I can't figure out how to muddle through all the transportation information on the Los Angeles Int'l Airport site, and I don't really want to carpool. What are all you people doing? Is there a shuttle straight to Coachella? Buses? Vans? How the hell do I get there?

Really? Do you remember what companies? I'm 20, but the lowest age I can find is 21. I thought I had heard of paying an extra fee for underage, but everyone's saying no.

yes, you need to take a bus to get to the subway ...

i'm pretty sure the Amtrack goes nowhere near Indio ... it's car or bus (or you could fly into Palm Springs but that's about $100 RT under the perfect conditions (advance booking etc ...)

rent a car, i've been renting cars since i was 18 or 19, they just charge you more per day

I think the green line follows the 105 from near the airport. It goes to a station where you can transfer to the blue line, which goes to downtown LA (7th Street & Figueroa), where you switch to the red line which goes a couple stops to Union Station.

What a conundrum.

oh yes, you'll have to get from LAX to wherever the bus/train terminal is. There is a green line light rail that MTA runs. It goes to the airport, but I don't know if it comes from downtown. That's where the train station is, The bus station, I think, is near USC. Yeah, I don't envy you. Try to see if there is a tour bus company that runs buses from LAX to Indio. That's the problem- no one assumes that people will be leaving LAX by anything other than a car. Here's something- call 1-800-4mytaxi. Find out how much a cab ride is from LAX to downtown. It might not be that much. Too bad you are too young to rent a car.

I got cheap plane tickets online, so I had to take what I can get and can't change it. I'm coming from North Carolina, so...

I'll try and see if I can find a rental car company or find an Amtrak that goes from LA to Indio. Thanks for the help.

I think you can take a bus or light rail from LAX to Union Station (downtown LA). Amtrak might go to Indio from there, I don't know. But that method will probably take a whole day to get there. Try the mta.net web site and Amtrak.

Donkeykong is right, though-- Ontario is a fairly big airport and MUCH closer to Indio.

Or take Amtrak from where you are now and avoid flying altogether.

shop around not all rental car places require you to be 25

if you can change your flights look into flying into Ontario or Palm Springs instead of Los Angeles both are much closer to the Coachella site

You have to be 25 to rent a car. I'm not, and neither is my girlfriend. So there's literally no buses?

Oh well. Last resort, kindness of strangers, I guess.

unfortunately LA has no real public transportation. and like BLT said, it's way outside LA. about 2 1/2 hours. renting a car is probably your best bet, but you could probably find a ride on the Coachella message boards, if you're willing to risk riding with a bunch of disgrunled Wilco fans.

Might I suggest Dollar Car Rental. They are very reasonable, and professional as well. There are a ton of small car rental places in L.A., but you might get burned- I found out the hard way to stick with a big-name car rental place.

Indio is about 150 miles from LAX. Unless somebody's going to give you a lift, renting a car is probably your best bet. Good luck!
