April 24th 1996 - Portland, OR, La Luna

I have the recording of this Frank Black show (no Catholics yet) and something ugly happens about half way. I can't remember which song he was playing but he stops, the band stops, someone shouts 'That fucking guy!' and it sound like the man and band leave the stage. Audience starts clapping and shouting for him and he eventually comes back and says something like: 'I do apologise sir for grabbing you by the scruff of your shirt, I've never done anything like that before'.

What the hell happened? Could someone who was at the show (I trust there must be someone in this forum) enlighten me?

Well, his mother might... his father passed away some time back.

Yeah...he lives somewhere in the Pearl district, right? Not only that...but I hear his parents live here too. Somebody told me they were at the concert...but I never spotted anybody who I thought were them.

Well, FB can't hate Portland too much, now that he lives there...

Yeah...I was at that Portland 2002 show too. FB handled it so well...I had completely forgotten about it until you brought it up. Must say...things like that give Portlanders a bad name.

I saw a show in 2002 in Portland and some idiot threw a glass on stage whizzed by Frank and shattered on an amp. Seems like a great place to avoid playing a show to me. I don't understand what goes through someone's mind to make them throw/spit/heckle. If you don't like it, leave. Or, wreck it for everyone who loves it. Whichever.

Yeah, that was quite some showmanship to come back considering that he also had the heart to play an encore.

I remember reading a review of a show somewhere where The Man got spat right in the face by some drunk fuck. I hope that the real fans got 'intimately' with his face after the show, preferably with the help of some boots.

Roughly:

Someone jumped on stage and was beginning the harassment of Chuck. McDave throws down his bass and as the guy completely hampers Chuckie from playing, Chuck grabs him and moves him toward the edge and McDave takes the guy off and gets him onto the floor where he proceeds to teach the guy a short lesson before FB helps get Dave and the dude separated and while the two people on 'security' attempt to get through the crowd to the front. The man is sufficiently subdued by the rest of the crowd, and the band leaves the stage. They cool for about 10 mins, and, though no one in their right mind should expect them to come back on, they come back on and launch right back into their set.

I bet FB doesn't miss things like that when it comes to bigger vs small 'intimate' venues.
