Posted - 09/19/2004 : 22:05:29 They open for the Pixies a lot this fall, including the show I'm going to October 6th.
The easiest way to find out about a band is usually to visit their website. Taking a gamble, I try www.thethrills.com and sure enough, there's a band's website.
I listened to some samples, but then I look at the tour dates, and none of them match up to the Pixies shows.
So is there another band called "The Thrills" or what?

Posted - 10/21/2004 : 10:12:41 i can't believe this thrills bashing thread is still going..
my stance is that they are "alright". they were interesting when i first heard them, and they got old pretty fast for me. but i don't think they suck.
for opening acts, you can do much worse than them.
like, for instance, Alien Crime Syndicate in Spokane, WA.
they sucked

Posted - 10/21/2004 : 09:19:33 I have a hard time with singers who don't do anything more than lean on their mic stand. They really had too many people in the band to acheive their "sound". Turns out I was familiar with 2 of their songs - meh

Sorry to be picky, but the Thrills are from Ireland, not the UK. Irish people get a bit offended with that kind of mix up - even when the band are shit!
You're right ... and I have friends from Dublin who would thrash me for a slip like that! |

Posted - 10/19/2004 : 10:16:21 The thrills lost me when in the second night in Atlanta they did the exact same 'faux-spontaneous' rock-show stage shtick -- the hitting the cymbol with the mike, the rolling countdown by the lead singer to the 'big finish' in the final song or so.....
Blah.
At least joey doing his drumstick thing was original AT ONE POINT! He's merely covering himself.

Posted - 10/17/2004 : 09:32:35 I wonder how many of the haters here have heard the new disc. I have never heard the first disc, and only heard the new one after I saw them open the other night in Atlanta. I think it's pretty good, and they were good live as well.
Give the new album a shot. I like Pet Sounds, but I don't detect that they are trying to be like the Beach Boys or anything. Maybe that was just the first album.

Posted - 10/16/2004 : 11:30:12 We had to sit through them twice in Boca and Orlando ... terribly boring, boring band ... and Santa Cruz is a horrible song ... yuk! And I usually like new bands like that, especially from the UK. I never once thought of the Beach Boys, but I did think the singer reminded me of the illegitimate offspring of Rod Stewart and Feargal Sharkey. And for God's sake, get a coat that actually fits! It looked like he needed a courdoroy jacket to complete his retro 70's look so badly that it just didn't matter if it was two sizes too small.
They definitely did not live up to their name. |

Posted - 10/15/2004 : 20:45:09 They go over a lot better playing in a hole in the wall record store to an intoxicated crowd (or at least an intoxicated me) than they do to an apathetic crowd anxious to see the Pixies. |

Posted - 10/14/2004 : 21:01:18 Not that it matters. . .But chalk me up as another who likes The Thrills. I thought they were one of the best opening acts I have seen in a long time. Usually I just sit in pain for most openers. I enjoyed the hell out of the Rosebud song, and most others as well. |

Posted - 10/11/2004 : 19:49:26 My brother-in-law almost got in a fight with a couple of guys at a Pixies/U2 show on their final tour. They were talking smack about the pixies, and he turned around and said,
"You know, I came here to see this band. I don't really want to see U2, so therefore I don't care if I get thrown out for beating your ass."
Fun times.

Posted - 10/10/2004 : 09:51:25 Saw them last night. They pissed everyone off right from the get-go by having all sorts of stupid equipment problems and delaying the start of the show by about 40 minutes. So they had no friends left in the crowd when they finally did play. The lead singer had the most ridiculous dance moves I've ever seen. It was like Jagger and the dude from The Hives had a baby. After every damn song he'd say "Thank you very much!" which I guess made the audience think it was their last song. Lots of boos. Very bland, not impressed. |

Posted - 10/09/2004 : 08:06:42 Got to the Tampa show early last night to secure a good spot, and I must say, I didn't think the Thrills were that bad, to judge from the entire set I heard. It's typical that opening bands are readily dismissed---even abused---and some are more deserving of this treatment than others. I didn't think the Thrills were conspicuously bad at all. In fact, they were a decent opening act with a few good tunes. I haven't heard the records, but the show they put on doesn't even rank close to the worst I've ever seen, especially as opening acts go.
So, here's one person saying the comments so far seem a little harsh. |

Posted - 09/27/2004 : 16:35:29 I thought they came off humble rather than snobby. But they do listen to too many early Neil Young records. (That's an opinion from someone who likes Neil Young.) |

I quite like the Zutons, I bought their first CD. They sound like a succesful mix of some White Stripes songs and The Coral.

Posted - 09/22/2004 : 17:14:13 So, until last night, I really had no idea who the Thrills were, either, until they played what I take to be their "hit". And I realise this is that annoying song I'm always hearing in the grocery store. Bland and inoffensive. They got a fairly mild response and had a few dedicated hecklers.
But jesus, they sound NOTHING like any era of the Beach Boys. Okay, they might sound like "Keepin' the Summer Alive", for all I know, since I haven't listened to that one... |

Posted - 09/22/2004 : 14:49:11 One word of advice for anone who guys to a show where the thrills are supporting: If the singer takes out a harmonica, block your ears, or if your cloe enough, try to bludgoen him to death (in fact, attempt to do so regardless of the presence of a harmonica)
I had to endure them before the pixies in the phoenix park. the only thing that kept me in any way interested was that halfway through their set (of songs that all sound the same) the bassist started playin guitar and the guitarist started playin bass. Or maybe the guitarist started playin guitar and the bassist started playin bass, i dunno. |

The Pogues Announce UK Reunion Tour by Chi Tung | 07.22.2004
Irish rockers the Pogues, led by turbulent frontman Shane MacGowan, will attempt a brief UK reunion tour, beginning in December. The performances — set to kick-off at Glasgow’s Academy on December 13 — will be the group’s first since 2001.
Meanwhile, MacGowan continues to be mired in controversy, as numerous fans have started a petition on the lead singer’s website, with hopes of axing current manager Joey Cashman, as well as the boycotting of these later shows. MacGowan’s father Maurice is among these supporters.
Reunion dates:
Dec. 13-14: Glasgow (Academy) Dec. 16: Newcastle (Arena) Dec. 17: Birmingham (Academy) Dec. 18: Manchester (M.E.N. Arena) Dec. 20-21: London (Brixton Academy) Dec. 23: Dublin (Point)
Whats up with this boycott bullshit?
Wish I was over there. I'd be at one of (or a few) those shows for sure.
