Just wondering if I'll be the only one there, standing in the middle of a cornfield with 8,000 undergrads trying to be cool. Will I sing alone? Is there anybody else out there driving four hours just for an hour and a half of cathartic screaming? I "moshed" when it used to be called "slamming," and now I get one last shot at it...

Anyway, just thought I'd start a conversation among excited 36 year-olds like me.

I can't wait.

They did seem like they were getting along well, but I thought we got kind of ripped on the audience interaction thing.

The first real conversation they had was when they screwed up on the intro to Is She Weird. Kim tried to blame it on Joe, and Mr. Black tried to blame it on himself, saying "What album is that from? The Charles goes crazy record!" as he makes a circular "crazy" motion with this finger around his ear. Personally I thought it was Kim's fault because I think nobody knew what she was playing. I thought it was Gouge Away for a little bit, then I had no clue. Either way, it was a classic moment.

The only other interaction I remember is Kim asking if we saw them at the Luna "like 15 years ago."

I agree that the show started off slow. I really was hoping for something rocking to open the show. Granted, that opening drum/guitar combo of Winterlong is a nice show starter, but it's one of their slower, prettier songs. Somewhere around the middle of the show, they caught fire.

I never realized how much Subbacultcha freakin' rocks until seeing it performed live. Tame was amazing, just pure aggression, as was Something Against You. And you know you're always in for a treat from Joey when Vamos rolls around. His neo-Hendrix magic tricks were nothing short of amazing, and it was great to see Frank sit down in front of Joe's drums and just strum those two chords, shaking his head back and forth while Joe took the spotlight.

You're right, the tempo really picked up halfway through. The intro to Something Against You nearly ruptured my nads.
Lame-o's for sure. Some guy in front of me left during Wave of Mutilation and I thought "You got to be kidding".
Here's proof that life is not fair. The kid/usher was talking to his buddy and said that he had never heard of the Pixies. He heard them practicing earlier and said that they sounded "pretty good". Then he says he was helping them set stuff up earlier and also ate lunch with them.

Fantastic show! Disclaimer: I still prefer Frank solo and the Catholics and they're still a better live band but... This show was outta this world. So cool to see Kim and Frank smiling and joking with each other. The vibes between all were very good. It's clear they are not going away (permanently) anytime soon. Started slow and ended with a bang. Frank really got into about halfway through as did the rest of the band as did me as I used the mosh pit to my advantage to move up a dozen rows from Kim's side of the stage to first row in front of the man himself. There were some real lame-o's in the crowd (some idiot in front of me kept looking around him and talking on his cell phone as one of the greatest rock bands in the world gave one of the greatest performances), but some people were really into it as well. Enough to where the band couldn't even leave the stage at the end the roar was so deafening. They never left, then did the encore. Incredible stuff.

Okay, guys. What did you think of the show? I thought it was fantastic. There was more there than undergrads. I would say from age 15 to 55. Once the show started anyway, who cares. It was unbelievable. It was cool to watch and hear so many people singing along to practically every single song.

Now to see Frank & the Catholics and my life will be complete.

Honestly, you're probably screwed either way. The bypass is just as congested as the regular highways and even that won't get you around St. Charles where the real backups on 70 and 40 occur. Depending on where you're coming from in Illinois, I think I would take 270 West (which is the bypass) to 370 West, which will come out at 70 West. You'll probably still be tied up in a little bit of traffic on 70, but it won't be for too long.
Tariq Posted - 09/29/2004 : 10:18:36
st. louis question:

should I try to shoot through town during rush hour from Illinois? Or should I take the bypass expressway way the hell around the city?

I'll be driving through around 5pm...

If I lived in Columbia I'd definitely do it, but the idea of driving up from St. Louis and driving back isn't all that exciting. The upshot of that is, I've got 2 floor tickets if anyone's interested.

Pretty sure it's "the thrills." They're described at length in another topic heading. Tariq

I'm going...anybody know the opening act(s)?

I saw on Stellastarr's website that they opened for the Pixies on some European dates this summer, and I'd be thrilled if they opened for them in Columbia. Stellastarr also opened some for The Stooges this year...lucky bastards...but they're a great band and they deserve it.

Carbondale, huh? Used to frequent the used record shops there ten or more years ago when I lived an hour away. Now I'm further away in Greenville, IL. I kinda missed the boat when the tickets went on sale -- love the pixies but frank solo is my preference and wasn't so sure I would want to see him so far away in a big arena after years of standing at his feet...guess I changed my mind, but only if I can find a decent ticket.
Tariq Posted - 09/24/2004 : 07:41:56
There are some tickets left, but they are high in the arena. I'm not sure how easy it would be to get onto the (general admission) floor once you're there, but it might be possible. Otherwise, you'd have to stay in your seat up top. Doesn't sound like much fun to me.

I'm driving from Carbondale, Illinois. Nashville is just as close, but Columbia was the first show near here to pop up, so I bought tickets right away.

It will take me about 90 minutes to get there. I've already passed 36 and I'm real excited about it, too. Less than two weeks now.

Bartholomew Posted - 09/23/2004 : 13:13:40
I would be there if I could get a ticket that is. I've posted elsewhere in my ticket interest. Where are you driving from, Tariq? My drive time would be somewhere near yours 2 1/2 - 3 hours maybe. It sucks there's no St. Louis show. I wonder too about the amount of college scenester kiddies (28 myself)...
