Posted - 06/08/2004 : 16:32:05 Does anyone know if the shipped cd quality is superior to the Netburn ? Netburn is a great concept but the overall sound quality seems "muted", like MP3's. I hope the Cd's will be full uncompressed audio.

Posted - 06/11/2004 : 02:53:49 PS - the NetBurn option is really freakin awsome. I downloaded and burned it at work and listened to it on the way home. That is unfathomably cool to me. Someday we will take this all for granted, but as a producer/engineer it blows my mind that you can do this at all. |

Posted - 06/11/2004 : 02:51:39 I ordered the 6/4 Brixton show, and even the mp3 version is definitely the best sounding yet of the disclive's I've heard so far (6 of the warmup tour discs). I'm fine with a quick download version knowing that the real thing is coming in a few weeks.
128K is really just fine for listening in the car or on headphones. It would be cool to have a choice I guess, but it's so fanastic to even get these shows to listen to, legitimately, for so cheap, and so quickly, that to complain about anything seems almost petty.
Thank you DiscLive - I'm really enjoying your work!

Posted - 06/10/2004 : 17:21:10 Aye..i think more options sounds like a good idea. Perhaps a 128kb version and a 256kb version, and let people choose..some people on dial-up might be happy with the smaller version, and others on cable would benefit from either option..
Just an idea. I concur that this is a great service!

Posted - 06/10/2004 : 10:32:39 I must agree. Up the bitrate!!! As such, it only took me 5-10 min to download. I wouldn't mind waiting an hour if the quality warrants it. I personnaly hate MP3 "quality", it does something to the music that a copy of a copy of a tape doesn't. Something to do with dynamic ranges. So a bigger download for me every day, if that's the price, I'm ok.

Note that NetBurn will support a variety of bit rates, and based on the feedback I'll get with Jake and see if upping the rate next time around will be an option. :)
Also, obviously when we increase the bitrate, the download size goes up. I'd love your feedback as to whether you'd like larger downloads in exchange for the increased bit rate.
Thanks so much! This is a great forum.

Posted - 06/09/2004 : 16:01:37 Thanks for all the replies. I loved the possibility of downloading the shows only hours after, but we're talking Pixies here. MP3 is great to preview a song or an album, but there IS a noticeable loss in quality. The friday show in Brixton was my fave (undressing in the sun), can't wait to hear it full quality blasting through my neighborhood, and, who knows, maybe yours...
I know this isn't the place, but me desperately seeking tickets for the Zenith on june 14, I live in Brussels and it's the only chance i get to see them in a reasonably sized venue. I'm going to Werchter festival, but i fear it won't be the same, I'm used to seeing Frank or the Breeders in small venues, which is fine by me. So if anyone out there feels the urge to do a good deed, think of me please...

Posted - 06/09/2004 : 13:56:41 I used to think that too, but listen to a song like Seven Nation Army on CD (or even 256 k MP3) vs 128k. Or The Dears' Lost In The Plot. Or...
There is noticable difference in songs with a lot of dynamics like these.

Posted - 06/09/2004 : 13:30:04 I must be a philistine but for the majority of music that I listen to if really don't find alot of difference between MP3 and wav. With 128kbps variable bitrate and aac encoding its about as good as lossy compression is going to get.
If I ever invest in £6000 worth of stereo equipment, and my own home theatre I might one day care, until then I think I'll take my gritty old mp3s stuff em on my iPod and concentrate on enjoying the music, rather than worrying about the fidelity my eardrums have long since lost the sensitivity to pick up anway.
Am I the only one who thinks that the best sound they ever heard was from a mates tape of a tape of a taped copy of doolittle?

Posted - 06/09/2004 : 11:07:02 My Netbrun files just downloaded as m4a files for use in iTunes. No auto burn or burning over the net. I had to burn them myself. But yeah, it says right on the download page that they are 128kbps mp3s.

Posted - 06/09/2004 : 10:00:59 NetBurns are basically 128k MP3's wrapped in an app that burns to disc. The CD's we produce for Brixton will not only feature the full high fidelity audio recording, but will also be pressed CDs, not CD-Rs ... resulting in the highest quality and best sounding DiscLive CD's yet.

Posted - 06/09/2004 : 08:58:26 People at Sharing the groove analyzed this and it seems the Netburn files are mp3 at 128k...So there not that great a file. They are probably good for a complement to someone who purchases the cds itself, as a temporary solution (just like Pearl jam does it)...But it seems the numbers that disclive is getting verifies trying to sell these things is hard to do, compared to the WAV cd copies.
The good news is disclive is willing to try all kinds of things, maybe this experiment will fall by the wayside (trying to sell mp3s for $18)..Now again if they did what metallica/primus did and sell flac or shn files to burn, they might have better success.
I am willing to go through whatever experiments they want to take us on, as long as they keep offering wav cds..its worth $25 to be able to leave the DAT at home!

Posted - 06/09/2004 : 08:17:22 I imagine that since Eric will have a lot more time with the mix/mastering for the DiscLive CDs, they will sound better than all the others combined.

Posted - 06/09/2004 : 02:01:58 I think the netburns are probably mp3s wrapped in an applet that burns them to disc - after all they are sub 100mb and I dont know many other codecs that would support that kind of compression - certainly not a lossless one
