Posted - 09/07/2004 : 00:41:06 YEAH! so I just got back from the Pixies show closing Bumbershoot, What an amazing show! They were very tight and the vocal and musical integrity of all the memebers was totally up to par and maybe beyond what they may have been before. I think maybe back in the day, pre-breakup, they were still much more experimental and all about pushing musical and performance boundaries as well as just having plain old fun. They rocked the shit out of that Memorial Stadium at Seattle Center tonight. They played all the great Pixies songs you know and love(if you're a fan) Caribou, Bone Machine, Wave of Mutilation(They played both the UK Surf Edition as well as the album version) Tame, Debaser, Monkey Gone to Heaven, Planet of Sound, Velouria, Something Against You, Broken Face, Number 13 Baby, Gigantic, Vamos, Isla De Encanta, Ed Is Dead, Nimrod's Son, Hey, Crackity Jones, Dead, Winterlong, In Heaven..., U-Mass, Cactus, I Bleed, and I think that't it but I cant remember EVERY single one. Anyway they were so great. This was a really special moment for me since I have been a fan since I was 15 years old and never got to see them live as they were on the outs with each other by then and broke up shortly thereafter, so I have been waiting 11 years to see them and what a show to make my memory. I got to share it with my best friend Jenna, who I introduced the world of the Pixies to and she has fallen just as I did those first few songs I heard way back in 1993, and also with Julie. Anyway, they rocked and sound the best of any reunited band ever, and they don't even look OLD! they just look older (you know the difference I am saying right?) I am now off to bed to have sweet dreams of the great show!

Posted - 09/07/2004 : 04:36:29 Did anyone get to see Joey at Easy Street Records in Queen Anne Sunday? He was there from 2 to about 3:15. It was not announced, and as of two days before was not even on their marque where they always advertise the in-stores. My husband was going to Bumbershoot that day and passed by the store at about 3:00. It was on the marque then that Joey was to be there at 2 pm. He peeked in and saw that Joey was still there signing cds! He called me freaking out at his luck. I was still at home and super jealous!! He got to go in and get an autograph. He told Joey how we'd seen some of the warm up shows. When he mentioned we'd been at Vancouver, Joey said Vancouver was one of his favorite shows from the warm up (perhaps forgetting they played two shows).
We assume Joey played a set, but my husband was there to late to see it :-( Did anyone catch it?

Posted - 09/07/2004 : 04:09:43 Yeah, the set list was "same old, same old," but even with this being the sixth time I've seen them this year, it STILL kicks ass!!!!
It was a great show!! At first I was a little put off with the larger crowd, as opposed to my experience with the smaller, all hardcore fans crowd on the warm up tour shows I saw. It was hard for me to adjust to not everyone being super excited by every song. In fact, it really seemed like from where I was standing people only knew a few songs (you know the ones). But then I just put that aside, had a great time and enjoyed the show much more than I thought I was going to.
They sounded much tighter than in the Spring! And I thought they sounded great then. Wow!! Velouria in particular sounded incredible. Not sure why. I had to stop watching a few times during the show and just listen to how *beautiful* they sounded, FB's screams and all. Really great! And the stadium they played is notorious for bad sound.
One of the biggest highlights for me was Planet of Sound. Some how I never saw a show where they played it on the warm up tour. I apologize to all those around me for the screaming, jumping around and general freak out I had when they played it. However, I do not apologize to all the people who decided that was the moment to leave and got in my way of enjoying one of my favorite Pixies songs as they walked, very slowly in front of me. They deserved to be yelled at to "MOVE! MOVE!" and be pushed on past me. Err!
The only song missing from LikeJellyrollSculpture's list of songs played that I can think of was Holiday Song. They played that, right LikeJellyrollSculpture? My brain is dying on me right now. Pretty sure they played it.
They started with Caribou. I can't remember what song they ended the regular set with, but they just huddled together over to the side of the stage, instead of going off for an encore. They came back with the album version of Wave of Mutilation, and that was it for an encore.
In all, I enjoyed it every bit as much as the warm up shows, and as I said before, I was not expecting that. It was a different experience to be sure, but just as great!! I had the same glowing feeling, hoarse voice and huge smile on my face after the show as I had after all the warm up shows!! |
