Unfortunately, with so much other stuff going on these days, even just making it to the concert is pushing it. So no, I won't be able to make it. Thanks for the invitation and all of the effort you've put into this, though.
The Champ Posted - 11/27/2004 : 08:22:39
So do tell, how was the Show last night?/?, anyone???
jvince Posted - 11/26/2004 : 15:13:16
Hey Champ, if Kathryn is just going to follow me and my group, why don't you set where we should go for pre-show? I think we sort of settled on the Piano Bar on Elgin, but do know of anything better or closer to the venue? If we all meet up around 3 or 4 and then move towards the venue at around 5:30 to be there for 6, we be able to get some food and drinks in.

Yeah, those damned punk underagers that decide to come to the show high are welcome to do so, but I'm going to be front stage while their coming down in the most pit.
jvince Posted - 11/26/2004 : 15:10:03
Hell no! When I hear about the Pixies were reforming I made damn sure I had tickets. I've been lucky enough to see them in the 'Peg, Vancouver, Toronto, Hull now, and soon enough New York. Hey Jefery With One F, are you gonna come to pre/post show?
Jefery With One F Posted - 11/26/2004 : 07:50:20
I still can't believe I'm seeing them again. The first time still hasn't set in yet, and that was back in April. Of course, I think term papers are responsible this time. I bought the tickets as soon as they were available and only picked them up yesterday.

Anyhow, let's all hope they play Head On. My wife loves the Pixies but didn't think a second concert would be as special as the first (it could be said that 6 months of anticipation is nothing compared to 8 years, but there was no way I was going to miss this). I convinced her that they were separate tours and that there was a good chance she'd get to hear Head On (her favourite) this time around. If not, I might have some explaining to do.

And hopefully the reality will hit me soon. Last time, it came all at once when they walked on the stage and I heard the first few chords of Debaser. Within seconds, I was almost in tears.

Are any of you seeing them for the first time in Hull?
kathryn Posted - 11/26/2004 : 06:39:37
I'm taking off today (for Montreal shows), won't be online till after Ottawa. So I'll just call JVince and he can clue me in. Thanks, you guys. It's gonna be so rocking. I can't wait. And I hope to meet a buch of youz.

The Champ Posted - 11/26/2004 : 05:43:19
so are we still doing a pre show thing or do u think there is time to do so, cause we want great spots too.
jvince Posted - 11/25/2004 : 17:39:05
Fuck moving to the BOB at 6. I'm going to be damn sure I'm grabbing the barricade in front of the stage. Hell, I'm getting there at 5 and waiting a few hours just to see the show up close. Toronto was bloody amazing, but way too many cracked-out teenagers kept fucking up my scenario. This time I'll get to the front barrier and hold on for dear life. By the by, the band really gave'r last night in Toronto. I had one bad day right up until the Pixies took stage and then everything finally took to the recesses of my worried mind and I rocked out to the Pixies for a good, long set.

Hi. Just registered to welcome out-of-towners to Ottawa and throw in my two cents.

Good call on avoiding Barrymore's. I've been twice, and it's great if you can get in. You have to line-up well before 9 or 10 if you want to get in before 1.

Zaphod's is great. Punk Rock Aerobics just ended last week, and the regular retro night went with it. Now it's called High Voltage. I'm unsure exactly what kind of music they play there, but I did pop in for half-an-hour this past Sunday and the DJ said "I want to see everyone back here next Sunday, unless of course you're going to the Pixies show, in which case have a good time and see you afterwards." So at least he's aware of the show and has an appreciation of the band. The music he played while I was there was mostly heavy metal (AC DC, Guns N' Roses, etc.) ending the night with some ska. That shouldn't be taken as an indication of what he plays normally or throughout the night, that's just what I know from my limited experience.

An alternative if that doesn't work out is Mod Club at the nearby Mercury Lounge. That's where I go every Sunday, including this upcoming night. It's about a three minute walk away down the Market. They aren't likely to play any Pixies, but otherwise the music is great, with two DJs who regularly work Zaphod's. However, there is a cover, so Zaphod's is still probably your best bet. Just thought I'd give you an alternative.

Hope everyone has a great time!
jvince Posted - 11/23/2004 : 18:26:37
Okay, I e-mailed Zaphod's with an approximation of how many might come. Show-up will greatly influence how much Pixies/Breeders/FB they play that night.

Sunday afternoon pre-show: Question is do we meet in Hull or at piano bar on Elgin. I'm thinking we meet and drink and eat from 3 until 6 and then move to the BOB arena. The piano bar is on Elgin near the NAC. It's called Friday's Roast House, I think err, and has a vertical orange sign on the outside of the building that reads "Piano Bar".

Let me know what the majority wants to do.

Only five days left, curse these final hours for not ending sooner.

Kathryn, downtown Ottawa is pretty cool if you're in the right place at the right time. Zaphod's is apparently internationally renowned (??!??!). Well, for pre-show I'm taking a wild stab here and deciding on piano bar for me and my group. Everyone else is invited. I'll get its exact name and address on the forum later this week. I think we plan to meet there around 3pm and then move to the concert in Hull around 6pm. Kathryn, just e-mail and I'll reply with my cell phone number so you and your husband don't miss out on whatever is concretely decided on this board and in case you need directions.

I can only do pre-show, so please clue me in. And do it soon, as I'm taking off (for the Montreal shows) and won't be checking back here until after the shows.

I am coming from the States and staying at a hotel in downtown Ottawa. I can't wait!

No, don't worry about the guest list Icefly, there isn't a guest list anymore. Zaphod's is just going to discount drinks that night, simply to get business, and play some Pixies. Yeah, we ought to definitely decide on something pre-show, fast! Icefly, we need somewhere to sit and drink small amounts of alcohol (save the heavy drinking for post-party). The first two places you mentioned sound great, but if not I'm sticking to the piano bar near Elgin and Sparks in Ottawa, then driving to the venue.

By a count of hands, who is coming from out of town and is staying in Ottawa?
icefly Posted - 11/22/2004 : 14:12:17
Zaphod's should be good - you can count me in for me plus two at least (maybe more but will confirm) Do I need to send my real name etc. directly to you?

As for before the Quatre Jeudis in Hull is a pretty cool place. Let me just double check that they'll be open Sunday afternoon / evening.
But then there is also le Troquet which is a very cool cafe with local art etc and I am fairly positive will be open. They are across the street from each other less than a block from promenade du portage. Both are very cool. Or there is the Bop which is somewhat less cool but more spacious. All three are about a 15-20 minute walk to Robert Guertain or within hailing distance of a cab.

Anything pre-show?

jvince Posted - 11/18/2004 : 17:37:33
Yeah, now it looks like a fair sized crowd is generating over Zaphod's. Remember this is the last Canadian date on tour and therefore it will be the best.
jvince Posted - 11/18/2004 : 17:35:42
Pre-show gathering? Where? Champ, you know anything about Hull?

Yes, Zaphod's is a go. They'll play Pixies and 50 cents off pints and they're open until 2 or 3.
The Champ Posted - 11/18/2004 : 15:45:09
Im looking forward to meeting you guys

ONly ten days left:)
jvince Posted - 11/14/2004 : 15:07:06
Well, there really isn't much to Zaphod's (just pints are $4.50 instead of $5 and they'll play Pixies if they have it). I think Zaphod's might be the best for a post-show, and it's looking like most of the people I know who are going to the show are likely to follow to Zaphod's afterwards.
The Champ Posted - 11/14/2004 : 10:47:59
I actually wouldnt mind smooth jazz piano, but whatever works il do anything. So zaphod's is a go?
kathryn Posted - 11/13/2004 : 10:03:45
Anything but smooth jazz piano. Anything.

jvince Posted - 11/13/2004 : 09:24:34
Okay, got a hold of Zaphod's owner. Nothing particularly special, pints are reduced to $4.50 (from $5) and they'll play whatever Pixies & related artists the DJ has in catalogue. I've been talking to some people in Ottawa here, it might be a pretty big turnout.

Before show: a few options: Gap of Dunloe, drink at my apartment, piano bar on elgin (smooth jazz piano), or somewhere in Hull (I hear Hullians drink a lot on that side of the river). Whichever gets the most attention from compadres and this forum, I'm going to do.
kathryn Posted - 11/11/2004 : 18:46:42
Lemme know about beforehand, please!

jvince Posted - 11/11/2004 : 18:39:41
Oops, sorry Kathryn, it's afterwards. But I imagine we'll do something else beforehand as well, maybe closer to the venue though.
kathryn Posted - 11/11/2004 : 17:44:12
Is this an after-show or a pre-show thing?

I can only do something beforehand, so if it's before count me as:

Kathryn + 1

Yeah! It's weird. The only stuff I've every seen has been in the Xpress. It's bizarre though that the only way to get tickets was through Capitaltickets.ca. Stupid Corel Centre, doesn't know what to do with no NHL this year.

Now to the related material. I got a response from Zaphod's. They might be willing to work something out but I think they want a guest list developed and we sort of need to somehow guarantee a good turnout (25-50 people) as it is a slow Sunday night. Maybe we should all start putting in our usernames and the amount of guests we'll definitely be brining:

Kind of unrelated (okay, completely unrelated), but what was up with the complete lack of advertising for tonight's Beastie Boys concert? It seems strange to see more advertising for (and hear more people talking about) the Pixies. I had no idea they were going to be in Ottawa until yesterday evening.
jvince Posted - 11/10/2004 : 12:39:01
Post-party: still waiting on some replies from local establishments to see if they'll cut us a corporate/party rate if we provide a guest list of guaranteed participants. If not I'm randomnly finding a bar to drink in after the show.(Either Zaphod's, Gap of Dunloe, MacLaren's, etc.) Any really good suggestions?

Pre-party: Dunno anymore. No limo, that's for sure. Figure we'll meet up somewhere in Hull? Anyone have any good ideas of what's in Hull and close to the venue for food and drink?

Only 18 more days. I can't wait!
kathryn Posted - 11/10/2004 : 09:50:22
Yeah, what is the pre-show plan looking like? As I keep saying, I'm up for anything but can't suggest a thing, as this will be my second time to Ottawa. Thanks!

Jefery With One F Posted - 11/09/2004 : 20:36:46
Was there ever any decision about a few drinks before or after the show? I can't guarantee that I can make it because my wife has to work the following morning, but if the Victoria show in April was any indication, it might take a while to wind down after the show.
