet lord even the people who I brought to the show who didn't know FB lost it.
2) Ottawa, I love your brain. I'm just dying to hear him play this live again, I've yet to see that kind of energy duplicated at a FB show.
1) Still with the catholics on the tour they started experimenting with the slide. Both Rich and the younger guitarists whose name eludes me both have slide guitars. They do a slide version of this monkey's gone to heaven. I'd do anything to have a copy of that.

Yeah at that 2003 Camden show, he stopped 'Horrible Day' to berate the drunks down the front. "You probably know the songs better than I do". Which got a cheer or two! And then he returned to the song later in the set. |

And during the same tour in le feu Bikini in Toulouse (i don't want to lose...) Low by Bowie was being played and the Catholics came on stage during Warsawa... A bit surrealistic!

It got pretty rough, but I was immovable, to the point where the crush of the crowd forced my right arm up on the stage. My moment wasn't at a gig, but right before one. Frank was doing an in-store at the Tower Records in Philadelphia in November of 2002 before playing the Theater of Living Arts that night. I was in a rush to get there, and just as me and my girlfriend passed by the TLA on South Street, Frank walked out. He crossed the street and started walking two feet in front of us with his guitar slung across his back. He was by himself and all the way to Tower Records I was tempted to stop him and ask for a picture, but figured I'd get one later, which I did. He got to Tower early, and sat down with the fans. After looking around a bit he said, "Well I'm going next store to get a drink." When he came back to play he was quite buzzed.

Me too, same show (Oct 2003) - specifically when they played 'Caribou'. First Frank show I'd seen, therefore the first time I'd ever heard a Pixies song played live by the man. You couldn't have wiped the smile off my face for anything.
Also, two months later, Shepherd's Bush Empire, London - Six-Sixty-Six rocked my socks off.
