WTF? Did you really believe this? Coming out of the Brixton tube on the way to Friday or Saturday's gig I heard someone else saying something about it being cancelled, causing about 5 seconds of panic until I realised it was BS.
For me, who went to all four nights, Friday was the gig where everything just clicked. What a show.
Really want to buy the DiscLive of this show, but after the amount I've just spent on the Pixies (2 tix for each night, plane to london and back, tube, food, official £18 shirt, bootleg £10 shirt) I'm finding it hard to submit to the urge.
Anyone fancy putting the shitty MP3's of Friday up for grabs?

Posted - 06/07/2004 : 05:58:37 I was delighted that the band put on such a show. Still a little sore at having to chose between moshing like a madman, or hanging out with a crap view, in the company of trendy idiots who've just turned up spill their drinks over you and sing 'Gigantic'.

I'm with you on that one Begeegs - I saw a few people who clearly did'nt know a single song - But London is the only place I've ever been to concerts where I get the impression more than half the people their dont know the artist ('what does Time Out say I should be attending this week etc?'). Still it was definitely the best atmosphere I've experienced at a concert in London since I've lived here (7 yrs).
Of course one of the great things about the Pixies is their fanbase has *never* been trendy. One thing I noticed each night was a wide variety of different looks in the crowd.

Posted - 06/07/2004 : 05:06:30 Yeah - that is what she said - 'Dave's mother says that we need to talk a bit more. Say things like 'this is the best gig we have ever done, the best audience..etc.etc.'
I couldn't have asked for a better gig (after I moved from the front that is). I got sucked into the pit for the 1st 5 tunes and I have to admit, it completely takes away from going to a concert as you are concentrating on keeping your balance rather than watching a gig...

I thought she said something like "David Lovering's mother said the we should say something about the city that we are playing in....." "This is the best city blah blah best venue blah blah"
I could be totally wrong as I haven't had a chance to listen to the disclive recordings yet. I don't know if it's even on there, but that was my take on what she said.

Posted - 06/06/2004 : 14:54:43 hey malax, i had a second after a few songs where it clicked theyd said jack shit. waiting for just a "thanks" from frank or anyone. but as the night drew on, little things just made my night. seeing frank slowly walk up to kim, thought he was gonna plant a smacker on her lips or cheek. seeing joey jumpin and the vamos solo. my hand were in the air for the whole feedback fest in worship. genius. i was just blown away with something against you. how the hell they all keep in time i'll never know. break neck speed!
i was a bit down at the beginning watching frank strum bone machine. as a guitar player i cant help notice these things. just couldnt stop thinking is frank bored playing these songs he'd left behind. obviously playing the same chords but not as energetic back in the day or on the dvd. but all my doubts soon disappeared. awesome. and they looked happy too. could have cheered them for ever when they took there bow.

Posted - 06/06/2004 : 12:48:43 I enjoyed it. Although I really wish there had been more talking. At first it seemed to me that they were there simply to do a job. Bada bing bada boom sort of thing, but as it rolled on I didn't care. Having not listened to them for a while it was just quite amazing to hear the songs, it made me realise that no matter how bad the sound quality was or the performance the songs would have made the journey south worth it. Where the hell were they selling the live CD thingys?

I think it depends a lot where you were standing, the sound on the download is excellent.
I thought the vocals sounded a bit mushy where I was stood last night (near the front to the right). On the Wednesday night I down on the 2nd / 3rd row in front of Kim with my kids, and the sound was better but you could hardly concentrate on it because of the crush of people around.
I think these disclive recordings are great because you can let your hair down at the gig and then still enjoy the music later on your stereo or headset |

Posted - 06/05/2004 : 07:10:13 Did I go to a different gig? Last night was a horrible experience for me.
Took my younger sister, against my better judgement. We stupidly stood near the front, both being rather small we couldn't see well. And once the opening song began ('Bone Machine'), the crowd started pogoing and pushing like mad. Pretty violent. No one gave each other an inch. Drunks were shoving their way around, singing loudly, usually a different song to what was being played. My sis was in tears, having been elbowed and stomped on. Tried to move back, and if it wasn't for ONE SINGLE GUY who stopped what he was doing and showed some concern, I couldn't have got her out of there. I would like to thank that man immensely.

Posted - 06/05/2004 : 06:11:59 Last night was breathtaking. Could barely walk by the end of the night, completley drained! Did anybody see Kim trying desperatley to hold back the tears at the end of the first encore?! They were worshipped by the crowd last night too. Literally! |
Sprite |
Posted - 06/05/2004 : 05:35:59 That second encore was the best thing I have ever seen. Gouge away framed in the red lights and dry ice. It seemed the place erupted when this was followed by Debaser - everyone was going ballistic it seemed the whole floor was moving. I was thinking just towards the end would'nt it be perfect if they played Tame next. Could'nt believe it when they did.
And there was still room for Planet of sound!
I cant get across in words how impressive they are, only to say that those who are going to the upcoming shows will not be dissapointed - they have been f**ing amazing these last two nights.

I was surprised when Kim said it was the best gig they had done but the comments by Eric Welsh the Disclive engineer also point to it being a special performance. Luckily I bought this one so I will be able to check it out on the live cds.
I think what we're all witnessing right now, either in person or through these CDs, is quite exceptional. Has another band ever just sloughed off 11 years rust and returned to the peak of their abilities like this before? It's educational, to quote some guy.
And Eric Welsh is right, the Brixton recordings are special. Even just the netburns of the first two nights sound as good or better than any of the live stuff on "Death to the Pixies," for instance, and the performances are utterly superior in terms of emotional depth and nuance. These are not musicians going through the motions, despite the "we're only in it for the money" quotes.
Unbelievable. I can't stop listening to these things. |

Posted - 06/05/2004 : 02:41:34 I was more impressed with Wednesday's show, but I think that has more to do with the fact that it was the first time I had seen the them.

One of the guys I went with managed to get me a pass to the after gig bar. Frank was up there looking well pleased with himself thanking various people.
I am going again tonight, almost certain to be another special one.

Posted - 06/05/2004 : 02:08:51 Absolutely fantastic, peeling them off the walls; a lot better than Wednesday. The band were obviously having a blast too; notice the Joey/Frank synchorised jumps on "Into The White"? Joey seemed to decide he fancied bouncing on the spot, and convinced Frank to do likewise.... cue Joey going a long way into the air, and at the last minute, discretion getting the better of Mr Black, who kind of shrugged upwards without his feet ever leaving the ground! |

Posted - 06/04/2004 : 22:27:58 Greetings all Pixies fans,
This is Eric Welsh, the Head Engineer for Disclive and I have just recently been turned onto this forum by Jake Walker, of Disclive, and I think that this is a great thing to have available for all of the fans. I felt I should post something here as I am a fan also and being a fan as well as an audio freak/producer, I know people must wonder how the whole process is done and how it is mixed. I wish other engineers/producers would get on the forums to share their wealth of knowledge.
First off, here is the set list for one of the best Pixies show I have witnessed on tour and check it out...they did not even have a "set list" going into the show, total freelance, they are really getting their game together! If the Pixies DVD comes out in the future, look out for me with a flashlight under my face writing down the setlist as they perform:
bone crack jones river wave (fast version) monkey bleed caribou cactus broken face something against you isla hey #13 dead u-mass gigantic velouria ed is dead
(disclive cd 2)
In heaven / where is my mind mr grieves here comes your man holiday vamos - into the white - gouge debaser tame - planet of sound
I would like to share with you all that these shows have been a great experience for me because since we are not doing instant "on site" distribution, I am able to mix the tracks after the concert, in a multitracked platform. I feel that these London shows will have a lot of clarity to the sound of the concert and also worth mentioning is that the Brixton Academy hall is a great venue. When I first arrived at the venue and met with Ray Furze (Pixies UK house engineer, who is one of the best in the world) we stood in the middle of the hall and he hit a single hand clap which echo'ed like of huge cavern for about 7 seconds. Lesson #1 for live recording is mic placement, don't put your ambient/crowd mic's near a 7 second delay... Another great thing was that I was able to take source feeds striaght from the stage and therefore bypassed venue and house board connections, giving me the best signal flow to capture the tracks for mixing. A lot of times this is not the case, especially for the on site "live mixing/mastering" product Disclive has offered, because a lot of times the artist will not tour with their own audio/sound reinforcement equipment. Dealing with venue staff becomes very complicated sometimes when you have a few hours to patch in your lines/mic's and get a mix happening before the soundcheck...and sometimes there isn't a soundcheck...anyone ever "mix of the fly, live to CD with no soundcheck?" A Canadian Pixies show was mixed with no soundcheck, just a line check...I did it...hopefully you all won't be able to tell or "hear" which one it was . The fall Pixies tour will be something special based on these principals as we have done it already with them and will do it even better.
Sorry to read about people not receiving orders promptly. Even though it is not my department, I can assure you that they are doing everything they can in the office and have corrected many shipping issues. I'll check back into this forum whenever I can. Check out my "Boston" based band at www.tonsofchill.com if you would like. Hope to see some of you this fall.
